BBC: Sony sold 600K PlayStation 3s during Euro launch
77
Before going off on a wild tangent about PS3 chips being used in arcade machines, a short BBC news blurb claims, "More than a million [PlayStation 3] consoles were shipped across Europe on launch day last week with 600,000 sold." Of course, this figure includes the UK's record-breaking 165K unit debut. So, unlike what some folks think, there seems to be a benefit to keeping stock on store shelves. Wikipedia reports 930K units sold in North America to date, and 720K units sold in Japan; if you add in the BBC's unconfirmed 600K figure, Europe has purchased nearly one quarter of all PS3s sold to date. Not bad for a weekend.

You'd think that Europe would hate Sony after they essentially told them that they don't matter as much as NA or Japan.

I am unsure quite how to look at this.
The Good Way: The PS3 sold 165k (record) in UK at launch and 600k across Europe.
The Bad Way: The PS3 is sitting on shelves with only 600k sold in Europe. They shipped a million and only sold 600k, with many units available on ebay. Even this isn't totally bad, though. The 360 was impossible to get for a couple of months in most of Europe, but I don't even know if they had shipped 600k by the time stock caught up. I can almost guarantee the Wii would have sold out in Europe if launched with a million.
Either way I really like how Sony handled the European launch. From now on, console makers need to just ship an adequate supply for their launches, even if it means manufacturing for an extra week or month. It stays more civilized and there isn't all that ebay madness where over half the consoles sell to somebody just looking for money and not actual gamers.
In the real world, though, Sony probably was only able to ship that many because the system is selling less than projected in the US and Japan. It would also be hard to do a worldwide launch where you ship, say, a million systems to each major region. 3 million stock floating around is logistically and economically a nightmare.

Personally, I hope all three consoles are here in the race. Competition breeds better products for it's comsumers.
I myself love my 360 mostly because I choose not to own more than one console. There are certain franchises I couldn't live without (Halo and Bioware RPG's). I just don't have the time or money to feed more than one system. But I do get excited to see titles like Drakes Fortune and Motorstorm. I think all 3 consoles have something to offer, it just depends on what you're into.
Playstation is known for it's Japanese styled RPG's. Xbox has some killer FPS franchises and great online. Nintendo has classic franchises dating back to NES as well as games that appeal to everyone. I don't see why there is only room for one. Each one has something to offer.
I wish I could own all three. Unfortunately, I'm getting older and don't have that kind of time anymore. But it's never been a more exciting time to be a gamer. I just hope that Wii and PS3 will keep Microsoft on it's toes at developing more reliable hardware. That would be my only gripe. Otherwise, 2007 should be a really great year for games.

Jody,
I could swear you said the other day you only own a Wii and you usually post pro-Wii. Preferring a particular console doesn't necessarily make you a fanboy, but owning only one console makes you not a multiconsole winner.

GBA outsold the PS3 for a month in the US? Are you serious? So what?
The Toyota Corolla outsells the entire ranges of Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari every month; are you saying that the Japanese hatchback is a better vehicle than any supercar offering from those manufacturers? Corolla better than a Gallardo, DB9 or Enzo, is it?
Why don't you just admit it: you like Nintendo best because your weekend job flipping burgers doesn't give you enough cash for a decent console. And your Mom won't raise your allowance.
Dumbasses.....off to bed: it's a school night.

if we (Europe) buy a major share of the consoles why are we always hit with the shitty end of the stick it's about time games content and hardware had a world wide release date

Who really knows how true these numbers are....but one question I have is if they are true, WHY? With tall the negativity surrounding the PS3 lately, the lack of games, and minor flaws - why would so many people go for the PS3? It is a capable machine, but right now it is lacking severely in the most important content, the games.
With news of losing exclusives and such it boggles my mind why nearly 1 million people in Europe flocked to get the thing. Most probably already own a 360, which has a good library of games right now. So why go spend over 600 bux; totaling nearly $1000 after games and such?!
What type of money do Europeans make anyhow? Apparently plenty.
Ive never been a big PS fan. Maybe because I dont get into RPGs. I just find them lame and boring. And besides those games, most of the PS games I fet were just crap. Sure the PS2 for instance has tons of games, but in reality the majority of them are half assed crap. What makes people think that the same wont happen with the PS3? But again, people must like Sony and the PS consoles, cuz theyve sold millions on top of millions of them. But personally to me, that doesnt say much. We are the same society where millions went to see that movie Norbit and many for some God awful reason, liked it. People today like crap. They settle for lame, idiotic, crap. So I guess I am just not as surprised as I thought I was.
Anyhow, congrats to PS3 I suppose. Now where the hell is my Xbox Live and perhaps Halo 3 Beta???? Is it me or does over 14 hours for "regular maintenance" seem a little excessive?

@ those who are saying Wikipedia is an unreliable source for sales figures... actually, believe it or not, it's actually *very* reliable. This is because reliable sources are cited for each region. Even if you were to vandalize the pages so that they displayed incorrect numbers, you could still either...
1. Click the "History" tab to find a non-vandalized version of the articles, or
2. Click on the cited sources to confirm their accuracy.
Not to mention that your vandalism would probably be reverted almost instantly. (Not that I would recommend trying it, of course, since Wikipedians have enough to do as it is.)

And yet the launch events were empty and the store shelves are still grossly overstocked with consoles. Something isn't adding up here.

Not to throw mud on your face or anything, but ... a few posts back, one of the Joystiq bloggers confirmed this and did ban sheppy's shadow.
But, its cool, we already notice most of your arguments backed by false information or mistruths, so no one really pays much attention to you anyways :)
Funny thing is, you were directly addressed by C.Grant when it happened, I applaud you for your selective memory :)

I'm a 360/wii owner but I'm sick and tired of you fanboys trying to rationalize how the PS3 is acutally not selling that well even if it is. The worst example is saying how it sold more than the 360 in the same time period because the 360 was out of stock, when the same people laugh about the PS3 being in stock. Despite how much you hate Sony, the PS3 is going to sell well, get over it.
The same goes for these blogs, PS3 sales were nowhere as bad as you guys wanted to make it seem. Not like I expected unbiased reporting but at least try to maintain some accuracy...

The ppl who fight and argue about xbox v ps3 are idiots. More so are the ppl who can't wait for the ps3 to fail. Do they not understand that the success of the PS3 is good for XBox buyers and vica versa. If the ps3 starts biting into xbox sales MS will consider a price drop or includ a hd-dvd drive or something like that. Similarily good XBox sales will keep Sony on its toes. It's not in the consumers intrest(that's US) for either MS, Sony, Nitendo ect to have it all their own way, the more players in the market the more choice the better.
