"Graphically speaking, the lighting and character models look light years ahead of any previous GTA title"

but GTA is notorious for bad character models.

This does look so much better than any prior GTA game. I just hope the story and gameplay are as good as the graphics.

It's Liberty City, not NYC.

The boat says LIBERTY CITY and in the "Times Square" area it has an ad for the LIBERTY TREE. There's no way both places would exist, they're basically identical.

Looks pretty damn good. We'll just have to wait and see if it stays this good, but at least the GTA series has been using in-game footage as cutscenes for a while now.

Lots of advertisements in the game. is that "spending money makes you happy" on the street tickers sprunk soda? e cola? weapons x movie? whats the "I had your mom" movie "I slept with your mom" I think is the name of it.
the 6 slices of beef burger from burger shot? cluckin bell. was that a starbucks atm? bean machine? maybe I just read it wrong. I wonder what the activities are? the roller coaster looks interesting.

Ok, first of all, whats with the choppy motion? Secondly, the grahics are barely on a par with Saints Row. Pretty sad when its had almost a year more development time, probably more when you consider its such an old franchise. Lastly, I'm not too keen on playing as some Albanian thug.

I was anxious for the game, now after the trailer I'm histerically desperated to know more!!!

Damn this is fine for a GTA game and the immigrant PC is too good to be true in the way it's gonna annoy the hell outta the retarded right wing extremists like Thompson and retarded vigilantism lovers!

GTA IV is gonna be FUN and not only to play but to see the extremist right wing go NUTS on it! LOL

I LOVE YOU ROCKSTAR!!!

Killroy: It's on-par with Saint's Row now, and they still have until October to polish it. I'm pretty sure even if the graphics stay at this level, though, I'll be happy, I mean we're talking a HUGE city to go through, and GTA's always have a way of being time-consumingly fun.

Ummm...

Am I the only one who wanted this to be more like Vice City, and less like San Andreas?

I dont like games set in dark and grim locations.....thats why I liked Vice City (and Crackdown), cos they were nice and bright!

Oh well, still gonna be good by the looks of it! ;)

@14 how is this anything like san andreas, its set in a central city, not a sprawling urban countryside and you're not a gangster. this is like the opposite of san andreas, going back to the GTA III roots, woot!

There was one thing that kinda worried me, the same thing that's bothered me since the rumors began of IV being set in NYC. It's not really enough to throw in landmarks - the Flatiron building, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge. They have to be given some sense of scale and scope. That's what makes New York interesting. I hope that, when you're in-game, standing at street level, you are blown away by how large the game is. I really hope they got that right. From the low number of pedestrians on the street in "Times Square," though, it looks like I might be disappointed by my hopes for that kind of scale.

it was short, yes. and it was choppy, yes. but who cares?

the two most important questions have been answered (kinda); where and who.

i don't mind it being in new york one bit. it is slightly cliched, but you can't ask for a much more diverse area, real or fake. its going to have everything and its going to be enormous. just think about the possibilities for gangs.

and the main guy is eastern european or something like that. that was a curveball i don't think anyone saw coming, and needless to say, i think its brilliant.

wow am i pumped. i'm sure i'm not the only person that has already reserved this game.

I love the Koyaanisqatsi throwback, and I like how Rockstar North is seemingly distancing themselves from the typical "mafia" or "gangster" cliches this time around.

To #9: The choppy motion was there because that part was done like a timelapse movie, to show the sun moving throughout a day. The music was from Koyaanisqatsi, a movie known and loved for it's timelapse sequences. Also, the first thing the narrator says is "Life", which is what koyaanisqatsi means.

On topic, the game looks awesome!

I disagree cause not only was there the statue of liberty but also the Empire State Building, Chrysler building, the roller coaster I'm assuming was the cyclone in coney island, there was time square, the 'get-a-life' building which is the metlife building, I could keep on going naming the things I recognized, the staten island ferry terminal, the subways look the same, the flat iron building, that stock ticker, the queensboro bridge, the brooklyn bridge, those docks where the boat platypus is docked are real. It is most definately new york city.

