this is silly, the commercial isn't about making fun of video games, its about a kid eating fatty foods and turning into such a big fatty that he can't have his fatty sundae cus he can't fit into the fatty proof maze. Leave it to VH1 to misunderstand something, leave gaming critiques to people the rest of us, and you go and plan your next celebreality crap show

Regardless, I'm sure Mr. Chubby Chocobo was offended by this.

They probably "misrepresented" Pac-man to avoid too much attention from Namco's legal team. Also I'm sure they used Pac-man as a model because it's so iconic. Few video game franchises are so universally recognized as Pac-man still is today. Pac-man sounds are still used to represent playing video games in television and movies for the same reason. If modern game sounds were used it might not be as clear to the viewer that it is a video game, rather than just something on TV (although the controller in hand would be a pretty obvious hint).

Also NES style graphics (those graphics were way too good for an Atari) can be made on the cheap. Recreating a modern 3D game would have required quite a bit more of a time and money investment to convey the same message. Subway is not known for flashy, expensive, effects laden commercials. In fact most of it's commercials seem to consist of Jared showing off his poor acting skills, having some food related conversation with some other bad actor, usually some slender young woman who obviously would never in real life ever eat the Big Mac that Jared supposedly talks her out of eating.

Looks to be more based on Joust than Pac-Man.

Ok, if Nintendo makes people fat, then why isn't Japan the most obese countries on the planet? Or maybe the correlation should be how the society values education? That might be a better measurement.
