GRAW 2 to be seized by Mexican state gov't
Chihuahua Governor Jose Reyes Baeza Terraces has ordered the seizure of all copies of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 that are in regional distribution, according to a report in Juárez newspaper El Diario. The governor's order follows Juárez Mayor Héctor Murguía Lardizábal's harsh criticism of the game, which proposes a not-so-distant future in which the citizens of the Chihuahua border city have apparently fled, replaced by sparsely populated pockets of resistance, known as insurgents (not to be confused with terr'ists). "Violent video games ... attempt to divide the good will of the residents of American and Mexican cities," declared the mayor in a carelessly worded blanket statement. So who's behind this divisive propaganda...? France?! But how do the French stand to benefit from the eruption of the fragile border issue across the Atlantic? Why, Ubisoft Paris? Why rub open centuries-old wounds? Don't you know that the only suitable wargame villains are Nazis and Cold War commies? Best watch yourself lest Chihuahua sic Bono on your ass.

It doesn't surprises me that the goverment takes seriously a fictional game, it surprises me that they even took the liberty to search info of said game.
Normally they don't give a crap whatever gets inside the country (in the videogame area of course).
Screwed @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:11PM
Wow, Joystiq bloggger call mexican chihuahua. BRAVO. A blog site that namecalling other races and country. What has it become.
Chris @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:15PM
Haha, funny stuff. I can see why they'd be upset, maybe a little extreme, but whatever. Oh, and I thinks you talk good screwed. You must be from 'merica! I can tell you're offended, but not really sure why... hmm...

Cd. Juarez in the state of Chihuahua which is the state that the governor of Chihuahua confiscated the game. It's in the first sentence for Pete's sake!

You should really, REALLY do your research before you start playing the race card, or you just look like an uneducated ass.

It's not like the governor has room to talk. Juarez is one fucked up place. All of Mexico is kinda having a dip right now. I just came up from Hermosillo (,Sonora), and their having trouble with a string of murders. They're killing cops over there. A lot of them.
Mexico has a lot more to worry about than wasting resources on confiscating a game.
Larry @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:26PM
What about the first GRAW?
Book 'em Lou...

Don't mind "Screwed", he's the newest n00b troll to Joystiq. He'll cycled out soon enough.
I bet this has roots in 'el Cinco de mayo', when the Mexicans knocked the crap out of the invading French. But, the French would eventually take over Mexico and establish a puppet government, only to loose it again several months later. Now, in retaliation, the French make a anti-mexican game, and the ol' tensions escalate once again.
In short, this is silly.
Night Elve @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:43PM
Well it seems that the Governor has a big issue with violent video games even if there is other bigger problems to resolve.
As someone said here in Mexico right now we have bigger problems to worrie about like all the Cops that are being killed.
We have right now a big problem with the Narcotrafico (Don't know how to say this in english) they are killing cops every single day.
So Juárez Mayor Héctor can kiss my ass, stupid politician.
And yeah Natividad Paraz can kiss my ass too.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 23rd 2007 7:51PM

