New Gears gametype, fixes incoming
More details about an incoming update to Gears of War have been lovingly culled from some Mark Rein knowledge-dropping over at the official Gears forums.Rein said the update, which is currently in the certification process, will fix a few glitches -- which he declined to elaborate on -- and add 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024 (Congratulations, you two!).
The part of the update that will probably interest most is the addition of a new multiplayer gametype called "Annex." Rein doesn't say exactly what Annex is, but claims that some who've played it have called it the best gametype yet, edging out "Shooting Guys," "Shooting One Certain Guy" and "Shooting Guys Then Curb Stomping Them."
Rein also confirms later in the thread that the update will be free and that more information is on the way this week.

What does 1280x1024 VGA run at the moment?
Ranus Studios @ Apr 2nd 2007 1:25PM

Finally, a Joystiq attempt at humor that I actually found humorous. One of my only qualms with Gears is that it doesn't have much online game mode variety.
It is very good at what it does and I've logged tons of awesome online hours into this game. But the online should have included a respawns mode for the n00bs and some more unique modes. Even having the option of changing the starting weapons set would have been nice.
I could definately go for an unlimited ammo torque bow match. Or how about all frags but no frag sticking. Only throwing. Pistols only? Slappers only? These modes get old quick, but their fun to tool around with for a minute.

yeah. Guess I'm 1 of the 2 people as well. What you gonna do when you get stuck in the back room on the PC monitor (which I expect most people to be using 19" LCDs at 1280x1024) while the wife uses the plasma.

1280x1024 currently downscales to 900x720 for some reason. You'd have to use 1024x768 to get the highest quality on a 5:4 monitor.

OH!!!
It's a war gear.....as in "Gears" of War.
I get it!!!!
/sarcasm
I love me some GOW online....a new gametype would be welcome. And I too like the idea of switching up weapons on ranked matches. Give the users some freedom.

frag tag ftw!!!
screw you pussies who can't handle it
Miles @ Apr 2nd 2007 2:50PM
How about just fixing weapon sliding, instant chainsaw kills and long jumping?
blamecanada @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:02PM
@11, I assume thats what this update will do.

Do you mean it's rendering at 900x720 and then upscaling it to display at 1280x1024? What does it render at when displaying 1024x768 then?
I use VGA with my HDTV and my only choices are between 1024x768 and 1280x1024 (even though it's a 1366x768 16x9 TV).
Miles @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:05PM
I also assume it will also. But not mentioning it still has me thinking it might still be there.
Miles @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:06PM
nice way to put also in the first sentence twice...
Daniel @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:28PM
AirIntake: Update your 360, it has more options now, up to 1920x1080.
I think this came about in the Fall '06 update.
IIRC It doesn't do 1366x768, but does do 1360x768.

And I guess I'm the other one...'cept I'm using a 17" LCD at 1280x1024.

@Daniel
Yeah, I have the update already. But my TV will only properly display the non-widescreen resolutions, so I'm stuck with 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024.
Daniel @ Apr 2nd 2007 4:57PM
AirIntake: Wow that's pretty lame.
Paulypies @ Apr 2nd 2007 5:08PM
I wanted them to put the 1280x1024 res back to how it was too, they made a previously beautiful game fugly with the upscaled none widescreen image. most vga 1280x1024 users really wanted this after they broke it in the 1st update. cheers epic. much appreciated, even if it took a long time
Grant @ Apr 2nd 2007 6:03PM
hm, sounds like i'm the mythical 3rd person.
nice to hear i can enjoy the crispest graphics possible now.
Levon @ Apr 2nd 2007 10:53PM
i think annex could have something to do with aquiring territory or buildings. something along the lines of capture the flag. that'd be cool...
Dimitri @ Apr 10th 2007 3:44AM
What about 4:3 Monitor Users, no game is displayed as it should be even on 4:3 resolutions like 1024x768. We get black or a stretched image. The only resolution that works is 640x480 but that isnt really the way its meant to be played.
I know it can be fixed by forcing 4:3 resolutions in-game because the Dashboard works great on any resolution, even widescreen ones.
Dimitri @ Apr 10th 2007 3:48AM
*we get black boxes
