Jack Thompson's further Florida Bar issues
The day of reckoning for Jack Thompson approaches ever so slowly -- looks like somebody needs a luck dragon. Separately from another disciplinary hearing brought by the Florida Bar based on issues of misconduct, Thompson could be in trouble with the Florida Bar again over complaints filed by the judge from last year's Bully suit. The Florida Supreme Court has assigned a Miami judge for trial and if the complaints by the judge are upheld Thompson would face professional sanctions. The complaints brought by Judge Ronald Friedman were based on Thompson's conduct during the Bully trial. The Bar believes Thompson lashed out against Friedman during the trial making statements with "a reckless disregard as to [their] truth." The Bar points to statements made in the 15-page complaint which include gems from Thompson like, "Here's a tip, Judge, I don't practice law. I save lives from reckless jurists like you." And about the game Bully, Thompson says to Friedman, "You missed the gay sex ... I'm sure the voters are going to love that. Go ahead, Judge. File your bar complaint. Make my day."
It's no secret at this point the Thompson's grip on reality is slipping. It seems the Florida Bar is looking to shut him down before he embarrasses the profession further. There is no word yet how this will affect Thompson's lawsuit to stop Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV from hitting store shelves.

Well if he "doesn't practice law," then he should have no problem with being disbarred.

I hope after he's disbarred the courts can start disbarring people who sue over stubbing their toes and other frivolous bullshit.

I don't just want to see Thompson disbarred, I want to see one of the biggies (R*?) counter-sue him into penury. I want to drive the whole way to Florida (from Maryland, no less) just to order a Big Mac meal with extra pickles from this asshole, then tell him he fucked up the order.

The big question is, can his wife bail him out this time?

It seems like Florida and California are the only states with more arrogant, bottom-feeding, scumbag lawyers than my good ol' Washington, DC.

"You cannot save us." Empress
"What? I beat off (Nothing's wolf minion)! And it means I've failed. That the world is doomed!"

You have to admit that the gaming industry is full of people who are out of touch like Itagaki, top Sony execs, Stefan Eriksson, Take-Two people, etc. Even the gamers themselves seem out of touch with reality at times (especially from that "I hear GTA" kid). And it truly would not be too difficult to successfully manage "games are bad" campaign with so many impressionable parents everywhere.
But it really doesn't matter if the biggest nemesis to the industry can only amount to one Jack Thompson. The only amazing thing about Jack Thompson would be how this tick of a person got a law degree.
REUYL @ Apr 5th 2007 12:36AM

I'm at a loss for words, hvnlysoldr. That was... magnificent.

Jack Thompson is to the video game industry what JC Webster III (C.L.A.M.P. Founder) is to Art Bell.

Wow, I can't believe they haven't thrown out his suit w/ R* yet. He sounds like a raving lunatic.
Lono @ Apr 5th 2007 1:10AM
LK: the crazy thing is that he got his law degree at Vanderbilt, which is a very good school. That means, at one time, before he went crazy, he was a smart man.

ARGH! I swear to God if I ever find the bitch who records those fucking obnoxious ads, I'd going to...to...do SOMETHING HORRIBLE to her!
Friggin' hate that shit! Hate hate hate!
Oh, right, and it must really suck to be a right wing crazy these days....After decades of telling people how great it would be if conservatives were REALLY in charge, how much better America would be. And when you finally got just that...
...the entire world, furthermore America, plunge straight into hell thanks to your philosophy and policies.
I love it, though! And seeing self righteous pricks like Jack Thompson being backfired upon just makes it all the sweeter.
Dustin @ Apr 5th 2007 1:54AM
Though I seriously hope that the disbarment of Jerk Thompson happens, I doubt it will curb his tenacity. He'll find some way to be a thorn in the side of humanity in general. He'll probably be a lobbyist or a political consultant. You guys should really see his track record: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Thompson_%28attorney%29
What a piece of work. He really embarasses the Florida legal system, and has done so for FAR too long. Bye, bye Tack Jompson.
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 7:23AM
You know, it's considered bad form to talk about this guy. Do us all a favour and let him kill Take-Two in peace.

Anyone know if the Bar Association is anything like the AICPA? When someone loses their CPA, they get banned from getting a CPA from any state and get their name written up in a specially taken out ad in the Wall Street Journal, basically telling the entire business world you just lost your CPA. Does the Bar do this, or can he still go out and get another one in, say, Commiefornia?
32_Footsteps @ Apr 5th 2007 8:25AM
And if Commiefornia really existed, we might figure out if he could get on the Bar there.
From what I understand, the various state Bar associations don't quite work like that - but they do communicate, and if someone gets disbarred in one state and tries to pass it in another, it's extraordinarily difficult to pass. From what I understand, the more frequently the new sate and the old cooperate on various issues of jurisprudence, the less likely it is they'll accept the disbarred member.
I'd anticipate a disbarred Thompson would try something like Wyoming or Oklahoma if he couldn't practice in Florida anymore.
Ryan LN @ Apr 5th 2007 8:55AM
If Jack is disbarred in Florida, he will not be permitted to practice law in any other jurisdiction during the time of his suspension. Let's say you're admitted to practice law in State A. In order to practice law in States B, C, & D you have to either be admitted to the bar there or be admitted on a temporary basis (something called pro hoc vice). In order to do either of these things you have to represent that you are a member in good standing of some other state bar... which he won't be able to do. I really think the dude must be mentally ill- our canons of ethics and the code of professional responsibility look upon criticizing a sitting judge very unfavorably... and when nobody likes you to begin with, I can't imagine how he could have possibly thought that this was a good idea. It seems that whatever's coming to him he's had coming for a long, long time.

I wonder if Jack will stop by here today to enlighten us with why this is actually the stupidest thing the Florida bar could ever do (and demons will be upon them). That seems to be the style of his comebacks.
32_Footsteps @ Apr 5th 2007 9:34AM
AirIntake - Hmm... plan one's defense against professional ruination, or get into a flame war with video gamers based purely on overconfidence?
I know which I'd pick, and it's conveniently the one I don't think Thompson will pick.
Prof_Chaos @ Apr 5th 2007 10:54AM
I'm not sure if Jack being disbarred would be a good thing. If he is, he'll just become a lobbyist and deal directly with politicians and through the media. Basically it will be business as usual without him trying the lawsuits. In fact, I'm sure he could just find other lawyers to try the cases and just try the case in the media without fear of reprisals from bar associations or his colleagues.
