Resistance and Motorstorm topping charts in UK (not Europe)
After briefly, mistakenly and idiotically reducing the entirety of Europe, with all its many cultures, languages and shoes to just the UK in an article yesterday, we've taken steps to reinforce the pathways that connect our brains to our rapidly typing fingers. Said fingers insist that we now draw your attention to the PS3's continued success in Insomniac's first-person shooter debuted in the number one spot, with the muddy Motorstorm slotting into second position. Virtua Fighter 5 is all the way down in 14th position, bested by Namco's symphony of slide, Ridge Racer 7 (11th) and the comparitively out of tune F1: Championship Edition (7th). Finally, historically accurate crab battle simulations find themselves relegated to 16th position.
With these PS3 exclusive (for now, in the case of Virtua Fighter 5) titles making a splash in the charts alongside the PS3's strong launch performance in

PS3 FTW! now all the Sony fanboys have nothing more to say.
I think this generation is going to be close. PS3 is an expensive powerhouse machine. 360 is middle to high end with lots of games. Wii is low end, but fun.
I think they are really fitting their niches nicely, little bit of overlapping but not enough to be in total competition.
Colin @ Mar 27th 2007 12:24PM
I truly believe that the current version of the Wii will not be around 3 years from now...not that that is a bad thing but the difference in power between the 360 and PS3 and the Wii will become more and more apparent and as the 360 and PS3 drop in price (along with Nintendo's reluctance to lower prices (GBA STILL sells for $100 WTF!) less and less people will choose the underpowered Wii. Wii 2 by Spring 2009. (Also known as Gamecube 2.1)
Todd @ Mar 27th 2007 12:33PM
Uh, no surprise. The PS3 has very little games available, and anyone who bought a PS3 will need something to play. Of course these titles are selling.
Kye @ Mar 27th 2007 12:37PM
Earlier today I was in an HMV, in Birmingham, UK. And I asked the sales girl if there were any PS3s left. Here's a run-down of the convo.
Me - Are there any PS3s left?
Her - Yes :)
Me - Loads or a few?
Her - Loads
Me - About how many?
Her - "About 50"
Yes that's right, about fif-f&cking-ty!
Me - Do you have any Wii's?
Her - No
Me - But you have PS3's?
Her - Yes, would you like to buy one?
Me - No :)
But the inner me said - This might be a one off, so I went to ASDA (owned by Walmart) and asked the guy at the electronics desk if they had any PS3s left
Me - Got any PS3s?
Him - Yes
Me - Are you about to run out?
Him - No, "there's plenty of them"
So Im calling complete bs on that story yesterday.
Him - Do you want to buy one?
Me - No :)
I am a Ninty fan, but I always give credit where its due. The 360 is good and I'm gona get one come Halo3 time. But Sony gets no love.
As for momentum, now that the Sony fanboys have all got one, I think it's going to be a pityful, fall from the top for Sony.
End.

Oh no, another "Wii won't last" comment. Like we haven't seen those on every thread in every forum. Get real man.
I don't know exactly but numbers don't lie. The Wii is the fastest selling console of all three next gen systems. At the speed in which Wii's are flying off shelves, by the time it cools down we will be heading into the summer season which will perk up sales again (for all three systems).
Personally I'll be shocked if the Wii does not sell 12 million (at least) by christmas. As for the PS3, I'll buy one when its worth it.
- I don't want BluRay
- I don't want Home
- I want games (Resistance isn't worth $600, however Metroid would be)
When is MGS4 and FFXIII supposed to come out again?
Travis @ Mar 27th 2007 12:53PM
@Kye
I understand your point that the sales might taper off very quickly for the PS3 now that the launch is over.
However, the way you're going about making your point is kinda silly. If Sony would have launched with the same amount as Microsoft and Nintendo they would have sold out. So then you'd be more impressed?
If you would have asked the salesperson if there were 360s available his answer would have been yes. But you wouldn't come back making the argument that the 360 is no longer going to sell well.
Gamey McGee @ Mar 27th 2007 12:56PM
#4, you could do well to understand supply and demand. If there is enough supply, everyone can buy one that wants one. To assume you want a shortage is to call out the inadequacies of *other* vendors, not Sony.
I am sick to death of people deciding their little piece of reality transfers to everyone else's. Great. You asked 2 dudes if their store had PS3's and now the PS3 is globally awash because, somehow, having units in stock at 2 stores means Sony can't sell PS3's. Great logic.
The bottom line is they sold well over 540k units in 3 days throughout Europe. They're selling more quickly than the 360 did in it's first 4 months, and they should given their brand.
Furthermore, to say the first 50 yards of a mile race is an indicator of future success would also be wrong. Time will tell, as you point out.
Slaziman @ Mar 27th 2007 1:08PM
The problem here is that (in the UK) the PS3 has already met demand at 165,000. It's a pretty low number to be meeting the demand of the successor of the bestselling console ever while having massive brand loyalty in Europe. 165,000 people wanted it and got it. There were no more people that walked home without a PS3, there were no intimidating long lines, so who else wants a PS3? If the Wii would've had a bigger supply, it would've easily sold more than PS3 at launch.
