#1 - I thought the same thing.

I think the price on the Elite stinks (should be $400 with the Premium dropping down to $300) but these "conditions" really aren't that big of a deal IMHO.

None of this sounds surprising whatsoever, and all of it makes perfect sense. In plans to swap out your 20 for the 120, you dump your info from the old to the new, and leave it at that.

if people have two 20 GB 360's odds are that each would have purchased or downloaded his or her chosen content to begin with, and 'transferring' that info from one 20 to another is piracy I'd have to believe..isn't it? Two accounts for Live, two Microsoft Points accounts..things like that. Nobody gets stuff for free!

One thing is for sure: come this Holiday season if you've purchased a Core console, be looking for a cheap used 20GB HDD to upgrade from your memory units!

(In a way, this whole Elite BS may perhaps put more 360's with HDs in homes than ever before.)

this is crap. I'm not buying this crap, then I'll have a 20GB PAPER WEIGHT. MS is giving people the screw job. It would be nice to be able to use one as a external HD and make it so you have 140 GB with both. Thats alot of money to have a damn paper weight for a HD.

I have a question: when I had to return my 360 for repair, I got a different one back and now my profile is the only one that can play the games I've purchased in full mode. Is there any workaround for this?

Im passing on both this and the Elite xbox. 180 bucks for 120GB Harddrive whose only use is to store Xbox Live arcade games, Movies I BUY off Live and demos that I download before I Buy more games. I think MS should have taken a hit or something on the HD since its only use it to have more space to buy more Live stuff.

Pass for me

Yes. Complain to customer service, and they will give you enough MS points to re-buy all of your stuff.

meh, no big deal. i have no need for 120Gb. when the price of the 20Gb drops or when people go to trade theirs in, i'll pick it up on the cheap. use one for xbl arcade games and demos and one for game saves and trailers. 120 is only gonna be good for tv shows and movies, of which i have no need for.

@ Drdre74,

Believe it or not you could trade it in or you could sell it on eBay for cash money. If you get stuck with a 20gb paper weight, then it's your own fault.

i agree with Toph. these restrictions make sense.

in terms of end user complexity, having the ability to transfer from a 120gb to a 20gb would be hell with users being asked to specify which files to copy and which ones not to with error messages saying there isn't enough space. and then trying to merge multiple hard drives into a single one would have all these questions of overwrite and priority.

i guess it does suck if you have a lot of content split between two 20gb hard drives (for example, in the case of someone who's actively using video marketplace) but at least you're able to redownload it again (hassle? yes. end of the world? no) since it's linked to the gamertag.

I was ready to take a small $$ hit and sell my current 360 setup and get this one.. But after finding out it doesn't have the newer & smaller CPU nor Quieter DVD drive, I think I'm going to have to pass on it. I could just buy the 120GB HDD and spend a few bucks on a black skin for it.

I would guess that MS will say that the restrictions are necessary to prevent friends from sharing bootleg copies of video marketplace files. Plus, I think that Panello already said MS needs to have a "closed system" so that content providers will be willing to put stuff on marketplace. I haven't decided whether I think that's B.S. just yet.

If you're going to upgrade drives, sell the 20GB one and get the 120GB as soon as it launches. You'll get a better price on ebay the quicker you do it.

As for drive copying, it makes sense. All sorts of shenanigans could happen if your data starts getting replicated all over the place.

It's also a good use of the modular way in which the 360 was constructed. Another one is rumors of a Blu-Ray add on drive. It's good to be able to upgrade like this.

@11 - But after finding out it doesn't have the newer & smaller CPU nor Quieter DVD drive

Yeah, that's lame. I'd happily trade for a quieter DVD drive in a heartbeat.

The reason that for consoles is to CONTROL how things work on them. Hacking/Modding/Cheating is not only unethical but we agree not to do it. I get sick of hearing about ways around thing. Of course Microsoft is in business to make money so they are protecting rightfully so there intellectual property.

Hopefully they have the sense to not make the other 20mb a paperweight.

The absolute worst of these is that it overwrites the 120. The press release stated it will come preloaded with content. WTF is the point of that when you'll have to overwrite it pretty much as soon as you open the box? WTG MS... Not to mention $180 is simply too much money. It should have been $150, at most. I really want a larger hard drive, but I'm seriously reconsidering that after the price point reveal. Bad move all around. Not to mention that this should have been released 5 months ago when video marketplace first went live. I guess they didn't have much confidence in their own product...

agreed with #6, way to expensive to store stuff you are buying from marketplace anyways. Make the drive a lot cheaper, then we'd be encouraged to pay for content to fill it up. I'll pass, 20gb has been fine for me so far.

