Microsoft secret agents resort to subterfuge at PS3 Euro-launches
Microsoft pulled no punches yesterday during the European launch of the PlayStation 3. Deciding that deviousness was the order of the day, they had agents in both London and Paris throwing monkey wrenches into the works at Sony-sponsored events that included:
- Handing out chairs to the weary fans waiting in the PS3 lines that were printed with a link to this site on the back of them.
- Sending SMS messages to game journalists saying "The Xbox 360 team wishes you a good night."
- Driving boats past the Sony event adorned with "XBOX 360 HEARTS YOU" signs.
- Arming themselves with whistles and blowing them from rooftops to drown out the noise of Sony PR.
Check out the roundup of coverage:
Watch - Playthrough, source of the video above
Watch - Jeux-France.com's writeup, video, and boatload (get it?) of photos
Read - Eurogamer's summary of the event
Read - LCI.fr's story about the French events, translated after the jump (thanks, dekox!).
The title of the article is "La Playstation 3 fait un bide" meaning more or less "Playstation 3 launch is a flop"
Here is a quick translation:
"Three boats. a 15 metres inflatable playstation 3. All of it next to the Eiffel tower: Sony had it all prepared so that the launch of its new baby is a success. Its failure is only bigger.
At the evening's begining, 200 journalists are on site. However, they quickly notice that something isn't going right. Three months ago, the place was packed at 10PM for the wii launch. This time, the place is desperatly empty. As the time went by, the situation became critical for Sony.
The few fans that are on site are astonished to be alone. Serge 31 years old, tries to explain: "It's true it is expensive... but with an HD reader, i's worth it." Franck, 19, who has been waiting in the cold for seven hours already regrets. "I'm disapointed, there's nobody here. I could have waited tomorrow. And they had promised animations, but nothing is happening". A DJ from a partner radio is repeating the name of the console"
This is getting long: here is the google translation of the end of the article (I've modified it a little bit to make it clearer)
40 security guards for as much customers
next to the site, Kevin, 21 years, who came from Montfermeil hangs with his friends Celine and Michel. For 10 years, he has been Sony fan and a happy owner of Playstations 1 and 2. However, he was denied the access by the security which asked for an invitation to him. "I came from the suburbs, perhaps they don't like my face ".
The security, 40 agents mobilized since the afternoon for about as many customers, confirms at least an instruction: any purchaser must present a means of payment, credit card or cash. "They told to us to get ready for 3000 people", says, chuckling, one of the vigils. Sony had announced a projection of the last James Bond, but it's the agent OSS 117 which is projected on a giant screen [OSS 117 is a french parody of James Bond]. It is a sort of metaphor for the evening in front of a literally deserted pit.
"A non-event"
Shortly after 22 hours, several specialized journalists receive a sms from Microsoft's marketing team: "Xbox TEAM wishes you a good evening". A few minutes later, a barge flanked with large streamers "Xbox 360 loves you" passes back and forth in front of Sony's party. On its roof, a bunch of employees of Microsoft armed with whistles whistle the sworn enemy. The schoolkid joke amuses.
Not at Sony in any case, where the faces are tended and where one awaits nothing more than the end of a nightmare evening. A FNAC representative, co-organiser of the event, looks sad and enumerates first explanations. "Successes of Wii, unfavourable time, date badly chosen, and especially prices of the console made this evening a non-event". At 23 hours, the store-barge of the FNAC finaly accosts. On its roof, a giant inflatable Playsation lit by a superpoweful projector placed on the other side of the Seine. The giant screen now displays images of the games of the PS3 but the cold is arctic and nobobody pays attention.
Midnight. Without shouts nor applauses, the first purchasers are invited in the store-boat. One by one, they get out, with a smile. In fifteen minutes, it is finished, about fifty of the thousand available consoles are sold... The journalists harass the first purchaser, "very pleased". Not far from there, at the Champs-Elysées FNAC, opened for the occasion like a dozen other stores of the group in France, the shelves are still full. Here, of the 1000 consoles they had, hardly 300 were sold.