As for the software, let's see if this continues or if it was just a one-time massive spike.
Todd @ Mar 27th 2007 1:08PM
@Gamey McGee
You're absolutely right, the PS3 did sell a lot. However your views are a bit askew. Sounds to me like you're focused on a launch race. We will never really know the true answer to this apparent race. The Wii completely sold out during launch, and furthermore seems to STILL be sold out, in the UK.
The numbers are low because of the major global supply and demand (of which you speak of) consisting with the Wii. The UK has a shortage, but if there was enough units I would bet the Wii would still be outselling the PS3. You're delighted by the numbers, but the numbers are askew.
In response to your retaliation to #4. Why don't you conduct a poll at local UK retailers and let us know how many still have PS3 stock and how many are out of the Wii.
Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 1:16PM
It doesn't matter, todd. Floor stock was an adequate indicator of demand in america because there was such a low number of units available at launch. "Sold Out" PS3 meant that people wanted them, but there weren't any to be had. In the UK and Europe, sony launched with plenty of stock, more than enough to meet demand, so its not a suprise that they're not sold out.
All this means is that you can't use floor stock as an accurate indicator of product demand. I'm going to agree with Slaziman. Because there is a plethora of stock, everyone who wanted one in the launch window got one. Sales will probably be brisk for another 2 weeks (so that everybody can get paid and go get one) but after that, it'll probably slump back off.
Let the SDF have there little victory dance (annoying as they are), it won't last.

Posted at 12:52PM on Mar 27th 2007 by Geoff Gibson
When did Metroid become an awesome franchise? they were decent on the gba, but all the other games sucked.
I dont't remember well where I heard it, but it had already been mentioned before that the Wii wasn't meant to last that long, there is no need for the Wii fans, it was todl from the beginning, just like it was told that the ps3 would last the longest...
"When is MGS4 and FFXIII supposed to come out again?"
When are the AAA Wii titles supposed to come out? oh wait....oops?
PS: I love Nintendo but hate dumb fanboys :)
Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 1:26PM
"When did metroid become an awesome fanchise?"
August 6, 1986
It became the best sidescroller shooter of all time on March 19, 1994.
And it invented the 1st person platformer genre on November 15, 2002.
Shun the non-believer!
Shuuuuuunnnna!
Todd @ Mar 27th 2007 1:30PM
We may be on the same wavelength. With the figures for each launch somewhat askew, there will be no real way to find out who really came out on top. From this point on, it's about long term longevity of sales than anything.
In a perfect world, we would have two competing companies launch their products on the same day, with the same number of consoles, and the public would be the deciding factor of who sparks more interest. With the shortages of the Wii globally, and shortages of the US PS3 launch, there won't be any way to really find out who won the launch race.
What we do know is the PS3 sold a lot in the UK. The Wii is still sold out apparently.
Admiral @ Mar 27th 2007 1:35PM
No one's doing a victory dance. I for one am pleased to see the PS3 selling well in Europe because that means a greater likelihood that the console I chose will continue to exist. Just as I'm glad to see that the 360 will continue to exist, and the Wii will live one.
Choices = Good. More Gamers, more love.
Vidikron @ Mar 27th 2007 1:36PM
@12
Well, the first 1st person platformer title may need to go to Jumping Flash. Other than that, I agree. Though I personally didn't care for the Cube Metroids. The side scrollers are 10x better, IMO.
andres @ Mar 27th 2007 1:47PM
heres the truth of the matte. The fact that the PS3 didnt sell out is a failure. Heres why, as a business you need to make money. Items sitting on a shelf in a store does not create money. In fact it makes the company lose money since the store will not order more till they feel they need more.
Sony saying that there launch being a success is only a half truth. Yes it was a success they sold a large percentage of the inital shipment. Now did it have a truly sucessful launch? The answer is No.
Why no well because they didnt sell out. For a comapny to say something like "We met the needs of the people that wanted it most as well as leaving enough stock for any casual player" is a flawed statement. That means that they are taking a large gamble on the causal player coming to buy it.
The question is not will the C.P. (casual player) buy the system it is a question of when. So now instead of companies going crazy ordering more systems they are waiting for the systems in stock to sell so they can order more. Which means less money for Sony.
Meanwhile the 360 which has sold enough units in its 1 year of release does not need to worry about console says as much now its all the games ends.
(they do need to worry about consoles selling but they dont need to as bad anymore)
Meanwhile everytime a WII is put on the shelf it is sold. Which is also bad for Nintendo since people that are waiting around for a console can not get there hands on it so they may get tired of waiting and pick up through secondary markets (ebay) or just goto another system.
So as of right now the only one thats in an OK Spot is 360. But you read why.
Now in 1 year lets check in on the WII and Ps3 to see how they are sitting
Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 2:00PM
1ST person SHOOTER platformer.
And yes, the sidescroller are infinitely more excellent than the Prime Series, though they are pretty good. I beat prime1, skipped prime 2, as it just felt like more of the same, and I didn't really like how it controlled. I'm really looking forward to prime 3 though.
Thread=jacked.
