NEWS FLASH: Old people like games!
The New York Times reports not-so-breaking news today that the over-60 set plays the occasional video game. The story hits all the standard points: your Grandma likes the Wii and PopCap's library of casual titles. They also mention the Wiis on cruise-ships thing from yesterday. Think the Iraq war was a big deal in 2006? Well, you're not going to hear about it much this year. The big news in 2007 is hot Grandma-on-game action. We're eagerly awaiting the Times's top story for tomorrow: "Kids Like Rap Music!"

It should be: "THE Kids Like Rap Music!"

Old people are usually bored and easily distracted.
They would be interested in anything that is social or gets them away from their normal routine. Having said that, WiiSports is probably more accessible to old follks than Gears of War.

Hey isn't that guy in the tie in the picture the guy who was the first to get the perfect score in Pac-Man? I've seen him at the CGE.

I hate rap music. Its not real music unless there are real instruments used.
Ken @ Mar 30th 2007 2:57PM
I agree Jack. I agree.
Although I enjoy Techno... so yeah...

Ken
Any music is enjoyable, including Techno if your doped up lol.

Jack
Haha, very true. Very true.

I'd like to see some WW2 vets play Call of Duty 3 and see how they fare after a few days of practice... they might give us young whipper-snappers a run for our money. And we could probably learn some colorful new curse-laden euphemisms as a special bonus.
Katamari might give them a stroke, though...

"We're eagerly awaiting the Times's top story for tomorrow: 'Kids Like Rap Music!'"
Me, I'm eagerly awaiting "Smarmy gamers think they know everything and that the New York Times is antiquated because it editors choose to break news on Iraq and Bush before running a well-written story about a trend that most of America isn't aware of (but some self-important blogger thinks he noticed yesterday)."

Rubang B, that is Billy Mitchell, he set the record on Donkey Kong in 1984, a record that Steve Wiebe beat in 2004 live somewhere out east. Mitchell then sent in a tape of him beating Steve's new score. Within the past few months though, Steve Wiebe has bested Mitchell's new score and is currently sitting on top.
Why do I know this? All the information is in the movie "King of Kong" which I caught at SXSW. The film is freaking awesome. It'll be in theaters in August. GO SEE IT.

That image is indeed of Billy Mitchell, and it's taken from the documentary The King of Kong which I recently saw at the AFI Dallas Film Festival. The movie is incredible. Someone on Joystiq should post about it...
samred @ Mar 30th 2007 5:50PM
Ha! Great minds...

YES, I've been waiting for a movie like this. Thanks guys. And yes, I just looked him up, it's the same Billy Mitchell I saw at the Classic Gaming Expo a few years back. He IS the same Billy Mitchell that got the world's first Pac-Man score. He was racing a guy from Canada over the 4th of July weekend, and became the world's first, and did it wearing an American flag necktie. He's hilarious.
Rubang B @ Mar 30th 2007 6:19PM
And by world's first Pac-Man score I meant to say world's first PERFECT Pac-Man score of 3,333,360 on July 3rd, 1999. He got an award from the founder of Namco later that year.

so technically most music isnt real music then. Until the concert, which is usually played live. you guys are idiots. Im just gonna come out an assume that no one that said that is anything but white? I think the south killed rap with all the bullshit. but people like jus blaze Pharrell and timbaland. Stays ahead of just regular music. And the 3 mentioned producers actually DO use real instruments in there beats. Im disappointed jack im usually hating on everything but xbox. but in this case fuck you!