[Thanks, dekox]

It has been pointed out to me that apparently these antics are making fans of both consoles angry? Seriously, as a gamer for as long as I can remember, I love this! It's a strong, healthy, public rivalry that is keeping us entertained and will (hopefully) give Sony the kick in the ass it needs to really start producing somethign that is going to sell thier system to the masses.
Jack of No Trades @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:12PM
Poor Sony.
Nate @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:20PM
What a waste of time. Actually, I must be working in the wrong job cause I can't believe people get paid to do that stuff, lol! But really, all platforms need to survive or one will ensure a monopoly of the industry eliminating competitive pricing & innovation. Cheers all!
The1 @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:13PM
There is nothing wrong with good clean competition. Now Sony your turn, keep it clean and funny.
Myke @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:15PM
Also, can I get everyone who was POSITIVE that the PS3 would sell out ALL OVER EUROPE chime in and admit they were wrong? I'm not trying to start something here, but there were alot of assholes touting the hardships of Sony as minimal and the PS3 would have no problem selling out regardless. I'd like some folks (I could drop some names, but I won't) to man-up and admit they were wrong...
Benny @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:17PM
It's superb PR but I can't help but feel slightly sickened by it. It's almost childish.
Flute Suit @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:17PM
This is good news, people. Remember- selling through your launch allotment is not good, according to Sony.
Jake @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:17PM
Man, the Sony fanboys don't post on these threads at all anymore. There has been more bad press the last 2 weeks than I can remember. The PS3 is selling like crap in Europe. Ouch! DMC4 going multi, Ace Combat straight up gone, FFXIII rumors swirling again, a 360 SKU with extra value/price ratio, etc. I am just waiting for the MGS4 and FFXIII to 360 and/or PC news.
Dark_Jedi @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:18PM
PS3 Europe launch.
Failed...
Dolla Dolla @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:18PM
This is good fun. I'd love to be in either MS or Sony's Marketing department right about now. For Sony, I'd be campaigning something serious about the Xbox Elite with it's added HDMI port, yet still no internal wireless adapter found in the PS3, Wii, PSP, and DS. And if I was Microsoft, I'd be singing from the rooftops every time a Sony exclusive went Multiplatform. Good fun!

Hopefully this brings prices down. I could use a fifty dollar webserver LOL.
Phil @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:22PM
Myke,
Yeah, Sheppy is most apparently absent. I no longer see his, "The PS3 will set out across Europe in four days, trust me." posts. Mmmmm, where is he?
Blind fanboism benefits no one. Tell Sony you want a price drop and games.....make them actually work to please you, the consumer.
I couldn't wait for the PS3 until I started hearing the same stupid hype they put out for the PS2 (Toy Story graphics for the PS2, 4D graphics for the PS3 and of course the BS Killzone 2 and Motorstorm trailers that they assured us were actual gameplay).
I hope they don't fail, but they need to learn their lessons, those arrogant rich a-holes ("all the worthless peons will need to work two jobs if they want to afford one")
WebPimp @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:23PM
I love the website one. that is just awesome.
LaughingTarget @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:23PM
Phil -
Technically, the PS3 can still sell out in 4 days (they have 3 more). A third of them went at launch, so if the stores manage to sell the same numbers over the next two days, there could be a sellout and Sheppy could still be right.
Phil @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:25PM
LT,
Yeah, but I doubt it. I was giving his quote the benefit of four days (I think he said weekend). Anyway, my question still stands with, where is he and how come I don't hear his crystal ball proclamations of a European sellout of the PS3?
MosquitoControl @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:27PM
Australia is reporting the same thing:
http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/11813/Australian_PS3_Launch_Impressions.html
I would have speculated that maybe these countries just aren't big into midnight launches and sales will pick up today, but the Australian report says that Nintendo midnight launches were packed to the gills.
Phil @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:27PM
and LT, one location sold a little less than a third according to the post (300 out of 1000) while the other sold 50 of 1000, and then there was 40 of 1000 at their boat store near the Eiffel tower.

Oh, SNAP.
