Japanese hardware sales, Mar. 12 - Mar. 18: ridiculously rampant racketeering edition
It's not very often that you get accused of being part of an evil conspiracy. It certainly isn't very often that you're given opportunity to use words such as "collusion," "racketeering" or "farcical," especially not in the same sentence! It is thus with great pleasure that we inform you that Joystiq has been implicated in an imagined and entirely farcical collusion that promotes racketeering. The always entertaining and fundamentally unhinged attorney at lawl, Jack Thompson, has deemed it fit to include us (along with the ESA, Penny Arcade, Gamespot, Kotaku and more) in his latest attack on Take Two. Apparently, the publisher has "collaborated and conspired" with us to further their racketeering activities.
Of course, we're not even sure what racketeering is. "I'm selling these fine leather rackets," springs to mind, but we're convinced it's more complex than that. Perhaps we've been USING TOO MANY CAPITALIZED WORDS? Should we "turn it down a notch," as the old folks are fond of saying? Either way, please let us know in the comments section -- or else we'll punch you in the face and trash your store, ya hear?

Oooh... Sony took a beating this week :(
Charron @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:20PM
Attorney at lawl. I believe that wins.
NoHitHair @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:24PM
Considering the amount of entirely innocent people implicated by the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization) Act, it wouldn't really be that farfetched if Joystiq truly were abused by this law.
Of course, that would most likely require someone at least slightly reputable to back the claim and Thompson hardly accounts for anything more than humorous anecdotes. What an idiot.

We made 'em an offer they couldn't refuse.
(I just bought The Godfather on DVD yesterday. Heh.)

Wait. When did PSP and PS3 sales get higher than PS2? In October last year the PSP overtook the PS2 and the PS3 is higher than PS2. What's happening to good old reliable PS2 with its huge library? Sony is making a profit on PS2 and the loss inducing PSP and PS3 are selling more? That attorney should be stricken. Nintendo continues the revolution.
Slaziman @ Mar 24th 2007 12:10AM
attorney at lawl ftw
dark @ Mar 24th 2007 12:12AM
........and I've never watched Godfather!!
AssemblyLineHuman @ Mar 24th 2007 12:19AM
hvnlysoldr: GBA sales also dropped off a long time ago in Japan, while it's still selling well in the USA. It seems like Japanese people don't like "outdated" technology or something along those lines.
idioteraser @ Mar 24th 2007 12:31AM
Nah the Japanese saw that the DS could play GBA games.
In the states I have seen numerous buyers of the GBA after being told the DS can play gba games ask if the DS can play gameboy color and gameboy games as well. When told no they bought the gba.
In Japan a lot of people moved onto the DS due to the Brain Training games and other such software.
In the states a lot of parents don't want to buy a DS unless really pestered to do so. Wait till Pokemon Diamond and Pearl comes out then you will see DS sales skyrocket in the USA.
Kenny @ Mar 24th 2007 12:33AM
I find the GBA sales in the U.S. odd, because the DS is only...what? $50 more? And the DS plays both DS and GBA games.

Just as a sidenote: The Godfather: The Blackhand Edition for the Wii... really good game.
dvdguy @ Mar 24th 2007 12:49AM
People still buy the GBA to play GB and GBC games. My DS won't play my classic Zelda carts, for example. Gotta have my GBA.
sheppy @ Mar 24th 2007 12:56AM
AAAAANNNNNNDDDDD....
PS3 and PSP sales have returned to their normal tiers. I can't help but wonder what the next sales spike title will be. Everybody's Golf 5 for certain but not sure how strong a spike that will be.
ViperVisor @ Mar 24th 2007 1:33AM
N's outsold Sony on both fronts 3 to 1.
rfom @ Mar 24th 2007 1:43AM
It interesting but it does seem from the sales over the last few weeks that for Japan the most important factor is SIZE
DS Lite > PSP > Wii > PS2 > PS3 > 360
Szu @ Mar 24th 2007 1:53AM
Good lord, all the Game Boy systems took a dive. Nintendo should just get out of the handheld business. They clearly have no idea how to keep sales up.
David Hinkle @ Mar 24th 2007 2:01AM
"Attorney at lawl" is probably the best phrase I've ever read.

