CliffyB will executive produce Gears of War film
Gears of War creator CliffyB will serve as an executive producer to the film adaptation, according to Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games. Speaking to Game Invasion at Midway's Gamer Day, Rein also explained that it was Jay Wilbur, the other Epic Game VP, who worked with Creative Artists Agency to negotiate the deal.Having the creator of the franchise in such a prominent position is sure to satiate purists to the game, but so far we have seen only minimal plot that could not be stretched to a feature length. And CliffyB's production role may not give him too much influence, for better or worse -- after serving as executive producer for the latest film adaptation of his work, Frank Miller has decided to serve as director on his roles from now on.
No director has been announced, but the treatment was done by Stuart Beattie, scribe of Collateral, which bodes well. New Line won the rights to create the film, but we're still hesitant to call it will still come to fruition or fall through the cracks like Halo did.
[Thanks, Frank]

"will executive producer Gears of War film"
Perhaps you mean "will executive produce" or "will be executive producer for."
Les Doodis @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:24PM
If this is being pushed forward I'm still not sure why the Halo movie isn't being picked up by another studio.
Shagittarius @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:31PM
I predict there will be a spunky female marine who has enough moxie to go head to head with the other marines who trash talk about chicks and tease her that shes really a lesbian. Oh and she will lose her armor towards the end and have to work the UV light gun on the back of a jeep and eventually be torn apart by the bat creature things. But she won't die until shes earned the respect of all the other marines yet again.

I have never been more sick of anyone in my life
FrankTheCrank @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:43PM
Will the movie be as short as the game?
Vegan @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:51PM
Isn't this largely an honorary credit, in cases like this involving licensed IP?
REUYL @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:54PM
@ Jody:
We talking about CliffyB or Summercamp?
Striderhayasa @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:02PM
Means almost nothing. Wasn't Todd McFarlane Executive Producer on the Spawn film? I can't remember. Either way, how'd that turn out?
The thought of a Gears of War film makes me want to hurl. Can we just get some original content for a change instead of these constant game/comic book adaptions and shoehorned films?
JodyAnthony @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:04PM
both.
Rubang B @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:06PM
Oh crap, Shagittarius wrote every movie ever!
This does sound really dumb. ZOMG aliens, shoot guns towards their bodies! Find their weakness and exploit it to win then show credits!
Who cares if the game sold well? It had no plot. What's next? TETRIS: THE MOVIE. Nevermind, I'd pay to see that.
Killer @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:08PM
Yes, Frank, it will, but 8 hours is pushing it don't you think? It would make it the longest movie ever made. It will also have great special effects, like the game.
DWells55 @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:11PM
Yeah, you're welcome for being your spell checker ;P
Killer @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:17PM
Rubang B, Well maybe we should do RFoM the movie. Wait, it will be exactly like every other Alien invasion movie. You don't own a 360 do you? or gears? either that or you never even read anything about gears. You CAN'T be an Alien race if you are from the same damn planet. Nice try though. I do agree though, why a movie, seriously?
By the way: I could see Tetris: The Movie, since you know EA likes money.
Who knows, maybe the movie will be of marcus during the Emergence day. The part where he is sent to prison (for helping his father) and that's where it ends. That would make sense for a movie. It won't be a boom boom they all die, they win. That would destory the Game.
JodyAnthony @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:22PM
unless they get john "bender" dimaggio to be in the movie, it will be useless
Triforceowner @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:05PM
Good to see the movie is going somewhere. Also good to see CliffyB is on board, but what can he offer other than staying true to the style of the game? I mean he is more of a gameplay designer than a plot.
colin @ Mar 22nd 2007 9:02PM
Gears of War is BADASS!
All merits aside, this guy looks like a complete tool. on par with Vanilla Ice. Suck in those cheeks, you sexy jackrabbit. I would hate to meet this guy. He seems really full of himself, and all his mug shots are tilted as if to say "You wanna step to this ... huh ?!?" I heard he refers to himself in the third person. What sucks even more is that he probably can't use his fame to get laid.
Check out Cliffy B on the next episode of Law and Order: SVU

