April Fool's Alert #1: Wii.TV's future Zelda
We warned you yesterday. Welcome to many site's nebulous comprehension that April Fool's Day is actually April 1 -- not the day or week before, or the whole month for that matter. Wii.TV gets the first spot in our alerts as they announce Legend of Zelda ... that's it, they didn't even bother to come up with a subhead. Go through the effort of editing a five minute video and don't even bother to come up with a full title. No, Legend of Zelda: Future Calls or Legend of Zelda: Knights of the Ganon Wars.
The video is a compilation of Star Wars concept drawings, Final Fantasy stills and other random elements. Actually, that would make for a good deconstruction exercise. Know where the components come from? Give a shout out.

Cool, i can't wait to zoom around a futuristic Hyrule on my Motorcycle named Epona and fight Jedi!
W00t!
James S. @ Mar 31st 2007 3:12PM
You've got to hand it to them, though, it does look like they put a lot of work into that April Fool's concept, even if it does fall a bit short in terms of execution.
Xanatos11 @ Mar 31st 2007 3:13PM
Soo fake. it all points to it. Nintendo would have to be INSANE in ways no gamer or fanboy can imagine to do that.
And that "motorcycle", the new Epona, is actually the Megazone from Megazone 23.
Liquidize @ Mar 31st 2007 3:13PM
Sigh. I hate April 1. Some of the jokes/pranks, like this, could be cool if they actually put time and effort into development of stuff. Of course, since this is a nintendo franchise it's not hard to determine this is a joke. Nintendo growing it's characters up? what? (spoken as a nintendo-sega fanboy)
Oshi @ Mar 31st 2007 3:17PM
I secretly wish this was real :(
meist3r @ Mar 31st 2007 3:21PM
Some of the renderings (I would argue most of them and the drawings too) are mostly taken from deviantart.com. Here one of the most obvious pictures:

Found in a german Nintendo fanboy forum (http://www.nintendofans.de/forum/viewtopic.php?p=551609#551609) via the comments of some Wii blog (http://www.wiiinsider.de/news.php?id=148517).
izzy @ Mar 31st 2007 3:21PM
lol, i'll laugh if nintendo r actually working on a zelda game like this. Remember they said twilight would be the last zelda of it's kind
LucerinRed @ Mar 31st 2007 3:22PM
you know, as bad as the execution is, I actually wouldn't mind a game like this now.
ooohh steampunk zelda.
stoprockmovie @ Mar 31st 2007 3:24PM
I could dig it, if Nintendo ever decided to go in that direction. Legend of Zelda has a loose timeline, not unlike Castlevania, yes? A tale that spans generations... so why not a future generation?
meist3r @ Mar 31st 2007 3:25PM
Grr...thanks to the great Wordpress comments box the url to the pic got screwed up. Search for a pic that is called "future egypt" and is located in the sci-fi section.
izzy @ Mar 31st 2007 3:27PM
do you guys think this is what nintendo meant when they said that twilight was the last of it's kind?
please comment
izzy @ Mar 31st 2007 3:28PM
this bloody thing puts my name as izzy, when i originally had it as ish... o well
ISH
snatch @ Mar 31st 2007 3:31PM
The nerd who made that makes for an even worse announcer than what is found in the annals of G4.
exavier126 @ Mar 31st 2007 3:37PM
I would atually buy a Wii if they made this...
I hate these April Fool's day announcments, especially that World of Starcraft one last year :(
a_p77 @ Mar 31st 2007 8:56PM
lol so many star wars pictures. Hyrule=Coruscant
Also @ 3 min, that is from iRobot
Nice try WiiTV
Zelda will never have guns...
A @ Mar 31st 2007 3:55PM
i want it
Mrfrog @ Mar 31st 2007 4:01PM
"Im on a never ending quest to save my girlfriend!"
ZenGaijin @ Mar 31st 2007 4:08PM
Lol, this is an elaborate ass joke.
Nintendo would never have the balls to do this never in a million years.
smellytim @ Mar 31st 2007 4:17PM
that would be super tight though- like a star wars meets zelda thing in the future and hyrule is like coruscant or something, or better yet the whole universe is Hyrule and like Tatooine would be the desert and the ship you travel in would be called Epona. I would love that so much
Liquidize @ Mar 31st 2007 4:11PM
16-LMAO. All we need now is a fairy named Xander (sp) and it's set.....
samfish @ Mar 31st 2007 4:14PM
It was cool up until the whole 'Link rides a motorcycle' part.
Otherwise, a steampunk Zelda is a kinda cool idea.
vidGuy @ Mar 31st 2007 4:20PM
Minus the motorcycle (anyone get an image of Cloud?), I'd buy it! ;)
the kaptain @ Mar 31st 2007 4:25PM
this video makes me cry.....i want this game SOOOOOOOO BADDDLLYYYYY!!!!!!!!
olhado @ Mar 31st 2007 4:27PM
Too bad Hyrule sinks beneath the ocean before it would even have the chance to develop this technology... although I suppose it could be waaaaaaaaay far in the future when the Deku forest has spread and created land...
eskimo @ Mar 31st 2007 4:32PM
I hate it when the only REALLY great idea in the gaming industry... is fake.
Hirsbrunner @ Mar 31st 2007 4:41PM
Although some elements are way out there, I don't think it's entirely impossible. What exactly DID N. mean by TP being the last of it's kind?
Drop the over-the-top parts (motorcycle,S.Enix, etc), and who knows?
A futuristic Zelda may not be so far-fetched.
