ThinkGeek 8-bit tie prank could be a reality
Apparel website ThinkGeek posted a number of fake products yesterday during the internet-wide April Fools fool-a-thon. When we laid eyes on the jagged 8-bit tie, we fell in love. ThinkGeek apparently received a flood of e-mail begging them to make the tie a reality. Assuming it's not an extension of their prank, it looks like they're working on it. For REAL.Posted below the tie's price information is a small note from the ThinkGeek staff: "Hey! You! Quit emailing us to make this for REAL already. We promise, we'll make it.". The "add to cart" button is also missing, which is where fake products revealed themselves as hoaxes.
Real or just more prankage? We're hoping it's the former. Please don't toy with our gentle hearts like this, ThinkGeek. We might actually look forward to meetings, weddings, and funerals if we can wear that tie.

I don't wear ties.
I'll wear this one.
VWatermelon @ Apr 2nd 2007 8:18AM
That was a joke? I actually thought it was real, the WiiHelm was silly, but this seemed just silly enough to be real.
I would totally wear this.
VWatermelon @ Apr 2nd 2007 8:19AM
But only if it was 100% silk, I do have standards you know...

i don't wear ties... but i'll start wearing them if this product comes to reality
Gimbal @ Apr 2nd 2007 8:34AM
I would totally wear that to jury duty.

It's pathetic how little artistic skill some of you have... You guys can't make this yourselves? Come on! It's a TIE, for gosh sakes! It's a strip of material. It doesn't involve anything more complex than cutting and sewing, and if you can work a Power Glove, and can't work a sewing machine, you're simply pathetic.
This is a funny idea, but utterly useless. I don't wear ties unless I have to, and when I have to, I can't wear novelty ties because the 'have to' part is usually pretty serious.

Now I just need my 8-bit shirt and pants and jacket.

I loved this story when I saw it on 4colorrebellion.com

You should try being a consumer whore like the rest of us. It's freakin' awesome. All you have to do is be good at your job and then you buy all the goods and services from other people with the money you make.
The downside is that you won't have enough time to hunt and/or grow your own food, make your own clothes, program your own games, etc. But the good thing is...you won't always have to!

Me too.
This ALMOST makes me wish I had to wear a tie to work.
...almost.
Alas, I work in an office where the dress code is pretty slack, thankfully. Today I'm wearing an unbuttoned short sleeve shirt, a Justice League T and shorts.
I KNOW you all wanted to know that!

Actually this is a screenprinted silk tie that I'm assuming has some sort of clip-on mechanism. Usually stuff like the clips from clip-on ties can only be bought in bulk, and the amount of money it would cost to buy the screens, printing equiptment, screenprinting ink, photo emulsion, other sundry materials and the TIME it would take to perfect all this and then sew it all together is friggin' ABSURD when you can get the tie for $19.99.
Yes. You're right. I could absolutely do this because I've taken screenprinting and sewing classes before, but those classes didn't just teach me how to screenprint and how to sew, they also taught me that it can be a PAIN IN THE FRICKIN' ASS to do something like this, and that the amount of time it would take me to put all this together and make a version of this tie that was as good as the one they have in their example photographs would cost me WAY more than the $19.99 they're selling it for.

I also want one of the "My Other Shirt is Clever" shirts.
razer @ Apr 2nd 2007 2:11PM
This picture is hard proof that tattoo's are out-of-style and passe. When the nerd fixing your PC is wearing an 8-bit tie and has a tribal wrap tattoo. LOL
spl1nter @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:07PM
@ Gimbal
I laughed. A lot.
ackmondual @ Apr 2nd 2007 3:10PM
I was too concerned about trying to close my dropping jaw after seeing this...

to notice the tie was an April Fool's joke/prank.
jchensor @ Apr 2nd 2007 4:22PM
I have to second spl1nter's comment. Seriously, Gimbal, that was pure comic genius.
Alexander @ Apr 2nd 2007 6:19PM
hope so this tie looks sweet cant wait
jen_thinkgeek @ Apr 2nd 2007 9:50PM
For the record, we really are making the tie. In fact we've been working on it since before April 1. We'll keep you posted as soon as we have an ETA.
@razer
