It is a great day for Nintendo hardware and electronic music! We continue to be impressed with the fanboy craft culture, and chiptunes are a very cool development of that culture. This modified NES acts as a sort of visual counterpart to the chiptune idea: rather than using an NES sound chip to make live music, the system can be set to cause glitches in-game along with the beat of music. The effect is somewhere between a strobe light and a Game Genie. It's also a cool companion piece for the Wii Loop Machine.
We want one to accompany our all-Donkey Konga and Jam Sessions band. We wonder, does it only work with Super Mario Bros., or can we change the game to fit the mood of the music? Follow-up question: what kind of music is appropriate for a pulsating, glitched out display of M.C. Kids? Check out the video after the break. All glory to the hypno-NES.
