In Gamespot's review of recent Wii release Cooking Mama: Cook Off, they make a complaint that is becoming an all-too-common refrain among Wii fans: "The motion controls just aren't reliable. Some are overly sensitive... and some aren't sensitive enough."
There are bigger stakes here than the occasional botched omelette. Over the months since launch, the unpredictable Wii Remote has led to a maddening dichotomy. Some games are too easy, while others are too hard -- for all the wrong reasons.
The easy games, like Wii Sports Bowling, let the most feeble grandma instantly taste sweet victory. But the player's actions don't seem to have that much impact on the results. Swing the remote more-or-less the right way, and you're almost guaranteed a strike.
Gamers who crave a deeper challenge have to settle for battling incomprehensible controls. Wii Sports Boxing is certainly "difficult," but that's because the best strategy is "Flail your arms like a Muppet on PCP." In Wii Sports Golf, you can take the exact same swing five times in a row and get wildly different results each time. And then there's Cooking Mama. Here's a tip: go into your real-world kitchen, and cook some actual food. It'll be about 9,000 times less frustrating, and might result in you eating something healthier than your regular diet of Slim Jims and Funyuns.
So far, the revolutionary controller that was supposed to be universally accessible is confusing, finicky, and imprecise. Maybe over time, developers will learn how to create challenging games that also have intuitive controls, not just one or the other. Until then, the Wii Remote is breaking more than just TV screens... it's breaking hearts.

Can you AI/Physics Nazi's shut up already? Is there even a game out for the Wii where the AI was noticeably crappy? Unless you actually develop games and know how AI works, don't comment on it. Physics? What have physics done for games? The barrel rolls when I push it! *yawn* Donkey Kong had rolling barrels, at least then they were integral to the game experience. For games like say, tennis, football, and the likes, physics might be more important. Mario Tennis for N64 didn't have insane physics for the ball, did anyone care? The ball bounced like you'd expect it to, that's all I really ask. You can talk about graphics all you want, at least THAT is one major shortcoming of the Wii, the AI and physics bullshit on the other hand is getting tiresome.

Well said, Rabish12. It's almost funny how this entire topic came to be. Are we all really so naive as to assume this is the best the Wii has to offer? I remember as clear as day that when the 360 came out many people were complaining about how half the games looked worse than their Xbox counterparts.
It's all part of the process. The developers need time to get used to new hardware, and in the case of the Wii that goes beyond simple graphical enhancements, they also have to program in a whole new way to work in the controller.
And by the way, in response to what someone said earlier, the GameCube was about equal in power with the Xbox, and the Wii has double (or more?) the power of a GameCube. So yes, it *is* more powerful than an Xbox.

Just an observation, but most of the comments defending the Wii point to the most simple game of the bunch... Wii Sports. "...just look at Wii Sports..." We've all seen that you tube video of the two year old playing Wii Tennis. I think the problem is we, as gamers, require a more challenging experience with our video games.

Or to word it better, the gesture recognition dev kit provided to third parties.
When we talk of developers pushing the Wii, we won't talk about how they push it graphically (because that will never happen), we will talk about them pushing the control algorithms. This is going to lead to a lot of horribly controlled games, and games that are difficult because of the controls and not the mechanics (Like playing DDR with a broken dance pad).
When the better algorithms come about, one of two things will happen. The code will be shared/sold or kept private. Imagine the benefit to the company that has these better algorithms. They will be the one company that can consistantly push out good games for the Wii, while the others struggle to get out average quality games with control issues. Only time can tell the success destined for the Wii.

The responsiveness of the Wii controlers seems to vary from game to game. Wii Play has come up with some excellent uses of the controller. I can't get enough of the cow racing game.
I agree with the inconsistency with putting in the golf game. I can test out the same motion numerous times, but when I actually try to putt, either nothing happens or hit it way too hard.

The control isn't imprecise the problem you're having is that its too precise. The wii is capable of picking up such tiny amounts of movement. So when its developed for if the movement you make isn't in what they assume is wanted then it won't work. Its not that its imprecise its that the movement thats being made isn't what its expected. Personally i think that you guys just suck at playing the wii.

I have to say I personally havn't been totally sold on the motion controls. They are fun and easy to grasp in general. I personally like the Wii Bowling controls and didn't have too many issues with the golf but I hate the boxing controls cause I have to sometimes re-punch 2 or 3 times for it to register unless I snap the controller to the side but seems to negate the spirit of the controller.
I also disapointed by the tennis controls cause they are not based on actual movement but more about timing. That is my issue with the sword play in games like Red Steel too sad thing is the sword play in Wario ware Smooth moves is much better though still not perfect.
One thing I wish Nintendo would have done but Im sure they did the for ease of set up is to make it where you could calibrate the wiimote more to the player/tv. That way when I point at the screen Im pointing exactly where I want to now it is more like a mouse. I think the motion controls could benifit from calibration too.