Well played, Microsoft, well played. Take note: these were not negative ads, by any measure. There was no "360 Rulez! Sony Dr00lz!" type of antics, here. At most, this could be considered mild ribbing. Exactly the right tone to take. The best thing Sony can do is ignore it. React too strongly, and they'll sound shrill and threatened.
Hopefully Sony realizes this is Europe's way of saying: "Hi, there. We're a really big market, and we don't like being ranked as a second-class customer or being taken for granted."

This is just good, clever, in-your-face competition. I'm not just saying this because Microsoft did it, either- if Sony or Nintendo had've done it, it would still be a clever move.
Competition is good.
GunForHire @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:40PM
I can tell you that my store in Northern Ireland received 60 units for launch, which is about 20 more than the preorders we had, so they're sitting on the shelves waiting for someone to buy them.
Very different story from the Wii and 360 launches.
Chocolate Starfish @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:33PM
That story almost made me a little sad for Sony.
Seifer @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:46PM
Oh, Microsoft... you remind me of Sega's antics of old back when Nintendo was king. Sony, the line has been drawn, the gauntlet is thrown down, and the glove has been slapped. You know what you have to do.
Arno @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:47PM
Blowing whistles from the rooftops? Seriously?
I'm a big 360 fan but even I thought that last one was kind of lame. Otherwise, kudos MS, especially the website printed on the chairs.
arrrgh @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:49PM
Ok Sony, so what's next? Going to keep shoving more formats down everyone's throats? This is what happens :P
God bless you sony, if it weren't for your clumsy business practices, these would be some slow assed news days :)
Crono @ Mar 23rd 2007 1:58PM
Reminds me of the old Nintendo vs Genesis days.
Now THAT was a console war.
Now if we can just kick sony out of the game, we can go back to the good old 2 platform war between Nintendo and the spiritual successor to Sega.
Myke @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:01PM
"Reminds me of the old Nintendo vs Genesis days.

Sega does what Ninten-DON'T!!!!
And could you give me some background on your MS being the spiritual successor to Sega comment? I'm a HUGE fan of both lines of systems (my heart lies with the Dreamcast, and that isn't changing this generation at least) and I'd love to hear the connection, don't let me down...
D @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:01PM
@23 - I think all the other stuff was okay but blowing whistles? Seriously - what kind of company are you running? As part of Sony, I think I would show up to the Xbox360 Elite launch or a MS event and start using air horns.
Eventually the police will be called and that will be even more free publicity. Better yet, they can throw gasoline on the people and light them on fire. Yeah, that's a great idea too. Can you tell yet that I am a MS fanboy because there is nothing we won't do to seriously hamper someone else's enjoyment.
Any my last comment. If the 360 is so great and there are so many games out for it, why are there all these 360 fans out there pulling these pranks? Shouldn't they be indoors playing their console?
waLLy @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:04PM
Looks like I will be able to afford a PS3 by the end of '08!
jaysins @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:05PM
After all the smack Sony talked about MS and how much dominate their console would be I think it's fair play. Funny fair play at that. Here's to another console war.
GunForHire @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:05PM
@27
It was marketers, not fans. They were paid to go do it.
Crono @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:07PM
Myke,
I dunno really. I never had a sega until I married into a genesis/cd combo :)
I just keep hearing old sega fans saying that about the 360. Something about similarities to dreamcast.
mr_nihilism @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:08PM
Maybe the whistle-blowing was a little much, but everything else seems fair to me...and quite brilliant on their part.
pirahna @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:08PM
Que Sony EU rep reporting the following remark:
"You find me a PS3 on any store shelf and I'll buy it from you for 900 euros."
I know it's coming...
wait for it...
wait...
BOOM! Click-click-denyied!
robert @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:09PM
if sony had shown up at the zero hour event for the release of the 360 doing the same type of stunts nobody would have thought it was funny.
everyone would have been talking about how arrogant sony was and how they had to resort to cheap tactics in order to sell the PS3 by hijacking the competitions launch event.
and if either microsoft or sony had stepped all over the Wii launch like this... i can only imagine the amount of pissed off comments.
