Gran Turismo HD Euro update supports force feedback racing wheels
European PlayStation 3 owners now have something they can tout over their Japanese and North American brethren. Though they did wait months longer for the console's release, it seems that they are privileged to an updated version of Gran Turismo HD Concept, and version 2.0 sports force feedback support for racing wheels.
But force feedback is last-gen, you say? Vibrating controllers of Sony's past have won Emmys, we say. Racing fans who are dedicated to the genre enough to buy a wheel peripheral deserve to have as immersive an experience as possible, even if it's just one race course. This bodes well for future releases (as well as the unknown known Sixaxis with rumble). As of this writing, the U.S. version is still 1.1, but we expect to get our rumble shortly.

Rumble and Force Feedback are two entirely different technologies. They are not related in any way. Sony got a lot of nagative press beacuse everyone believed that force feedback = rumble. It was never the same thing.

I prefer any Mario Kart game and play it with my friends, and have some fun... and not a "focus-on-technology-game" that is boring...

to eaches own my friend. but nothing like ahve a tight wheel and feeling that force feedback as you drift thru a turn or slam into a wall.
or that feedback when u thri her in 5th and she lurches.
man i can't wait for forza 2.
Yeah...itsJoystiq...sowhat @ Mar 23rd 2007 6:37PM
Thanks Fernando...now think for a second...why would anyone here care about your Mario fetish? STFU or stay on topic.
AoE @ Mar 23rd 2007 6:50PM
Fernando,
Do you also talk about your love of mario platforming games in posts about first person shooters? I ask because, the comparison/market/etc. are about as disparate as the whole mario kart/gran turismo comparison. It's great that you like mario kart, no... really, it is. Now go play with your friends while the big kids discuss the racing sims. We'll hit you up if we want to talk about "kart" games.
Force Feedback is good news indeed... Is there a FF wheel on the market for the PS3? This might actually convince me to get a PS3... Otherwise, like m ike, I wait impatiently for Forza 2. Btw, m ike have you tried the wheel with Test Drive Unlimited yet? I actually think Eden's implementation of force feedback spanks PGR3...
djricekcn @ Mar 23rd 2007 6:51PM
FYI, I think Force Feedback and Rumble are two different things. Rumble is Rumble, but FF is fighting against you...hard to explain but I hope you get my point
KawF @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:23PM
Interesting... I heard somewhere on the internet... might have been 1up... that it was physically impossible for the PS3 to ever, EVER, support any sort of force feedback or rumble...
But then again. I think it was Luke Smith who uncovered that bit of "news". Shocking that this would happen, right?
Shagittarius @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:27PM
Impossible for the PS3 to support Rumble due to the lawsuit.
Impossible to support force feedback was never the case it was a case of mistaken identity, please see post #1.
Now that Sony has settled with the rumble people we will get rumble as well.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:46PM
The rumble from EBA definitely helps. With it I can feel each beat and it punishes me when I get it wrong. Plus sometimes it's funny to go on Breezing and keep missing them.
FrankTheCrank @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:59PM
This is cool.
There's no doubt that if developers wanted to update games with a new RUMBLE patch, it would be easy to do so.
Just add a add some code to facilitate for rumbles when poly's collide, done.
Korben @ Mar 24th 2007 12:01AM
That's funny, howcome my Drving Force Pro works (w/ Feedback) on my American PS3? That's not a new feature...

AssemblyLineHuman @ Mar 23rd 2007 10:31PM
jp: You mean like calling Xbox fanboys Xbots?
I hope Sony puts rumble in their controllers soon. I'm leaning toward a PS3 purchase this holiday season. =X
iLLwiLL @ Mar 23rd 2007 10:52PM
I'm with you there djricekcn. Cheers!
The technology that the PS2 and the Xbox brand use is the Rumble Feature. MS is the only company I've seen executing FF on their products, specifically their FF joystick line, which work quite well, but expensive.
Fernando, thanks for volunteering for the human punching bag position for this article. Perro. It's very unorthodox for you to throw down blasphemous game picks when they're neither here nor there within the context of this article, capisca?. So while you may have plenty of fun with a touch and go game, there is nothing like great game sims, you'll understand as you mature. The rumble feature only adds to the immersion. Sorry if I dragged this too long. Hasta la vista!

This article is so inaccurate! The Japanese version of GTHD from v1.0 has been compatible with "Force Feedback" for the wheels. I can't say anything for the US version because I have a Japanese PS3 but for a website like Joystiq to claim that the Japanese GTHD does not support Force Feedback is ridiculous. Do you guys even know the difference between Force Feedback and Rumble?!?
Capt. Castellanos @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:45PM
can people like both kart games and racing sims?
but on topic,
this sounds pretty groovy.
no ps3 though.
for now.
gregory mitchell @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:45PM
And sony said that they settled the lawsuit. Which means they paid up....but they also said that they have no plans for rumble in the sixaxis........(sarcasm)because remember rumble interferes with motion control (/sarcasm)
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:51PM
GT HD 1.1 already has this preference pane shown. It just doesn't actually work. The wheel works as input, but no feedback is given. I guess that's fixed now?
As to the other folks, PS3 already supported FF in wheels. Need for Speed does it. This idea that supporting on PS3 was impossible was erroneous.
Simply, SIXAXIS doesn't have rumble, and games were not programmed for rumble. This didn't affect wheels, as Logitech is an Immersion licensee.
This GT HD stuff is killing me. It's exactly what we heard earlier. They are going to mete out the game piecemeal. And like a crack dealer, the first one is gree. But it does appear we will be charged for cars and tracks.
Why can't they just finish up GT HD and sell it as a normal game? I guess I'll just have to play Forza 2 instead until this settles out.
James @ Mar 24th 2007 4:12AM
Korben,
Thats funny cause I have a Driving Force Pro and feedback is disabled and the screen shots they show of this version has two settings mine doesn't "Power Assist" and "Feedback Strength"
iLLwiLL,
Your an idiot. The PS2 had force feedback steering wheel support way back since GT3. It's the Xbox that lacked any form of force feedback wheels, which was retarded because Microsoft made FF wheels for the PC back then.
AoE,
This is the beauty of the PS3. Your not locked into a Xbox360 only wheel. You can use the past wheels bought for the PS2. Including wheels that support 900 degree rotation. Personally I'd take FF & 900 degree rotation over the FF & rumble that MS gives you with their proprietary wheel.
Biphster @ Mar 24th 2007 3:49PM
I'm just waiting for Logitech to announce the G25 Wheel for PS3 with GT5 endorsement ;) 900 Deg? Twin FF motors? Hydraulic brake? Clutch? 6 Speed Manual Shifter? Brushed alloy wheel with leather cover?... NICE.

Baldrick @ Apr 15th 2007 3:16AM
The G25 works fine with GT HD. You can change the button settings using the DFPro config screen.
As a PC sim racer (who has never really been into console racing games) I have to say GT HD really is very good. I may be converted!
