Final Fight and Street Fighter II Turbo coming to Virtual Console

The SNES edition of Final Fight, while technically impressive for its time, goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to killing the magic. Not only did Final Fight on the SNES drop the two-player action that made it a hit in the first place, but also the red-clothed karate champ, Guy. Sure, you're playing it for Haggar anyways, but do you really want to be stuck with Cody? You also get a dose of censorship as everyone's favorite video game transsexual, Poison, is nowhere to be found.
Street Fighter II Turbo (or Hyper Fighting as us humans call it) isn't that bad, but smaller sprites, a lack of online play and limited controller options on the Wii make it a hard sell. We love us some Zangief, but we don't see us pulling off our favorite combos on the classic controller.

We've seen a Bizarro World-esque shift with the XBL Arcade and Virtual Console since Zelda OoT came out. XBL Arcade had a fantastic March, while the VC has been really lackluster, with this being the icing on the cake. Releasing an updated version of SFII this close to them releasing the original is especailly insulting.
Oh, and the SNES version of Final Fight is an abomination and a disgrace to the gaming community. No, humanity at large.
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ Mar 29th 2007 4:37PM
I am so freaking glad that there is finally a 300 reference on Joystiq. Keep 'em coming.
IslandLife @ Mar 29th 2007 4:38PM

BRAVO! Joystiq BRAVO!
I needed that 'cause 5pm must be on strike in this office.
Paul Gale @ Mar 29th 2007 4:39PM
Ha, nice gif Joystiq. I'm glad that others see the relationship that Zangief has with 300. Clever stuff. And as for Final Fight and Street Fighter II Turbo coming to Wii's Virtual Console, that's great for the fans.
JodyAnthony @ Mar 29th 2007 4:39PM
I demand Final Fight Guy
wait in the car @ Mar 29th 2007 4:42PM
If you own a PS2, go out and buy the Capcom Classics Collection instead.
Arcade versions of SFII Standard & Hyper, Final Fight, Ghosts & Goblins, Ghouls & Ghosts, & Super Ghouls & Ghosts. Many others too, but these are the cream of the crop.
Rubang B @ Mar 29th 2007 4:43PM
Even though they're both gimped from the arcade versions, I think the Classic Controller can efficiently emulate the SNES controls.
Rubang B @ Mar 29th 2007 4:47PM
Good call wait in the car. I also highly recommend Sonic Mega Collection, as it has Sonic 1, Sonic Spinball, Ristar, and the Mean Bean Machine, which are $8 each right now on the VC, but you can get the whole collection for $13 used now. It also has Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and some other junk.

300 was a horrible film, terribly unrealistic, I demand my time and money back!!!

Am I the only person in the world who broke out their Hori digital pad for VC SNES games?
generaldane @ Mar 29th 2007 5:00PM

I LOL´D, nice one :)
thispaceforsale @ Mar 29th 2007 5:04PM
The more the merrier, but I wish Capcom would release some games that are not as widely available already:
x-men children of the atom, breath of fire, knights of the round, xmen mutant apocalypse, marvel superheroes war of the gems, nightstalkers, xmen vs marvel vs capcom vs streetfighter, to name a few
mastafool @ Mar 29th 2007 5:05PM
I never understood why capcom left Guy out of the Final Fight version on the SNES.
comtar @ Mar 29th 2007 5:28PM
@thispaceforsale
Capcom lost all rights to Marvel, those games you mentioned are now into the abyss of copyright hell. Where they will burn for etenity and never be seen again.
hvnlysoldr @ Mar 29th 2007 5:11PM
OH! MY CAR
Nate @ Mar 29th 2007 5:11PM
"300 was a horrible film, terribly unrealistic, I demand my time and money back!!!"
Like OMG, Lord Of The Rings was so unrealistic! I mean, that Goalie guy, he wasn't even human, there's no such thing as those. And the talking trees....so not real! Like totally!
I mean seriously, what gave away the fact that 300 wasn't real? The hunchback guy? The goat head dude that was sitting on the throne in Xerxes castle? The monster that the Persian army used? Or was it the CGI werewolf with the glowing eyes?
Steve @ Mar 29th 2007 6:30PM
I never understood why Capcom made so many versions of the Street Fighter franchise but stayed with the Part 2 instead of moving on with Part 3, Part 4 etc. That's what all those versions were anyway.
I remember playing one of these SNES versions at college years and years ago. My neighbor was a great Street Figher player but I could beat him by doing continuous footsweeps. It was fun to make my guy (Ryu? Ken? I forget) throw a blue puff and shout "Hoe-oooh-sh*t!" but cheap winning was even more rewarding. He used to get so mad!
Striderhayasa @ Mar 29th 2007 5:12PM
that animated gif is hilarious.
polly @ Mar 29th 2007 5:13PM
Ya man, I hate comic book turned movie adaptations that aren't realistic too.
Persian please...
gregory mitchell @ Mar 29th 2007 5:13PM
Damn no online play......As a Wii60 owner. This is starting to get annoying.
samfish @ Mar 29th 2007 5:18PM
Why don't they just release the arcade versions?
It's not like it can be THAT much bigger than the SNES version, right?
Also, the Classic Controller needs a redesign to look more like the 6 button Saturn controller ASAP!
Davs @ Mar 29th 2007 6:51PM
This is why I'm glad I still have my trusty Saturn. I've been enjoying arcade-perfect versions of the entire Street Fighter 2 series for nearly 10 years! Anyway, let's make with the Neo Geo games on the VC, already!
Phil @ Mar 29th 2007 5:23PM
I'll agree with Final Fight being gimped and ignored, but SF2 Turbo is a worthy edition of the VC library, they should have skipped the original and just went with Turbo. I think the classic controller would do fine with SF2 Turbo, especially since it's basically the SNES controller with analog sticks. However, I'd wait until Super SF2, it'll be coming.
waLLy @ Mar 29th 2007 5:24PM
I'm more miffed that I already downloaded the original SFII from the VC last month.....
Staggs @ Mar 29th 2007 5:25PM
+10 Godliness for the pic.
Joshua @ Mar 29th 2007 5:29PM
But didn't another Street Fighter JUST come out on VC?
And how is Poison a transsexual?
LaughingTarget @ Mar 29th 2007 5:34PM
Street Fighter came out on XBLA.
Miles @ Mar 29th 2007 5:45PM
@12
Besides Activision having the rights to Marvel right now, none of those "Vs" games came out on a Nintendo system. Which is exactly why the lame ass SNES versions of Final Fight and Street Fighter are coming to the VC. What Capcom/Nintendo should do is put the Sega CD version of Final Fight on VC, so they could include Guy.
@14
Don't forgot the massive tear that came out of his eyes after you wrecked that guys car.
mrfong @ Mar 30th 2007 2:53AM
If anyone thinks that gif is funny, you need to go to ytmnd.com now.
deaftly @ Mar 29th 2007 5:52PM
ill stick to the xblive arcade sf2
trent @ Mar 29th 2007 7:31PM
indeed that gif made me LOL for reals.

