Battlestar Galactica open source project is frackin' sweet
Listen up, nuggets. You're in a Colonial Viper. You've got no wingman, three inbound Cylon Heavy Raiders, and you just spotted a Basestar several klicks away. What do you do? Choose your own adventure:
The game is powered by the new and improved Freespace 2 engine, although it's entirely standalone so you don't need Freespace to play it. They've put together their own audio for the entire demo, which includes original characters, voice acting, and soundtrack pieces from Bear McCreary and Richard Gibbs (composers for the show), online multiplayer that actually works, and it's own storyline. In fact, if you haven't seen season two, you'll want to avoid the game for the spoilers.
While there aren't any Six models in here, we like what they've put together so far. Plus our favorite word "free" is sandwiched in there too. It'll give you something to do until the next season starts ... in 2008.
- Whiz your flight suit.
- Call for backup and fire up your FTL drive
- Hammer down the trigger and go for the gold

Mmm, Freespace 2 engine, downloading.
Otter @ Apr 4th 2007 10:03PM
Uhhh, Vipers don't have FTL drives.
Uglypugly @ Apr 4th 2007 10:28PM
Otter's correct, jeeze Joystiq, get your facts straight.
I for one am completely excited about this. Having played Freespace 2 alot, I have no doubts about the controls. 15 minutes and counting!

X....N...A!
Briz9 @ Apr 4th 2007 10:45PM
Tried it out, but it is too frustrating! I can't aim with my mouse. Trying to shoot something in 3D space with just the keyboard is just too hard!
Eric @ Apr 4th 2007 10:49PM
Dammit, I was thinking I was going to be the first person to point out the Viper's lack of FTL.
ShadySpace @ Apr 4th 2007 11:29PM
@Briz9
For some completely idiotic reason, mouse-usage is disabled by default. You can turn it on in the options.

Played it yesterday and it was fraking fantastic.
I went back to their homepage wondering when it was coming out and how much it would cost. And i was shocked and estacic that it's completley free!
BTW it works great with the 360 controller. Just rearange a few buttons.

Anyone else play the official Battlestar game based on the old series? I didn't like it at all, but then again, I've never watched the old TV sereis.
hobbie @ Apr 4th 2007 11:49PM

orAngeMicro @ Apr 5th 2007 12:44AM
ah, sweet! gonna have to place porn torrents on hold for the time being.
LaughingTarget @ Apr 5th 2007 7:58AM
Mouse? This game screams to break out the joystick.
Baka @ Apr 5th 2007 8:44AM
But did they implement Newtonian physics which wasn't present in Freespace 2? I guess I'll have to download it to find out.
AirIntake @ Apr 5th 2007 9:29AM
@Katie
If you're referring to the Xbox and PS2 game, it wasn't really based on the old series. It was more of a prequel to the new series. It uses the equipment from the old series to represent what Adama would have used 40 years ago in the first Cylon wars.

freespace 2 open-source engine eh ? thast the same thing the Wing commander Saga team is using. lets see how the games compare........
JD @ Apr 5th 2007 1:43PM
Nice, you're only 4 days late to the party. Nice scoop.
ackmondual @ Apr 5th 2007 5:37PM
no joystick here. At least none that's compatible w/WinXP. The old one only worked with Win98 SE, and perhaps win2k as well. Now that places like EB/GS and other retailers don't have flight sticks to demo, I'm gonna have a harder time buying a new, appropriate joystick for winXP
I'm glad I saved my X-Wing: Alliance game profile/saves, but I have yet to beat the last campaign mission. Perhaps I'll reload it and see if I can restore my progress. If it works, I'll fin that last mission bef trying out BSG.
Simon80 @ Apr 5th 2007 11:45PM
I remember that, I bought a joystick specifically to play X-Wing: Alliance, and that last mission takes about 20 minutes straight of just maneuvering through the Death Star, fun times..
Stuart @ Apr 22nd 2007 10:19PM
Well I dl'd this a few weeks ago, and let me tell you, it's definetly a blast.
The voice acting (excluding 2 cases) is incredible, and they really get the feel of the series just right.
Sadly the current Mac PPC version cannot play online.
rockhardluv4evry1 @ Apr 23rd 2007 5:08PM
Well i downloaded the demo the ova day, and played for a while and wat i saw looks promising, still got a few annoying things like i have no way to get the throttle workin on my joystick, ne got a tip? but i enjoyd, cnt wait for it to be finished
