Yesterday, over on Bungie.net, they put up a little warning post to current Halo 2 players stating that they were adding new servers and that some game stats may get lost during the work. They then went on to say that these shiny new servers will also be running and logging all of our future Halo 3 beta and Halo 3 fun. But wait, did you just read that? Bungie is adding brand new game servers that'll support the Halo 3 beta! Holy cow! That means the Halo 3 beta will be releasing in like weeks, no days ... wait, minutes or even seconds! Or not, because soon after the servers went live Bungie updated their post by saying that, "this was just a routine server upgrade, similar to when we upgraded the web servers a couple weeks ago, and isn't a hint of imminent changes in the beta status". So, we guess the new servers aren't official confirmation of anything beta related. It was just our inner fanboys yearning for Halo 3 beta news and nothing more than that. What a sobering thought.

I agree, they seem to be getting to a point in time where either the beta will be 1-2 weeks long or they're going to run into a wall with how much they can fix/upgrade/change before the game goes gold.
I would not be terribly surprised if the beta was VERY short. They know the max load on their servers will be the first few days and I assume that's most, if not all, of the data they need. After that there would be no reason to continue allowing people to play it.

Also, sorry for going OT, but why does my name at the end of the comments display as "John" instead of "dan s."? It changed when they introduced the password system.

this is getting rediculous.
It's a BETA. Why be all secretive and lame about this?
i mean i know bungie gets off by putting their fans in suspense, but this is just a beta, why mess with us? the game will be out in half a year, i can guarentee they know the date(or at least the week) the beta will start, why hold back?
i mean hell, how many times are tentative dates set and broken in this industry? just give use a general date, a 3 month out of the next 8 as a window is lame.
not to meantion the lack of ANY screen caps is pointless(besides like 3 or 4 non-final ones), because the day the beta opens, the interweb will be more cram packed with screen caps and videos than any one person could watch.
I can understand Bungie's secrecy in the past, but this time they are having a public beta, and they are treating it like the launch of the actual game.

All this hype just for the beta. Bungie better deliver the best game ever produced or it will be a huge let-down.

I'm in complete agreement. Why not give us the week it comes out, if not the exact date? What do you have to lose? It's mind boggling ><

Don't be silly - there's no real "Beta" with Halo 3. What they're calling a Beta is nothing more than a server load test and publicity stunt that will be done a month or so before the games comes out. Don't be surprised if this "Beta" only last three days.
As far as not having it sooner - people have already stated the reason. The moment they have the Beta the web is going to be full of YouTube movies, screenshots, et cetera - they're not going to show the game until something impressive is there to show.