Jake @ Mar 22nd 2007 8:55PM
I don't get it. A bunch of regular Nintendo fanboys/fangirls have loaded this thread with their posts that the movie already sucks because it has aliens in it, even though the Locusts technically aren't aliens. That is so weird. As long as it doesn't suck as bad as the Mario movie. ;)
btw, I think the movie will probably suck, but I love the game and will pay to watch it as long as it has good effects and stays true to the game as far as presentation goes.
Lansing @ Mar 23rd 2007 12:04AM
Gears of War had a bad plot, I can't see him adding anything to a movie.
If you think about it you will agree with me. We are talking about a race of locust who come out of the ground with guns a blazing and while never having been seen before on the planet. So these locusts must have made these guns themselves down underground which means they had to get materials, had to set up factories, ect.. A civilization as advanced as the locusts can not possibly go undetected by another advanced civilization. In summation, stupid plot-most likely stupid movie.
Great gameplay though, props for that. Make more games, not movies.

lol @ colin. That was amazing. It also reminded me of J.P. in Grandma's Boy.

he reminds me of derek zoolander
Killer @ Mar 22nd 2007 9:56PM
Well Colin careful not to buy Unreal Tournament 3, It was also made by an egotistic, tool. >;>
I also love how you judge a person from a picture. Very classy.
You heard he does? Well anything with the words "heard" usually is a rumor. Meet him, then judge.
Pimliconite @ Mar 22nd 2007 10:04PM
Well I think he's friggin hot. You guys are just jealous.
Colin @ Mar 22nd 2007 10:10PM
@Killer, lighten up, it's all in good fun. I actually just made that up about the third person thing. I'm sure he's a nice guy. It's just that his head is cocked in all the pictures i've seen. He also always looks like he spent all night blowing lines of powder off a stripper's inner labia, to wake up 45 minutes later and put on a tie-died shirt that smells like cumin powder, swisher sweets, and pabst blue ribbon and head to a press conference. More power to him! If I spent a long haul working on an amazing and amazingly successful videogame, I would probably do the same thing.
Rubang B @ Mar 22nd 2007 10:46PM
@Killer, hey hey hey, I think they're still aliens because they're not from Earth. I think it's safe to assume that the humans came from Earth back in the day, and have emigrated to Sera, and are fighting the aliens on the aliens' own home planet. (Just like in the movie Aliens.) I think RFoM or Metroid would make crappy movies too.
mocax @ Mar 22nd 2007 10:51PM
Are they going to finish the game series (Gears2, Gears3 etc) before doing the movie?
Or the movie is a interlude between part 1 and part 2?
Negativecool @ Mar 23rd 2007 12:10AM
Not that this has anything to do with anything, but I have to comment.
That pic of the Cliff is a bit odd looking. Look at his eyes...
His left eye(or YOUR left actually) is looking at the camera/you, while his right eye (again YOUR right) seems to be looking towards the lower left side of the pic...adrift. YET, both eyes appear perfectly in line, and both retinas appear bilaterally even--no lazy eye.
Strange.
colin @ Mar 23rd 2007 12:21AM
@ Negativecool
True, but cock your head like his, he's looking straight at you. Weird. His picture is alive. MWUHAHAHAHA!

Rubang B @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:39AM
Does "CliffyB" remind anybody else of how Bud Bundy on Married With Children would call himself Grandmaster B?
Paul Gale @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:17AM
I'm glad to learn that CliffyB will have some involvement with the Gears of War movie. It is his game after all, so hopefully his passion will transfer over and help guide the movie along in the right direction.
TomTheFamilyGuy @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:52AM
I think this movie should be 100% CG like the Final Fantasy movie. All the original voices, John Di Maggio, Carlos Ferro and all. I don't think live action can really pull off the kind of environment that the game creates... Plus, who in the hell is big enough to fill Marcus Fenix's shoes??? Certainly not Steven Segal...
fester @ Mar 23rd 2007 4:49AM
Cliffy is a good man, he's got real passion for the art of videogames so leave him alone. He can't help it if he doesn't look like the stereotypical computer nerd, i'm sure John Carmack doesn't have this BS thrust on him cos he happens to be a giant nerd.
TomTheFamilyGuy @ Mar 23rd 2007 6:11AM
Ok... Maybe Steven Segal...
Bryan Koylass @ Mar 23rd 2007 6:31AM