Suhail Patel @ Mar 31st 2007 4:49PM
April fools is so 2006....
vidGuy @ Mar 31st 2007 4:51PM
April fools is so April First.... (not today)
Mr Khan @ Mar 31st 2007 4:54PM
@ Hirsbrunner
What they meant is that TP was the last game that essentially played just like OoT, but with different worlds/gfx/items
The next one should be a revolutionary transition on the grounds of the jump from Link to the Past to OoT
cristi? @ Mar 31st 2007 5:01PM
A futuristic Zelda wouldnt be bad...
That Artwork sux (Except Zelda *-*)
Link shooting laser to enemies, Ganon is Cyborg because Link has broken his body several time through time xD
vidGuy @ Mar 31st 2007 5:06PM
And OoT was basically just a translation of LttP into 3D. It's going to be very exciting when they announce what Zelda Wii will be like, considering everything we know about Zelda has been essentially true since 1991.
Kye @ Mar 31st 2007 5:09PM
Ok
I'll be the one with enough balls to stand up and say:
This idea sucks! so much. In so many ways.
Really. This is why we have FF et al.
I like link using swords and boomerangs and running round a forest wearing a tunic.
Not guns, not motorcycles, not leathers.
Trace @ Mar 31st 2007 5:19PM
Never seen wii.tv before. I love how they ripped their intro music from Sonic Adventure.
And yeah, futuristic Zelda might work, but this ain't it. There's too much concept art that is so radically different, the ideas and imagery clash in the worst possible ways. Having Link ride a motorcycle isn't a bad idea, but having him call it "Epona" is.
In short, clever idea for an April fool's prank. Badly executed.
AzaMcWazza @ Apr 1st 2007 7:58AM
You know, it's not as silly as it sounds. I'd love to play a game where Link was screwed over, or found himself transported into the future, a dark sin city or bladerunnerish type future.
You'd still have to keep the old zelda franchise running with it's style I think, but I'd welcome an adult one.
Martez @ Mar 31st 2007 5:25PM
I wish.
Seroth @ Mar 31st 2007 5:27PM
This would be awesome...too bad the Zelda fanboys wouldn't let it happen. If anything changes in the Zelda series, they'll have a fit. They just want OOT over and over and over again...
Speedy @ Apr 3rd 2007 2:07PM
The Idea is great, but it wouldn't be a Legend of Zelda Game. The Legend of Star Fantasy: Final War ... New Genre just long as they keep away from yellow robots that speaks English. The legend of(Zelda) Star(wars) (Final)Fantasy: Final(Fantasy) (Star)Wars... if you didn't get the joke before. Or it would be like instead of LTTP it would be LTTF... You know like Link to the future.., Almost means they might get yelled at for something that sounds familiar to Back to the Future.
This has to be a pretty damn good April Fools thing.
MacAoidh @ Mar 31st 2007 5:42PM
LOL, I actually said this would be cool to a friend today, a steam punk of sci-fi Zelda! Let's hope Nintendo are listening and are willing to experiment (yeah right), Zelda desperately needs a revoloution (no pun intended).
Hirsbrunner @ Mar 31st 2007 5:36PM
Based upon N.'s intentions w/the Wii, and how the new controls were implemented (wonderfully) into TP, a GCN game, I wonder where Zelda Wii will take us.
I'm just glad they're in charge and not me. I can't fathom what the next step would/could be.
Ben @ Mar 31st 2007 6:20PM
Nintendo take note: I want this game. So make it.
And while we're on the subject, let's have some X-Wings in Super Mario Galaxy, eh?
someshow @ Mar 31st 2007 6:19PM
WHOA!
I was just thinking the other day that it would be cool to play a Zelda game in future Hyrule.
Weird how people get ideas around the same time.
To bad it is not real.
Cyber Punk Zelda would sell like hot cakes.
samred @ Mar 31st 2007 6:23PM
Add another vote for "this would be great." Whether it was Zelda moving into the future, or the Miyamoto teams creating a new series and crafting some sort of futuristic adventure at the complete opposite angle of the Metroid Prime series, I think the results would be impressive.
nsr_schn_maul @ Mar 31st 2007 7:03PM
Whoever thinks that video is believable is out of their damned minds.
Dekox @ Mar 31st 2007 7:12PM
ZenGaijin is right, Nintendo would never have the balls to do it. But it sure would be great, it would give the series some freshness.
Steve 3.2 @ Mar 31st 2007 7:35PM
Why Nintendo may never do it, it would be interesting to have a game mix the game play of Zelda with a setting in a futuristic world.
Revo @ Mar 31st 2007 8:18PM
All the people who are saying that Nintendo would never do anything to change Zelda have apparently never heard of Wind Waker. They gave the franchise a drastic change in art direction in the face of a massive wave of fanboy opposition. While this is definitely fake, I think Wind Waker shows that Nintendo isn't entirely unwilling to change basic elements of their franchises.
Spex @ Mar 31st 2007 8:44PM
I have to say this is an extremely well placed and designed prank. Especially since some speculate a new Zelda game has been in development since before the Wii was release, maybe into a year of development. That much from the video could be very true. And the idea of making Zelda seem more modern is interesting to say the least. It's an incredible prank, but I'm sure someone on internet land (maybe even myself) will try to make it reality in some shape or form.
sheppy @ Mar 31st 2007 9:19PM
"And that "motorcycle", the new Epona, is actually the Megazone from Megazone 23."
Bzzt, wrong. Megazone is actually the name of the spaceship in Megazone 23. Just as the central core is called Bahamut and Eve is the key to Bahamut. Adam just casts judgement on everyone and decides at random intervals to reduce the population wholesale. The bike itself, also known as a mobile terminal (which is why it's so weak compared to the other robots) is called the Garland.
David @ Mar 31st 2007 10:23PM
It was nicely done until they said "The Release is 2008", yeah right, it's Nintendo, theyshould have said 2010 or something.
BrotherEstapol @ Apr 1st 2007 12:25AM
This I would buy...pity it's not real. :(
