Move over, Pokemon. Another Wii game is receiving the Wi-Fi Connection treatment: Mario Strikers Charged. The world's favorite sport can now be played virtually by players all over the globe. A Mario-themed World Cup now seems inevitable.
According to the UK official site, "Players can also utilise Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to take on players from across the globe! Multiplayer modes include Ranked mode where players can compete to climb up leaderboards and Unranked mode where they can quickly select and play friends."
Charged hits UK Wii systems on May 25th. Unfortunately, a US release hasn't been announced yet.

Sorry, but since when does an E rating mean the game was intended for children? There are plenty of comedy movies appropriate for all ages, are they intended for kids too? Wasn't Zelda Teen anyway?
Next point, "I'm sick of Mario!1!!" is bullshit. Sure he is in many sport games spinoffs, but why would you get sick of Mario for being in them... unless you buy them? Don't buy the tiresome sports (and the horrible party) games, and all you have is one true platforming game, one RPG game, and one Kart game per generation. How can you get tired of Mario then? It may be the same plumber, but the game play isn't always the same ('cept for Sunshine), the setting isn't always the same, the story isn't always the same (Peach does get kidnapped in much of the games, but let's face it, it's always a different story), so what's the problem? We have Metal Gear Solid, which is always the same (good) gameplay with a few enhancements, always the same setting (terrorists steal weapon, you go sneak at their headquarters), the story varies a little, but for a 40% the same every time. No one is bitching about the lame Acid spinoffs either. Why isn't everyone complaining that they are tired of Snake?
Next, "Nintendo pls new IP's!!!". They do make new IP's. The main beef seems to be that they are still making Zelda/Mario/Metroid games. They are ALWAYS great games, so why ditch them? As long as they don't run the characters down like Sega did with Sonic, there is no big deal. They can make the Zelda/Mario/Metroid games for eternity as far as I'm concerned, as long as the games keep being great. Do I want new IP's? Sure, why not, but they shouldn't replace Mario and Zelda, but rather join them as classic franchises.
End of rant!

Samfish was correct. My favorite game is Helly Kitty Island Adventures. If anybody wants to come call me girly or "not hardcore" or whatever, I will put your eye out with my dick.

Vogel's 12 steps of the heroes journey:
1) The ordinary world
2) The call to adventure
3) The refusal of the call
4) The meeting with the mentor
5) The crossing of the first threshold
6) Tests, allies, and enemies
7) The approach to the innermost cave
8) The ordeal
9) The reward
10) The road back
11) The resurrection
12) The return with the reward
Practically all (good) games with a story follows this formula, except for games which implies a sequel.

I’m not sure what this argument has to do with Strikers being one of the first online games for Nintendo, but I’ll wade into this.
The big fight is over the fact that Nintendo has a arcade style soccer game and decides to brand it through use of characters that they’ve had and earned a general amount of good deal of good will and nostalgia with? Could the game work with creating a bunch of random cartoony characters to put in it? Sure. But Nintendo has a roster of well known characters that they can use and they decide to use them. I can’t really fault them for it. Plus it makes a bit more sense then Zelda Strikers. But that’s just a difference in the tone of the worlds.
Strikers isn’t an instance of Nintendo deciding to not create new IPs, but rather to brand the ones they have.
But the other argument I saw was that Mario and Zelda games are bad because they all end the same. Don’t most games end in the same place. The hero saves the vilian and defeats the final boss. Most RPG’s all hit the same general notes. To the point there have been lists complied about their clichés. Yet, games like Shadow Hearts have a much different feel then the FF series because of whats in between the massive general story cliches. And if that was broadening it to much there is the fact that back when the FF series came on multiple disks you could generally guess when the betrayal and real villain would come into power based on what disk you were in. “Hmm I’m on disk two, in the next 10 hours the current villains will be defeated/betrayed and the big bad will show themselves and my main character will have a crisis of faith.” The fact that so many of the notes are the same doesn’t diminish the fact that between games in the FF series there happens to be quite the different journey.
On the friend codes if they turn out to be game specific I’ll generally be a miffed, but this wasn’t one of the games that I care about online play for. For me the big test will be what they do with Super Smash Brothers, cause at that point they will have a big game online that will matter to a lot of people.

Hey OTAM the leaderboard won't list your friend codes because uh... that would defeat the purpose of friend codes. They are for your friends, not to be listed all over the leaderboards. You do not need friend codes to play online.

I know i'm late to the discussion, but nintendo, (though i could be wrong) has the most IPs. look at smash melee. all the trophies, items, and characters were all nintendo IPs (well most trophies). metroid, zelda, mario, kirby, dk, fzero, game & watch, fire emblem, pokemon, ice climbers, starfox, pikmin, earthbound, kid icarus, excitebike/truck, balloon fight, punchout, wave race, batallion wars, animal crossing, brain age, big brain academy, nintendogs, 1080 snowboarding, and many more that i can't find or didn't know were nintendo IPs