Let me see, spend 180 bux for a hard drive I can basically only fill with Live content that again, I have to pay for. Im not paying 5 bux or whatever it is for a movie or a stupid TV show I can watch when it airs on tv, TIVO it, or just watch or download it online for free. As for movies go, its cheaper to go to a video store or use Netflix. So no, you can shove that over priced HD up your ass. I would consider it if it was drastically reduced in price.

And as far as the non-"Elite" 360 goes.....I wont even get started on that right now. Im in a decent mood and dont want to get all riled up.

Anyhow, who else is looking into a PS3? Ill still use my 360 for Gears and Halo 3 and such, but the PS3 is starting to look much better. Sony it turns out has been smarter than MS so far, especially with recent news. Congrats to Sony and the PS3! This along with the Europe sales may have just been the turn of the tide. You are on your way to winning the Next Gen war. Though I have to say, I think MS is pretty much waving the white flag by these recent stupid moves and just giving you the win.

Jesus H Christ, do none of you morons have any common sense? Why would you care if it overwrites the 120GB drive? There's nothing on the damn thing you couldn't have already gotten of XBL Marketplace, did you not watch the Channel 10 video? You don't need to answer that because its obvious.

Also, when you are crying like a little bitch because your friend sneakily transferred your arcade games to his system and you are now banned from XBL for illegally duplicating them, you'd understand why MS is preventing that capability in the first place.

Finally, I don't know what the F you dumbasses are hoarding on your HDD's to need a 120GB drive in the first place. I download many HD rental movies.. you know what I do when I'm done watching them? I delete them! Guess what I do when I'm done playing a demo? I DELETE IT! The arcade games, save games, and most downloadable game content doesn't take up all that much space.. Some of you kids don't know how to do anything except bitch, no matter what.

I can't believe you guys! How can you possibly get mad about this?!?! Who the heck buys two 20 gig HDD's???? NO one! Of course your not going to keep your old HDD after you get 120 gig, how would that make any sense at all??? Your going to trade it in. Im upset that XFB would even put this article up...Haven't you guys ruffled these complaining fools feathers enough for one day? This is complete knitpicking. Can we please find something decent to complain about? I forget sometimes that you can download everything you delete off your hard drive as long as your still logged in as your gamertag. Because ya know, I got 3 different Gamertags and 12 HDD's and im mad now because MS if really stickin' it to me. What with all the "Giving me more disk space" like i've been complaining about since the system launched. GIVE IT A BREAK!

While I won't argue that the price of the 120 drive totally sucks, I'm not really sure what the hub-bub is about only being able to transfer your data once.

How many times do you need to transfer it? Once you've upgraded to the 120, why would you possibly need or want to downgrade back to the 20? Seems like it's much ado about nothing.

To 20 and 21:
I agree this is expensive, but you don't have to buy it. Unlike Sony making you pay for blu-ray to get a PS3. Also movie studios require a protected hard drive for downloading movies. IMHO, that's the main reason it is so expensive. You can switch out the hard drive on the PS3, thus most movie studios will not allow movies to be downloaded on the PS3. http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/03/28/xbox-live-adds-hdtv-content-from-paramount-warner-and-more/

What's the big deal with that?

I doubt many people have more than 1 20gb hard disk, and it makes sense because of profiles, gamerpoints etc.

If the 120gb hard disk isn't to expensive, I probably will at some point transfer over to 120gb - but only if I can actually make use of the extra space. We Europeans don't even have Video Marketplace yet!

What if your transfer goes belly-up. You just had everything on your 20Gb wiped, and your 120Gb is blank/corrupt. You should still be able to use your 20Gb with all its content, then I would put up with only being able to transfer once, it should be 1 transfer from a 20Gb, rather than delete its content.

This was an obvious solution to anyone who had spent the time thinking about it.

Microsoft allows you to download copyright drm protected content to your hard drive only, a restriction made by content providers. Microsoft could easily allow any content to be placed onto a usb device. They don't have to 'man up' or 'grow a pair'. To provide the content people are asking for (tv, movies, etc) they have to get the content.

If you want to get a larger hard-drive, then they have to give the content providers reassurance that you will not be able to duplicate the content. Thus the one shot data transfer.

Any legally purchased content can be re-downloaded from Marketplace with the account you originally purchased it with.

If you want the content, you have to abide by the licensing, regardless of how much you disagree with it (as I do).

What is interesting to me is to see if Microsoft continues to increase its marketshare of high-def content sales it may end up putting them in a better bargaining position.

No one said you had to buy the new system. If you're happy with your 20, just stay with it.

I don't need the 120, so I'm gunna stick with the 20. It looks really cool, all black and everything, but it isn't worth the price.

And #20, at least MS has their stuff in line. I played the PS3 at Best Buy for less than half an hour and it over-heated on me...twice. I'd say the Xbox is the best nex-gen system out there.