Noshino @ Mar 27th 2007 2:02PM
@Crono
Did you finish reading what I said?
"they were decent on the gba, but all the other games sucked."
I played all the ones for gba, they were fun for a while, the ones for gamecube and DS sucked...worst fps experience I have ever had, sorry to disappoint you.
@Vidikron
"The side scrollers are 10x better, IMO"
In this case, for Metroid, yes. One of those series that was meant to stay as a sidescrolling, I'm not saying it will never be made on 3D, its just that all the attempts have failed horribly.
"And it invented the 1st person platformer genre on November 15, 2002."
Read what Vidikron said...sigh, see what I meant by uninformed fanboys?
Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 2:09PM
I'm very well informed. Your just jealous of my informedness. The transition of metroid to 3D wasn't perfect, but it was hella good. If you're a halo fan, you'd probably hate it, because its not a shooter at heart, its a platformer.
I don't need to read "again". I got it right the first time. You need to read what I said again, because your still an idiot.
Vidikron @ Mar 27th 2007 2:10PM
@17
But Jumping Flash IS a 1st person shooter platformer. Your viewpoint is 1st person from a mechanized robot bunny that jumps around on platforms and shoots stuff.
You sound sort of like me about the Cube Metroid games. I just didn't care for the controls so could never get into the games.
Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 2:13PM
Honestly, I've never heard of this game, so I'll call for a compromise. Sure, this other game might have invented it, but Metroid improved it, just like how everybody was argueing about how SMB wasn't the 1st sidecroller, even though it was the first one that mattered.
Digi Smalls @ Mar 27th 2007 2:15PM
of course these did well in UK.
Resistance, F1 and Motorstorm? come on, its like Sony *focused* on UK.
think Resistance was made for the Japanese audience? anyone in the US who loves games like Resistance already has an xbox.
the UK is the only place where this launch made any kind of sense.
.
Vidikron @ Mar 27th 2007 2:19PM
@21
Fair enough. I'm surprised you have never heard of Jumping Flash. It often comes up when people claim Super Mario 64 was the first 3D platformer... Jumping Flash beat it too. Though, as in this case, SM64 clearly set the standard, it just wasn't first. It's actually pretty good game. It was the first game I ever played that actually gave me a feeling of vertigo.
Saneless @ Mar 27th 2007 2:37PM
I'm so sick of Joystiq's anti-wii60 bias. All it ever has is Pro-sony news!
Kyle81 @ Mar 27th 2007 2:46PM
Seriously wtf, I like how fanboys like to think Resistance sucks. Game got great reviews all around and is a damn good first person shooter. It's not change the world FPS like Halo was back on original xbox, but its a damn fine good game.
Digi Smalls @ Mar 27th 2007 3:08PM
who's dissing Resistance? it's a solid game.
.
Kye @ Mar 27th 2007 3:09PM
@ Travis,
In general I'm a silly person.
Please forgive my post if it offended you. To be honest however, I am surprised that the PS3 is so easy to find. I did expect stronger sales, even with the high price.
With the 360 I would have been even more surprised to here that they were sold out due to high demand. This launch period belongs to the Wii and PS3 so I did not include the 360.
@ Gamey Mcgee
I do understand the principles of supply and demand. No expert I am, but I do understand it. I do not believe that there is an inadequacy with the "other" vendors. Methinks it be Sony with the demand inadequency. IMHO.
I am aware that where I live does not represent a large area of the gaming world at all. But it does represent mine. I could not agree more that the start of a long distance race does not decide the winner. But it is worth noting that the star runner seems to have caught a slight stitch just off the line.
Noshino @ Mar 27th 2007 3:18PM
"If you're a halo fan, you'd probably hate it, because its not a shooter at heart, its a platformer."
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think Halo is an overrated franchise.
"I don't need to read "again". I got it right the first time. You need to read what I said again, because your still an idiot."
err...Idiot for expressing my point of view about a game...?
The Prime series do suck, metroid price is as overrated as Killzone or Halo, but anyway...it makes no sense to keep fighting with you =/
Kye @ Mar 27th 2007 3:42PM
Andres put the point across so well.
Im a Ninty fan, Xbox is good, and I distrust Sony for their many lies, and less reliability issues. But Im fair and I give credit where its due (despite the odd occasional fanboy-esque rant)
XBox live is great.
PS3 graphics are great.
Wii control mode is great.
But right now Sony aint dancing too hot.
That's all I'm saying.
P.s. I've never heard of Jumping Flash either 8-/

Crono @ Mar 27th 2007 3:56PM
*enters fanboy pissing contest mode*
Prime series is the best console FPS/Platformer in existence. To say it sucks shows not an opinion, but a warped perception of reality.
Sorry, I'm feeling fanboyish today.
Grindstone @ Mar 27th 2007 4:51PM
I wonder if there is any game we could all agree upon that is not "overrated"? Obviously the numbers don't lie; the Halo franchise is a money maker and the Metriod series is a money maker. You can argue which you think is overrated, but again, those damn numbers tell us differently.
I think this thread was already summed up quite nicely; these were the best games offered on the PS3, so obviously they would be doing well right about now.
