@ 50 Korova

My god he must be old to be one of the origins of the English language ;). I always thought that it slowly evolved from the combination of many different immigrant groups absorbing together with the locals of a tiny island in Western Europe. Then it was spread out over the world with the British Empire and then the USA. I guess I was wrong.

I'm sorry I couldn't resist it.

"So let's look at average salaries in the US compared to the UK, and you'll see numbers like $40k/yr US and $30k/yr UK. Throw in a 17% tax on EVERYTHING in the UK, and that really puts it into perspective."

Figures that you're talking about ($41,399 and $30,436 respectively for the US and UK) are already adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity, which includes taxes and other aspects that make living in the UK more expensive than living in the US. It means that the average person in the UK can spend $11,000 less a year in terms of what that money would buy in america than the average american.

It's not being cheap. it's being realistic. So it's not cheap when americans gobble up your HDTV's, sound sytems, and computers but when we don't buy your ps3 were cheap. It's not that were cheap it's that your product sucks just what the ipod did to the walkman. the wii and 360 are doing to your brilliant ps3.

Point is some Europeans and Americans felt insulted and feel the price is too high in any country.

Following that logic, us brazilians must be the richest people in the world because here PS3 = US$1500, Wii = US$1150 and X360 = US$1400

Oregon minimum wage: $7.80
Very few states have the $5.15 amount as "minimum".

Sony would be better served with silence, as they never quite seem to say the right things.

I'm in the same boat as Jake; I grew up on "timber dollars" and that industry is fickle depending upon how active the liberals are, and the time of year (fire/snow season). Anyway, long story short, after a couple of BA degrees, I am closer to the American dream through persistance and hard work.

I'm confused... how do the cost of land and labor significantly affect the cost of a product that's manufactured in Asia and shipped to retailers? VAT's also irrelevant since you can compare base console prices.

Also, UK citizens don't earn money in US dollars. So whether or not their currency is more expensive is irrelevant to how rich or poor they are...

Didn't studies show that Americans work more hours per day than most other countries? It's not that American's are lazy (althoug some are), American's are overworked and underpaid- spending on lavishes that our not within our means get caught up in the EVILS of the credit industry. Big coporations like Enron and the Auto industry raping the working man. Sad really, am I the only person for universal health care?

Guys, I know what you're getting at, but I don't know that average purchasing power is what we should be looking at.

The median purchasing power seems a bit more apt in the case of these two countries, as I would guess that the U.S. has a lot more of the super-super-upper class than does the U.K. That can easily cause an average to lean to the higher end.

The U.S. may very well still have overall higher purchasing power, but I would wager that it won't be such a large difference.

The minimum wage in Japan is ¥673 ($5.73), so I guess the Sony UK managing director thinks that Japan is another "well populated but poor country"

Clear case of foot-in-mouth disease.