Miles @ Mar 29th 2007 6:09PM
"Oh, and the SNES version of Final Fight is an abomination and a disgrace to the gaming community. No, humanity at large."
I was so addicted to the game after getting shafted with that hunk of shit, I went out and got the Sega CD version.
Evorgleb @ Mar 30th 2007 1:29PM
I'm a huge Street Fighter fan. So i'll be scooping up Hyper Fighter just as I will Super SFII when that comes out. As for the classic controller not being good for combos? Whats better? I gotta admit the playstastion is nice with the extra shoulder buttons that you can map the 3x punch and kck to but the d-pad sucked. I'm pretty happy with how the classic controller feels. I wish it had more weight though.
Rubang B @ Mar 29th 2007 6:28PM
Poison is post-op in the same way Birdo is.
And you can dislike 300 for being unrealistic because it, unlike Lord of the Rings, is based on things that really happened. Very very loosely based. I mean, a Spartan making fun of Athens for having sex with boys? Who were they kidding? That was rampant all over Greece at the time. You know all 300 of those dudes had boinked each other's sons and nephews after training sessions.
Yourself @ Mar 29th 2007 7:34PM
I'm more than a little displeased now, as I already bought SFII. It's a nice trick by Capcom, but still gay. And I won't be buying Turbo, because the second I do... "Hey guys, guess how lucky you are! We're releasing Super Street Fighter II next month!!!"
Mephistopheles @ Mar 29th 2007 7:49PM
I didn't like the 300. Men dying from spears? Please, everyone knows they were all strapped with nines back then.
Anonymous @ Mar 29th 2007 7:58PM
@13
I remember something about Guy being removed because of the cart size at the time (animations, character art). Apparently they even altered a whole stage from the arcade version for the same reason. He was my favorite character in the game too so I was really dissapointed when it came out on the SNES and I worked at Nintendo at the time so I had to act all excited about it.
So I wonder if there will be a a Guy version on the VC also? :)
[From Wikipedia.org]
Final Fight Guy
A second SNES version of the game, titled Final Fight Guy, was released on March 20, 1992 in Japan. This version remained a Japanese-only release for a while until June 1994, in which Capcom released it in North America as a rental-only release. As the title implies, Capcom addressed one of the more common complaints of the first version by bringing back Guy as a playable character. However, they did so by removing Cody from the game.
Antonio @ Mar 29th 2007 8:41PM
LOL, they dropped Cody in Final Fight Guy? What a joke.
Yeah, the VC games need to go to a case-by-case basis for arcade releases. I'm happy to play the home version of Contra, but I want arcade-perfect ports of Final Fight and SFII Turbo.
Eric @ Mar 30th 2007 12:11AM
Animated Gifs on Joystiq? Tisk Tisk... I'd stop coming here if I wasnt so damn bored all the time.
exhaulted @ Mar 30th 2007 4:26AM
Well i'd get excited about this if i could actually play NES, SNES and Megadrive games on my virtual console at a decent frame rate. As it is i have a bunch of games that are pretty much unplayable and the support centre isn't even emailing me back :-(
daddycool @ Mar 30th 2007 3:10PM
Yaaaawwwn. I have an Original Xbox, I've been playing these games in the console and arcade versions for years.