"I'm just wondering, everyone that complains about nintendo in every nintendo-based comment thread, what is your motivation for doing so?"
Not that I complain about nintendo all the time. But I am annoyed at the lack of games for it (and even more annoyed at the lack of games coming out in future).
Nintendo appear to be the only company doing anything other than half-assed ports with crappy use of the Wiimote (and even then, the best game I've played is a GC port). If the Wii is to survive long-term, it needs a lot more than ports with, rehashes of 10-20 year old IP (which never compelled me to buy any of their previous consoles) and mini-game after mini-game.
When the Wii manages to attract a 3rd party exclusive, I'll consider it to be a contender in the "Console War". Until then, it's just Nintendo rehashing old crap with a new control scheme.
But to answer your question: My motivation is to hopefully get Nintendo to wake up and make the most of their console. As a Wii owner, I think they're doing a piss poor job of getting content out that justifies my purchase. IMO they're also doing a poor job of getting other developers to make the most of it.
As a comparison, I've spent more on PS3 games than I did on the Wii console. Not because I can't afford to, not because the games are more expensive (they're the same price here), but because the Wii games that are being produced don't compel me to buy them. Maybe I'm not the target market? Maybe I'm too "hardcore"? Maybe I like eye candy too much? But I had high hopes for the Wii and they're yet to be realised.

"Ok, I'm sick of all you guys bashing Nintendo and the Wii.....if you really don't like it that much, freaking sell your Wii and shut up!"
No, I'm going to bitch about what I don't like about the console until somebody listens and makes the sorts of games I like. If there was a decent table tennis game for it (you listening, Rockstar Games?), I'd rush out and buy it today. The Wii has a LOT of potential (which is the ONLY reason I purchased my first Nintendo console). Put putting old Nintendo IP games on it with half-assed control schemes doesn't fulfill that potential.
For those bashing the story line of Gears, et al.
Sure, it's easy to sum them up as "man meets aliens/soldiers, man kills lots of (increasingly difficult) aliens/soldiers, end of story".
It's also easy to sum up every romance story as "boy/man meets girl/woman, both fall in love, boy/man does something totally lame/stupid/moronic/retarded/insensitive, girl/woman says she hates boy/man, boy/man goes to extraordinary lengths to win back girl/woman, girl/woman loves boy/man again, boy/man and girl/man live happily ever after". Every story ever written can be summed up in a similar way. And from what I've seen, most Nintendo games have even less story than that.
The game play vs graphics argument is always a good one. Nethack is still one of my favorite games, even though it has no story, no graphics and no sound (it's text based). But give me a version with a decent story, some good graphics, atmospheric sound, and I'd definitely buy it. While I love good game play, I also love eye candy. Game play + Eye Candy > Game Play or Eye Candy. Add some atmosphere to the mix (through good sound) and it's even better.
"This is what Mario should look like."
While that Mario certainly has a million times more character than the previous ones (including that lame movie), I don't think it really suits the IP. Although, I do wish the Wii could product graphics at that resolution.
"How are visuals secondary in a game. I hope that isn't how you drive your car, you idoit. Visual stimulation will always be first, then input."
LongshotX, try doing anything without the sense of touch. FYI: Our skin is the most sensitive organ on the human body, and the one we rely on more than anything else. Anyway, all inputs are important (including sound, which Nintendo have also neglected). I'm pissed that Nintendo didn't even bother putting previous gen 5.1 sound in the Wii. Atmospheric sound is also a huge part of what can make a game great.
"the opinions of anyone that considers themself a 'hardcore gamer' (or a 'hardcore' anything for that matter) are automatically null for me."
Well, I hope Nintendo don't have the same attitude. Otherwise, the Wii WILL bomb just as the GC did. Btw, did you know the GC sold more units than the PS2 in it's first four months? I wonder how they managed to lose the previous gen war after such a good start?
http://kotaku.com/gaming/nintendo/charticle-the-first-four-months-249629.php
"why does every consoles online support have to be equal to xbox live? that would take everything special out of xbox live. if you can play the games online, thats all that matters."
I don't have an XBox, so can't comment specifically on Live. But if it's half as good as the M$ fanbois say, both Sony and Nintendo should take a good hard look and try to emulate (or expand upon) whatever works.
Btw, before Jody or any of the other Nintendo fan-boys call me out for being a kid, I started gaming when Pong was released (yes, I'm that freakin' old). I've played games with all sorts of graphics (including quite a few text based games), but would prefer a game with good game play and good graphics over any game with one or the other. My main beef with Nintendo, is I don't think they're making the most of the Wii.

1) Catharz - your main issue with the Wii is that Nintendo aren't making the most of it? Are Sony with the PS3. Hell, are Microsoft with the 360 when it comes down to it? On of the single greatest features of the system, and the one that sets it apart from the others - Live - has been criminally neglected in the last few months.
2) I'm not gonna bother scrolling through all the comments to find it, but was it LongshotX who quoted a list of games as examples of why the Wii is 'crap', and included Worms, Castlevania and Geometry Wars - like the Wii couldn't handle those?
It seems like the main argument of the Nintendo-haters in here is that the graphics aren't as good as PS3 and 360, and the rehashing of old IPs. Nintendo were clear from the start that they were opting out of the graphics game, so we've known for nigh on 2 years this was going to be the case. And when the rehashes are as good as New Super Mario Brothers and Twilight Princess, I don't think there can really be too many complaints. Just realise which remakes aren't for you (Mario Party etc.) and DON'T PLAY THEM. Let the kids have their fun with those games and us older gamers can enjoy our Zeldas/Gears/Metroids/Crackdowns and be done with it.
Why can't we all just get along???