What it boils down to is what everything boils down to....bad game design.

Saddly, the Gameing Industry is also an INDUSTRY. All industries have 10% revolutions and 90% crapy shoveware.
Also, when did Nintendo said the control was going to be 1:1? They said the Wiimote would have motion control and IR pointer....how dose that translate into 1:1. Sounds like a bunch of self-made bullshit hype to me.

My friend bought Cooking Mama, played it for a couple days straight, mastered the game, and unlocked everything. Then he brings it over to my house. I cook 4 things. Then I challenge him to a cook-off! He tells me he's gonna destroy me with his 1337 cooking skills. We race through a dish AND I DESTROYED HIM. The controls are very VERY pick-up and play oriented.

"a multitude of children's titles" - Well this one is just ignorant. Yeah, the Wii has children's titles, as well as ones that any age can enjoy. But so does every other gaming system in history. But it also has a "multitude" of other types of games as well. And many more on the way.

The thing is, and here's the big conspiracy... adults make that sound too! *gasp* Have you ever seen an adult at an amusement park? I rest my case. It is a pretty weird name though, but no stranger than "Xbox".
So there you have it, you're quite right, uglyteeth, the Wii *is* aimed at children... and teens, adults, and the elderly. It's just aimed at everyone. Just like "E for everyone" doesn't mean it's just for kids, it just means *anyone* can enjoy it.

As far as the wii sports games go, I find that it takes quite a bit of skill to chip-in or put in from the other side of the green. That said, the practice IS inaccurate, but the actual swinging is much more sensitive. Bowling also takes skill to bowl consecutive strikes; I don't know what wii bowling the Joystiq Eds have been playing.
I have to say though, Cooking mama has worked just fine for me and my folks, with perhaps a bit of misunderstanding of the controls and difficulty on peeling potatoes.
Perhaps the single worst controls I've seen in a Wii game is Warioware, where 80% of the difficulty is figuring out how to use the buggy controls.
I have learned however, that placement of the sensor bar is key to good gameplay, as well as being aware of other IR sources, including reflections.

You dont have to counterpoint everything someone you disagree with says. You really think the list of truly solid, full game, experiences on the Wii is that great? Come on... You had to include GODFATHER. A game that is decent at best and exists on every platform.

It doesn't matter if a system has a lot of titles aimed at children, that doesn't mean the console itself is for children, it merely means the developers are choosing to put those titles on it. Nintendo has no real say in how other companies try to utilize its' console. But that doesn't mean that Nintendo wants it to be utilized in that way.
But for the record, the Sony and Microsoft's systems have just as many titles geared at younger kids, they just aren't as in your face about it. No, but actually I'm quite thrilled that this stuff if being brought into the limelight.
If you sit around pretending that Nintendo has already "revolutionized" the industry and go on and on about how there new controller is already perfect, you'd be lying. How else do you think issues like this get brought to Nintendo's attention. I do believe that it was this exact same kind of negative press and criticism that resulted in things like a new HDMI-toting 360, a better PS3 online service (Home), background downloading on 360 and PS3, etc.
If the consumers just blindly go on and on about how perfect and great the Wii is, then Nintendo will think it's perfect and they won't work to change anything.
I agree with everything said here. Wiisports/Zelda was a great choice for the intro of the Wiimote because they are two titles that don't require precision aiming/motions to play them. In Zelda you just flail the Wiimote from side-to-side to do the same sword flash over and over. They are "forgiving" titles that will easily mask any major precision control issues because neither game requires precision control in any way.
Now that the Smoke and Mirrors of the "all mighty and revolutionary Wii launch" is beginning to clear, more and more reviewers are going to point out these issues.

So now can we finally accept that the Xbox360 has the BEST and most SUITABLE controller for GAMING out of the 3 new systems. It has rumble, it has reliable wireless and the console it self has more quality titles AND better graphics than the ps3 and the wii...
and still some people can't see why the 360 is the console of choice for this generation. While us 360 players have been enjoying 'next gen' hi def games for ages, all the nay sayers are just getting shafted, be it on prices, lack of games, underpowere or shoddily performing hardware.
I like nintendo but wisely I waited on buying a Wii until they had worked all the kinks out and launch Wii-Lite or Wii-Advance sometime in the not so distant future no doubt. Once the first party games come along that make use of and justify the controller then all will be well in Nintendo land (for a while), the sales they have had, while great for them, doesn't mean anything if it it tails off through lack of games and bad word of mouth about dodgy/gimmick control.