NintendoFanbot @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:10PM
Peter Moore used to be with Dreamcast!
ITS HIS FAULT
sheppy @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:10PM
Wait, ummm, when did I say PS3 allotments will sell out in Europe? Find me a quote (hopefully Shadow Sheppy wasn't up to his usual shenanigans).
Also, I think the next step Sony should do is offer a bounty on bricked 360. You know, cut the price of PS3 in half and offer up a free game for every bricked 360 they collect. Then, during X07, drive this truckload/s of broken systems to the front of the event. Kind of a "truth" stunt, I'll admit. But it would be one hell of a blow.
Jason @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:11PM
Would have been extra funny if the whistles cried out "Bullshit!" when blown. Of course, in France, I think it translates to "Mere de la Boof." Shit of the bull. At least thats what my grandpa told me.

Must be nice to have an evil twin to blame all the stupid stuff you ever said on, Sheppy.
Not that I doubt you had an evil twin stealing your name. Its just now it provides you the opportunity to deny anything.
"Oh, uh, that wasn't me. that was shadow sheppy"
you're untouchable, like those gangster busters in chicago during prohibition.
arrrgh @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:17PM
You're right sheppy, but I don't know if sony has the cash for it, they're going to have to start saving their money for loan interest payments thanks to the euro-launch failure
sheppy @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:21PM
@Crono,
I said I expected it to be a success. Therein, I was wrong. I never said it would sell out. But I have found quotes thrown at me that were not mine in the past.
@arrrgh
Sony is a big company and one thing ALONE could finance that particular burn. Spiderman 3.
Phil @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:23PM
Sheppy, You wrote the below on the Xbox Elite messages:
148. @Jack Off No Trades
The gaming industry except for MS studios and Nintendo are moving away from exclusives. Stupid to put all your eggs in one basket.
If MS told 360 owners to care about motion control, then they would.
Look at reviews that aren't posted by XBox and Nintendo fanboys and you'll see very positive reviews on the Sony motion controls.
The fan isn't the noise problem on the 360, the DVD drive is. It's loud enough to be heard from a room away, through walls. The problem is that it needs to run all the time since the developers are forced to use the DVD all the time since MS made the decision to not have a hard drive standard. Ah, choices are such a good thing for the consumer, aren't they?
DVD9 obviously isn't sufficient otherwise Blue Dragon wouldn't require four of them.
Refer to the fact that the DVD is getting hit constantly due to a lack of a harddrive for rationale as to why MS made a huge mistake by not making it standard.
Wait until Friday to see just how Sony will be selling out every unit in Europe. Then tell us how the PS3 is fading away.
More and more FUD. Again, how much are they paying you?!?!
Posted at 1:46PM on Mar 20th 2007 by sheppy
Pay attention to: "Wait until Friday to see just how Sony will be selling out every unit in Europe. Then tell us how the PS3 is fading away."
Well, here we are and we are seeing 10% (if they are lucky) of units walking off shelves. So yes, we waited until Friday and now we get to see the PS3 fading away. (I was giving you a four day grace period for the consoles to sell out, so we will dance again come Monday....LOL)
Myke @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:25PM
"Sony is a big company and one thing ALONE could finance that particular burn. Spiderman 3."
Well, yeah, that movie will do well. No argument here, I'll be there opening night. But really, how much money do you think they're losing on development costs from the PS3, coupled with the fact that it's not selling so they're not making money off the games. I don't know, there are so many facets to take into account that nobody but a Sony accountant could tell us for sure. But I think that *IF* the PS3 really does come in last this gen, Spiderman 3 will just be a drop in the empty bucket of money they thought they'd be raking in off the machine and it's games.
surur @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:26PM
The whistles and horns were blown from the roof of the xboat, not surrounding buildings. That and the text message was all part of the x-boat stunt, and not separate.
So far I count 3 stunts - the xchair in London, xboat in France and xbeer in Australia. All good fun. The German 'smash your x-box and get a free ps3' stunt is in a bit poorer taste I think.
