Retcon-Alert: New Mortal Kombat film to reboot franchise

Either Midway realized they went too far the moment Liu Kang was turned into a zombie, or they just want to cash-in on a current cinema trend. Regardless, the Mortal Kombat series could stand a serious reboot. Especially after the previous game, Armageddon, featured a dead Johnny Cage split-punching every known kombatant ever in the crotch.

Should the new film ever make it to theaters, director Christopher Mink says it will be a retelling of the Mortal Kombat universe, a la Batman Begins. This would also fall in line with MK co-creator Ed Boon's vision of a completely redone fighting game for the eighth sequel in the series. With scripts being thrown in and out of Threshold, Midway and another, unknown studio, progress is still being made albeit slowly.

In other Oscar worthy news, Mink told IMDB readers that he has met with former Mortal Kombat stars Robin Shou and Christopher Lambert. For Raiden, we expect no less, for there can be... only one!

I have to say i loved the mortal combat films but i cant see the 3rd film rebooting franchise. I just think they need to focus a bit more on the games they are fun to play but i just dont feel they live up to tekken or dead or alive.

I just hope they stick to the game storylines this time. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first movie (second was interesting but crap) but the whole thing with Scorpion and Sub-Zero on the same team, nah, didn't work for me. I also hope they don't use random game phrases for the sake of it (i.e. Lui Kang saying FLAWLESS VICTORY after a fight that he clearly got hit in)

I agree, Mink - the guy in charge seems pretty cool, so it should be cool, this is the longest wait Ever!

the script hasn't been completed yet for the film so i would concentrate on that before getting excited about mk coming out at the cenema.

once the script is done (hoping not too many years left to go!) then celebrate!

the first mortal kombat movie was pretty neat, and I thought the seccond was entertaining! I liked Sindel in Anhihilation and Cyrax.
Shinnok diddn't look anything like shinnok in the seccond film, i believe it'd b neat to have shinnok and quan chi battle it out over the amulet. only to have onaga bust up the battle and claim it for his dragon self!

btw Nitara the vampire woman would look interesting in a movie???

Is it 100% Official yet?
Has Mink finished the script?
has the script been approved?
is it on it's way?
Do we know the storyline yet?
Will Quan chi and Shinnok be the Villains of the movie?
