Project: Top Secret drops the men-in-tights, goes racing instead

When David Perry announced his democratic MMO project to the world, most figured that it would be from the same ilk as World of Warcraft or EverQuest. A fantasy MMO where you and your friends bicker amongst yourselves over who gets the +1 sword until someone gets their feelings hurt. Well, that's not the case as Perry has told GameSpot that Project: Top Secret is currently a massively multiplayer racing title, set for completion "by GDC 2008."
Joining the list of "things Perry has never done" is a racing title, though it may not matter when 23,000 amateur developers are all focused on the same project. Still, we wonder what the technical demographic is amongst that vast pool of talent. Certainly not the first vehicle-based MMO, Top Secret has an uphill battle ahead as titles such as Motor City Online and Auto Assault never made much of an impact in the marketplace.

What about Atari's Test Drive Unlimited?
Seems that this driving/racing MMO idea does not appeal to many gamers.
Unless they make it sort of a Mad Max type world....limited gas supplies/water and you and your "clan" need to hold area in order to be able to refuel and go out and try to capture more area? I don't know.....

Too soon junior!

This could be cool if done right, but I can't imagine it will have much replay after a month or two. I go back to racing games after year when I know my skills will suck again, but you re-learn quickly anyway. The exhilaration is gone after the first final win.

Phil:
You just described Auto Assault.

Man, what a cheesy movie that was.
I wonder if Redline's going to be any better.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights was a great movie. They should make the game one of those post-apocalyptic movies of barren wastelands. Just you trying to out-race gangs in search of the next gas station.

Man, what a great picture. My VTEC just kicked in, yah?

They better have cars racing through beautiful space vistas on colorful laser-highways with turrets to fend of space pirates or nobody will give two shits about this. No matter if 24.000 people worked on it and it's the most wicked game design experiment EVAR etc.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Mar 26th 2007 3:31PM
You know what I'd like 24,000 people to do? Recreate every freeway in their respective area, and have the most badass races ever.
It'd be kind of like Initial D. You have guys who can dominate their sector of the globe because they're really familiar with the turf, but if you're a skilled driver, you can hold your own and unseat the #1 guy.
How sweet would that be?

Holy crap.... that easily takes the most hilarious blog pic of my lifetime.
I cannot wait to use that on some Civic/Integra friends.
VVT-I fo life....
or something. Anyways. That last dude's idea sounded pretty awesome. I'd own the 15/55/57/210/91.

I was going to be in on this...but they announce the type of game without asking us for much feedback? They don't really want our input...

Ha. Brent is from Southern Cali.