Night Elve, you're my new best friend.
I really don't think this will have any effect. Mexico is screwed up with or without Cpt. Mitchell shootin' up insurgents and random asshats.... and now that I think of it, it wouldn't be such a bad idea, shooting up the average mexican idiot criminal.
Oh, and just to get on with it, Screwed, do your research. In your defense, however, I did imagine the guv'nor as a bipedal chihuahua dog, which was hilarious.
Before anyone says anything. I'm mexican... and I loved GRAW.
Dan @ Mar 23rd 2007 8:10PM
I like how this mexican dude conveniently ignores the fact that the 'insurgents' you fight in the game are scottish mercenaries (from the sound of their accents) and just as much of GRAW 2 takes place on US soil!!
Oh... and its not real.
qbix @ Mar 23rd 2007 8:22PM
@Endejas: There are politicians in the US looking to ban or put strict restrictions on sex and violence in video games while the federal government is torturing prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, killing civilians in Iraq, and building pipelines in Afghanistan. Things are fucked up in just about every country dude and the job of politicians is not to put all of their efforts and focus strictly on one issue. I understand Mexico's current situation is not the best but neither is the image of Mexicans or South Americans in the United States. If anything, the media just helps in promoting xenophobia through an induced sense of fear and the government proposes building a wall to prevent illegal immigration and terrorism. But hey, they say better fences make better neighbors... right, we'll see. Anyhow, I digress.
All countries have a lot to worry about, including the US, and though I think any form of censorship is wrong and not the best move, I can't blame the governor of Juarez for trying to make his voice heard. Obviously, this won't hurt the sales of the game and the guy is going to be ridiculed by many because it doesn't affect them in the least. However, his effort will be applauded by others plus he got the attention of the media.
Korben @ Mar 23rd 2007 8:31PM
I read a bit about the story Ubisoft put together and it really is ridiculous. More now than ever there's been animosity between the two countries because of the "immigration" issue (a problem all countries around the world has) but seeing as how the game has a definite degree of realism the story is just absurd. Plus most people down there can't afford the video game stuff anyways.

What the fuck!? Im from Nuevo Laredo, in Mexico, border with Laredo, Tx. (five minutes from my house)...
I dont know why you people in USA think that all mexicans are poor people. The fucking inmigrant people that cross the border is the fucking lazy people that not the rest of us mexicans wants.
I have my own bussines of graphic design and publicity, my income last year was about $1500 dllsa week.
And about the 90% economy of Laredo, TX, depends of mexicans (and its true, Im not inventing this... just chek the newpapers). Almost all the mexicans buy all our stuff in USA.
I hate the sterotypes... we are not a country in a fucking desert, and our clother are not a "sombrero" and we dont ride in horses and we dont drink tequila in our meals.
Please, open your mind.... 75% of mexicans we are honest, workers, and not fucking lazy like the inmigrants (they shoul be in jail)
And you Korben... I bet I have more games than you, and a better car, and house.
Just investigate before you make a comments.... check pictures of our cities (I live in Nuevo Laredo) they are cities, not fucking towns
Dont judge a country if you havent been in there.

All that stupid s.o.b. wants to do is run out and fuck the postman up the leg! The moral? Either way, you can't win, so lets all enjoy the games for what they are-just games, and develop a sense of humor and lighten the fuck up! My apologies to all the good postmen out there! lol lol

I'm glad they're here (I live in the Dallas area) for the cheap labor....too many of them, though, compared to how many jobs there really are. It's good to hear somebody makes good money in one of the most dangerous places on earth. Anyway, keep your head down and and stay inside and enjoy what the 360 has to offer now and later. Then again, you probably already do those things.

First of all, fuck you. Secondly, I'm an immigrant and I am not lazy and neither is any of my family. We have all finished school or are still in school, have NO criminal records whatsoever, and treat everyone with respect. "I hate the sterotypes... "..."75% of mexicans we are honest, workers, and not fucking lazy like the inmigrants (they shoul be in jail)", what a very hyprocritical statement. If you're a mexican, you're a very shitty excuse for one. People like you make honest, hard working immigrants look bad. People come to this country for a better life and although it may be illegal, some of us (such as myself) are stuck in the middle being brought here as infants without a choice in the matter. Being a hardworking immigrant without the same rights as others and being forbidden to see certain people or do certain things and having serious limits in life isn't being lazy.

Actually there are a lot of hard working mexicans there, they go there and leave their families alone because you can do a lot here with the money you get paid for a shitty job in USA.
By the way, many many people can afford a game system here, its just not the priority for most of us and thats why gaming isnt THAT popular over here.
By the way, Taco Bell sucks, try eating some real mexican good ;)

Besides being crooked, now the politicians became aware of the "problem" that is portraying a fictional situation in a videogame. Nevermind the drug trafficking, violence, corruption, etc. A videogame is far more important and must be dealt with inmediatly.
