"If women are as good as men at driving, why isn't there an equal amount of men and women in auto racing?" by AirIntake

Gee, we could ask the very same question about Basketball or virtually any other sport in existance, yet women's sports is increasing in popularity.

The reason why we don't see more professional women drivers is myth, simple as that. We think women shouldn't be basketball players, drivers, or whatever else, so they are subject to prejudice if they decide they wish to pursue one of those professions. And naturally, women know this so most women would prefer to land a job where they're not being tormented. Furthermore, because we all believe the myth, women are raised by both their myth-believing father AND myth-believing mother that certain things aren't 'ladylike.' Therefore women grow up thinking that it's not proper. It's all cultural.

The proof of this is simply that there ARE profession female basketball players and drivers. If there was some severe biological impediment preventing women from driving professionally, NO woman would be capable of doing it. But there are.

Think about it. There are no mentally retarded professional drivers are there? They DO have biological impediments, women do not. Science has studied this both ways and come up with conflicting evidence, so, as I previously stated, this argument is pointless and based entirely on prejudice.

Bad, as in can't handle a car. Not Bad as in dangerous. Get it straight. Guys go fast because they can handle cars. Girls go slow because they can't.

Um, Brad Lee, you're kind of comparing different things. There AREN'T any women in the NBA. They have to compete in the WNBA, which is not the same thing. The last time I checked the NBA was NOT the MNBA, so I'm sure if a women could compete in the NBA, she would be allowed to do so, but so far, this has not happened. Same with every other professional sport. However in these sports, it is not women's skill holding them back, it is purely their lack of physical strength.

Auto racing is completely different. One does not require physical strength to drive a race car. Being stronger it of no advantage, it is all about skill.

So, the question is, are there virtually no women in auto racing because they just aren't interested, or is it because they don't have the skill? I lean towards lack of skill, but you could argue it either way or a bit of both I guess.

this is seriously the stupidest article I have ever read on joystiq and that's saying something. this does nothing but further stereotypes, doesn't come to any conclusions, logical or otherwise, and is based on nothing but speculation and half assed writing. It lacks nuance, understanding and is nothing but a rant dressed up an article.

it should never have been posted. Have more respect in what you publish.

Well, women are considered "awful" drivers because they're supposedly more likely to be over-cautious. I don't know about that, but I'd definitely agree over-cautiousness is what causes accidents on the road.

Racing games are a whole 'nother animal, though! Sure, they're reckless, screeching crash-fests. But the idea in a racing game-- ideally-- is to win and to look cool doing it. Racing games are men's games because generally, males enjoy video games for the same reason anyone does. They wanna play in a world where they're an idealized version of themselves. They can be the super cool hot rod circuit champion they wish they were when they're stuck behind some lady's SUV on the way to their crummy real-life job. Even if a guy stinks at the racing game, he can still live in the fantasy.

I think women play for a slightly different type of escapism. While men play to foster a fantasy self, women love the opportunity to break all the rules that nice girls aren't allowed to break in modern society-- in fact, as with smashing cars, having fistfights and things like that, social rulebreaking is actually the object of the game.

So put a guy in front of a racing game and he's gonna cruise at breakneck speeds while thinking he's The Man. A girl will laugh while driving the car the wrong way down the track and attempting to run over the lap card girl. I own hardly any racing games, because you can't win by trying to drive into the stands. You can only win by playing it the boys' way.

perfect
Mine girl does all that :(
but you also forgot one other thing (which my girls sister does)

-fail to read posted signs (ie. no U turn)

she then got Tboned and landed in the hospital for 1 week and bitched the next few months about how the accident wasn't her fault when she crossed 2 lanes to actually make the Uturn

Data suggests there isn't much of a difference between genders. Male drivers tend to put more miles than women, thus the perception that men are more likely to be involved in accidents. When comparing accidents per driven mile, men and women of all ages are about equal. The number of male traffic fatalities has declined by 11% since 1970 and the number of women traffic fatalities has increased by 14%, but this is purely due to changes in driving habits as females are starting to take up more road time. Other statistics, such as aggression, road rage and other compulsive attitudes are roughly equal with men edging out women in compulsion and risky behaviors and women edging out men in aggression and road rage.

Net effect - there isn't a gender difference, so stop pretending there is.

Haha, sorry but your article is a little out of touch.

