Today's franchise face-offiest game video: Bauer versus Riker

It's Riker versus Bauer in tonight's video pick. (What, you thought we'd post about that other video again?) Through the magic of editing -- and a rocking soundtrack -- these two leaders face off in a game of Street Fighter. Bauer uses his ability to multitask to get Gamefaqs tips, while beardless Riker has only his grimace and guile. This YTMND mash-up loops soon after it starts, but the quick editing is dense with detail; we laughed through several repetitions.
The video isn't embedable, so you'll have to venture into the dangerous tubes beyond Joystiq. But be sure to come back to tell us what you think.

greatest. video. ever. The music tops it off.

It was wacky. There's not much else to say. Oh except that Ryu is gay.
vaylen @ Mar 30th 2007 12:32AM
Yes, at one point in the show 24 and one of the Star Trek-TNG movies one of the characters uses a joystick. Is this enough to build a joke around? The person who made this apparently thinks so... The rest of us are far less certain.

Do YTMNDs really count as being "videos"?
Don't get me wrong. I love YTMND (and this one, in particular, was awesome)... But is a a looping GIF accomanpied by a looping MP3 a "movie"?

"Don't get me wrong. I love YTMND (and this one, in particular, was awesome)... But is a a looping GIF accomanpied by a looping MP3 a "movie"?"
Well... movie is short for motion picture. And these are a series of pictures that give the illusion of motion. So to answer your question, I don't know.
:)

"while beardless Riker has only his grimace and guile."
But it's Ryu vs. Ken. No Guile in sight.

If it was extended longer it would have exponentially made it more cool.
Martez @ Mar 30th 2007 1:37AM
God bless YTMND.
Rubang B @ Mar 30th 2007 2:10AM
Great idea, but too short. Almost totally amazing.
Henry @ Mar 30th 2007 2:26AM
Is it sad that I can tell that they actually used mutiple versions of street fighter 2 for those edits?
mrfong @ Mar 30th 2007 2:54AM
Hey guys, a YTMND isn't a video, it's a picture/animated gif + sound.
I think you need to visit the site more often.
synce @ Mar 30th 2007 3:21AM
It's not a movie newbie. Jeez I'm surprised at the amount of people who see a gif on a site and think it's a video, and not just YTMND. I mean regular gifs without any sound.
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ Mar 30th 2007 4:28AM
Oh. my. god. Only Joystiq commenters would argue that a moving image at around 10-15fps with sound was not a video.
Do I really have to quote Wikipedia?
"Video (Latin for "I see", first person singular present, indicative of videre, "to see") is the technology of electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing a sequence of still images representing scenes in motion."
Isn't that exactly what this is? Electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing of a sequence of still images representing scenes in motion?
OH. MY. GOD. Joystiq bloggers should get a purple heart for putting up with this crap.
BPM @ Mar 30th 2007 4:42AM
"Joystiq bloggers should get a purple heart for putting up with this crap."
Including you, Conrad, ol' pal? :P
I never meant to bring a stupid debate to this thread by making my first post. Rather... Uh... I forgot my purpose...
NeverSage @ Mar 30th 2007 5:54AM
So, the definitive answer is that a moving gif is a type of video. I think we just made history, gentlemen.
Rutilcaper @ Mar 30th 2007 10:04AM
Need more "The Ken Song"
C. Grant @ Mar 30th 2007 8:19AM
Conrad's already earned his blogging battle scars and associated decorations!
Keeko @ Mar 30th 2007 8:35AM
Conrad, no need to pull out the freaking dictionary. Everyone here knows what the difference is between a YTMND gif an f'n video is.
Joystiq stated there was a video after the link, and that's what I was expecting. I'm certain that's what veryone complaining was expecting too. Only to be disappointed to see a 10 second loop of stupid nonsense. Barely passable as funny IMO.
WTangoFoxtrot @ Mar 30th 2007 9:53AM
Hmm as long as Diena Troi was not pioliting anything during the shooting of this vid !
i like how the Ensign looks on in utter disbelief thinking she aint gonna die just because its a harmless video game but just you wait....

So at how many frames per second do we draw the line between an animated .gif and a video, oh wise ones?
NeverSage @ Mar 30th 2007 9:24PM
I'll stick by gif being a type of video. Even if it is the most basic level. A gif can still can give the illusion of motion.