At the tender age of 3, one Joystiq blogger has won the internet with his phrase "attorney at lawl".
(don't know his real age... so I just used Joystiq's... close enough)
Rubang B @ Mar 24th 2007 3:49AM
Wii and DS Lite are 69.3% of all sales. Holy balls.
Ibrahim @ Mar 24th 2007 2:21PM
Ludwig wins teh intarwebs. GG guys, GG. Don't forget to unclog those tubes when you're done.
teitoku @ Mar 24th 2007 5:14AM
Um..."I'm selling these fine leather jackets" is a quote from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, not Curse of Monkey Island...
Hanan @ Mar 24th 2007 5:47AM
Microsoft needs another hit game for Japan. business looks like in the pre-Blue Dragon era again for the X360.
t_m @ Mar 24th 2007 6:59AM
we told u guys to stop mntioning him, but would you listen?? OH NO! You "knew best".. and now look whats happened.. you are all going to rot in prison for the rest of your natural lives!
or something..
Koopaknight29 @ Mar 24th 2007 7:35AM
Szu, please, PLEASE, tell me that post was drenched in sarcasm and I'm just being oblivious at 7 in the morn'...
In other news, it seems that all is as it should be over in the land of the rising sun and Joysiq is making fun at Jack Thompson. Jeez guys get new material, sheesh. Yep, just your typical da- hey wait, who are you? What are you doing here?! W-wait I-I'll take it back I swear! No wait!!! Ahhhhgg-
*post has encountered an unexpected fault, forwarding message automatically*

teitoku -
Actually, it would be both. When talking to Wally at the beginning of the game, before introducing himself, Guybrush has the option to say, "I'm selling these fine leather jackets." Wally will respond with interest and Guybrush will say he doesn't actually have one. May have originated with Last Crusade (Indy also says it in Fate of Atlantis, forget which path though), but MI still has the quote.
mr mobius @ Mar 24th 2007 8:56AM
OMG!!
Joystiq, Nintendo and the Japanese people are conspiring against Sony!!
Jack Thompson, where are you? Sort this collusion out now!!
Anywho...
Interesting to see the only consoles up are Nintendo.
Jack Thompson is amusing, and I look forward to more hilarious anicdotes from the leader of the lawl party. If it wasn;t for Jack Thompson, many game webcomics would have less material and the games industry would be a duller place.
Kye @ Mar 24th 2007 9:18AM
Also Rubang B
Nintendo produces 63.6% of all the product on that list.

rfom,
you'd almost be right if the 360 was bigger then the ps3
Aaron @ Mar 25th 2007 9:20AM
My god, can you call Nintendo anything but the big comeback story this year? Poor Sony just went #1 in the industry to a distant #3rd... Hate to say it, but I think Sony's glory days are officially over. At least for this generation.
Congrats Nintendo. You did what was once thought impossible.
Richard Mitchell @ Mar 24th 2007 12:54PM
Oh, Ludwig. Will you go to the prom with me? Any prom. We can crash one if you like.
Mr Khan @ Mar 24th 2007 2:54PM
Another flaw in rfom's argument is that Wii is bigger than PSP
Maybe its all in order of how much they like the color
Lets say: Japanese love White (Wii/DS Lite), are ambiguous towards black (PS3/PSP) and hate anything with a little green (360)
that makes more sense
Slaziman @ Mar 24th 2007 6:38PM
Ludwig is the king of the internet, attorney at lawl is just too funny
Szu @ Mar 25th 2007 2:08AM
@24
My comment wasn't only drenched with sarcasm, it was like a jelly donut filled with sarcasm.
Instead of jelly, of course.
Koopaknight29 @ Mar 25th 2007 6:36AM
Thanks for the clear up there Szu.
Mmm, jelly donut...
God am I tired.