People say men are good drivers because they have the natural ability to rapidly see things around them, make quick descisions, and see the consequences of their actions before they happen (e.g. physical skills evolved from men as hunters and gatherers). Women in general have different skills honed more advanced then mens (e.g. Women can physically hear more distictly and at a greater range of frequency than men - women also have more rods and cones in their eyes and consequently see more distinctly and colorfully). As a consequence, even if a woman drives more causously, they may be a worse (uncoordinated) driver. Obviously, this isn't all woman or men, just my opinion of where the stereotype comes from.

Seems you're more stuck on the frustration that some skill (often mens) seem to be more accepted by society than others. Take sports. Idolized by society, unfortunately men's physical attributes alone often make men's sports more appreciated than womens.

From what I've experienced and heard about (from girls who have literally totaled their car 3 times in the first 6 months of driving) women seem to be more clueless about whats going on.

They also don't seem to predict what is going to happen. For example, you are about 50 ft before an intersection, and you are in the right lane, someone ahead of you changes lanes to the right. I'd slow down a lot because what most likely happened was the driver in the car ahead realized at the last moment they were supposed to turn there, making them swerve into the right lane just before the intersection.

Women I've talked to seen just react, they don't anticipate or wonder why someone did what they did.

@ AirIntake

When did I say anything about the NBA? I was just using the example that there was once a major negative stigma attached to women playing ANY types of sports. Now that the stigma has much less strength to it, there are more women's sports. The stigma is, of course, still around, but most people nowadays find nothing wrong with women playing sports, so women are more free to pursue sports if they are interested.

And I doubt the small amount of women who are professional drives has anything to do with 'skill,' especially since skill, by definition, is something that is _aquired_.

If I were to guess it would, again, be negative social stigma and myth that is the culprit. Driving, even casual driving, is still considered to be mostly a masculine activity, and professional driving and racing is ESPECIALLY considered masculine.

I'd have to agree with the women and men can both be crappy drivers, as a whole most people suck at driving and think they rock. I remember some quote I heard a while ago about driving 'everyone thinks they're great at driving, but in truth only 25% actually can' it was said by a nascar driver.

And Sheppy, what are you on? Your facts sounded messed up to me so I did a quick google and http://www.endabuse.org/resources/facts/ shows that a hella lot of everything happens to women. Read the site, it's rather depressing. While men are more likely to have violence done to them, women are 5-8 times more likely to have it done to them by domestic partners. And of course in 2000 3x as many women were killed by their husbands, than husbands by their wives.

I wouldn't say accidnets are caused by being overly cautious.

Based on the people with which I work, I'd say it's just apathy. People really don't pay attention to what's going on around them at any given time, so they get out of practice. When out on the road, they don't know how to watch what's going on anywhere but what's visible right over the instrument panel. It's easy to panic when the unexpected happens, especially in mushy American cars, which emphasize isolation and comfort.

I have a WRX (like the article picture) with a manual transmission, so I know the feel of the road and I always know how fast I'm going. My driving habits are remarkably different with cushier cars with automatic transmission. I hate those cars. My dad's Ford Taurus drives me nuts.

Forgot to add: women tend to drive different cars than men. That might have something to do with it, since the type of car has a huge influence on driving habits.

Okay, two stories:

Last night, I was at a four way stop. Myself and a car directly across from me got to the stop sign at the same time. I had no blinker on because I was going straight. The driver in front of me had no blinker on. We start forward at the same time (we are both going straight) when suddenly the other driver begins to turn in front of me. I said F you and the other driver had to slam on the brakes to stop their car.

Women driver not using her blinker.

I was in a parking lot approaching the exit to the highway. I saw a car coming down the road perpendicular to me, in the parking lot. I noticed it was a female driver. She had a stop sign and I did not. I stopped and she went right thru the stop sign. She was going about 30 in a 15 mph zone and blissfully ignorant of the stop sign or my car. I slammed on my horn and she turned a surprised face to me. What a f'ing idiot. If I followed the rules she would have slammed into me.

Men get into accidents because they avoid the bad, oblivious women drivers.

Even my girlfriend (who is a good driver) thinks the majority of women cannot drive. She refuses to get into the car with her friends. She says they talk and ignore everything else when they drive. She has been in cars with friends who drive right thru red lights b/c they are too busy yapping.

As a stereotype; men may drive fast but are more aware of their surroundings while behind the wheel.

Women are too cautious on the road, and more often distracted (kids, cellphones, makeup, whatever)

Trouble is that driving is much like decisions in combat. An okay decision NOW is worth alot more than a perfect decision later. Time is of the essence and women hesitate.

I believe they're mode likely to follow the rules of the road, but that alone doesnt make them good drivers.