I'm actually pretty excited that it's new york, i grew up there and now I live in LA so it'll be nice to play a game and be able to know where I am already and tell people I've been to those places.

san andreas had more then a few recognizable features of LA and Vegas. it had the strip, mulholland drive, the hollywood sign was there wasn't it (but something different)? and i've been reading all over the place that in the video you can see little details that say liberty city. i haven't look at the trailer close enough, but it seems pretty right.

You play a Russian immigrant? Awesome! The game looks pretty as hell too. Love those road textures during the part where the car is driving past those Victorian homes.

And the part next to the amusement park shows some great potential for this game, visually.

Hey #9....

dumb dumb dumb dumb... first off... it was probably choppy because you didn't let the moview load all the way in your browser before it began playing... that will give the video a choppy playback... try pausing it until the video had loaded...
The character models are way better than saintsrow... the details on the characters faces....
And we're assuming that the game forces you to play as this one character... who knows... maybe the game lets you choose where your character is from... and thusly... which gangs he will interact with...
The level of detail in the city is great... it looks like it will be a big hit for the big white box

i think that it should be in liberty city, but it would be hard to convince the players if they're surrounded by nyc icons.

but, really, it doesn't change anything much. only they'll be scolded if they screw up the feel of nyc.

I deff agree with Ashley, I loved vice city and wasn't too fond of San Andreas but it was still a great game I just liked the feel of vicy city more, the bright city and the feel of the 80's. Vice city is in my top 3 of all time, if not #1. Wish they would have done something like it but theres always next time.

Some of u guys are on crack. The racial thing is just ridiculous. The graphics thing as well; its GRAND THEFT! It never has been a game for graphics whores. It doesn't have to be the best looking game, but you can count on it rocking regardless. As far as VC vs. SA, it doesn't much matter. You can count on a gritty storyline that keeps you playing for hours. Its gonna be tight. Damn Gears of War, and all of the stupid "Elite" shit of late. The king is back...

Okay, I watched it at work earlier, without sound and was blown away then... the Philip Glass track made it 100x better!

Much respect to Rockstar; someone there's pretty cultured. I don't think I ever expected to hear Philip Glass in anything game-related, and it works beautifully.

Idunno, I might be biased because I'm Irish and from Boston, but was anyone else remotely hoping to play as an Irish thug? It's a world that has barely ever been scratched, aside from recently the Departed and the Black Donnelleys, but for anyone that has any idea about it, the stories are endless, including tales from fellas like Whitey Bulger and Jimmy Coonan. Idunno, let me know what you guys think, because honestly, playing some Russian doesnt really fire me up that much.

You obviously have never spent any time in the former Soviet Union. The Russian Mafia is very real and extremely dangerous. They pretty much run Russia and Ukraine.

BTW the trailer is now available for download from XBLM.

A few things have me optimistic: I live in NYC ("Liberty City" as it says in some of the signs in the trailer's Times Square) and none of these sandbox games influenced by the GTA series have ever been able to match what Rockstar has created in terms of depth and playability, the only thing lacking was 'the graphics.' They have always had FUN gameplay, with some wild *isht* to do with cars, boats, guns, etc.

With all these things adding up, I'm excited about this.

...And if they add an amazing multiplayer, co-op, whatever? "OMG pwnage" as the kids typezorz.

And about the "choppy..." Well Roy beat me to the punch but it's the Phillip Glass music from the 1988 film 'Koyaanisqatsi' and the first half of this trailer looks like it was created to look exactly like that film's timelapse scenes in major cities like NYC and Los Angeles. I always liked the way these GTA games have the cycle of the day and the weather. Just a phenomenal series.

Can I quote Tank, paraphrased for GTA IV? "I'm fairly excited to see what you're capable of ...it's a very exciting time."

This isn't New York City... did you notice all the spoof stuff... GetaLife instead of MetLife for example. Just because it has a faux-statue-of-liberty, doesn't mean it is New York. I'm 99.9% certain it is Liberty City, just with a more modern look.
