Bitter competitors since the 16-bit era, Mario and Sonic are finally burying the hatchet and starring in a game together: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Characters from both franchises battle it out in Olympic-style games such as swimming, the 100 meter dash, and table tennis. The worldwide launch is this holiday season, so prepare to finally discover who's faster -- Mario or Sonic.
If this were 1992, we'd think it was an early April Fools prank.

Great...one washed up video game character racing his way to irrelevance with another washed up video game character.

its on the nintendo europe site as well im interested to see how theyll balance this come characters would be much better at some events like sonic running as people have said, but yoshi would easily win the long jump, luigi the high jump, donkey kong would have a massive advantage in boxing

Hold on, this includes characters from both franchises. In that case, you can't count out Donkey Kong for most of the strength contests. On the same note, Bowser and Eggman would have a good shot of getting some awards if they don't get caught cheating.

I said it on another site and I'll say it here: I wanna whup Knuckles' ass in boxing with Princess Peach.
Another great game would be if they combined Mario Kart with Sonic Racers (I don't think there actually is a Sonic foot racing game, though, is there?). It'd basically be the Mario cast chasing the Sonic cast around in Go Karts, shooting stuff at them, but damn would it be funny.

if any of you have seen the sonic anime movie you'd rethink everything you've said about mario winning anything. ;o

@50: Um, Luigi would be gold metal in the high jump if his SMB2 had anything to say about it.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, wow, now this is a cool announcement. The fact that it's actually happening is really exciting. It just goes to show how anything is possible in this industry. I hope that Sega and Nintendo deliver a solid game and that we see some footage of it soon.

Take one character who hasn't done anything good in years, and another who hasn't ever done anything good, and put them in a situation that has nothing to do with their strengths! Hilarity ensues!
Wait, am I talking about Mario/Sonic Olympics or Rush Hour 3???

@ Xenikos
who do you mean, either character (depending on how you view the games) could fit either description
and lol at the Rush Hour 3 reference
But THIS, this looks awesome, and the Wii Sports crowd will love this, the Sonic fans will love this, and the mario fans will eat this alive
and fans of both (like me) will simply die with anticipation
Unless the game COMPLETELY sucks (somewhere on the level of Fry Cry Vengeance), i will buy this

So, we're all having a nice cold drink, discussing the finer points of a mario and Sonic game, and here comes jack. "spyro, Crash Bandicoot!"
Crazy git.
And if you think that tails can beat Luigi, Toad and peach then your really having a laugh.
p.s. @ samfish #16. Superman wins in every single way.

The only thing I can say is "Why Is This Not Smash Bros?"
also....wouldn't the track events be a lttle one-sided?

Mr Kahn -
I meant Mario as someone who hasn't done anything good since SMB64, and I've never understood one iota of the interest in Sonic.

New Super Mario Bros. was awesome.
Sonic 2 was awesome.
So you were obviously talking about Rush Hour 3.

Mario wins standing long jump, Sonic wins running long jump. Mario wins any other jumping events, and all water events. Sonic wins anything that has to do with speed.
Either that or they dumb down Sonic's abilities.

Gymnastics between Mario and Sonic would be damn close. Sonic swings on bars in a lot of games, both but more so Sonic do flips and stuff in the air which would work well for the vault. Not to mention Sonic can also run on water if he wants to cheat, a la his best game, Sonic 3. Can't wait til that comes out in VC.

This can be interesting! If Sega has the rights to use the Olympics Mascots, throw 5 of them in as big bosses (in story mode) and try to unlock them! For more information check
