Resident Evil 4 on Wii official, Umbrella Chronicles an on-rails shooter
An intrepid NeoGAF member translated the info from the most recent issue of the Japanese magazine. The new version (presumably the unannounced game that Capcom hinted at last month) uses the Wiimote for aiming, naturally, but also uses it for stabbing zombies, as God intended. There's no word yet on whether or not it will reach North America, but a listing for the game briefly appeared on Gamestop's site, and the thing's already been localized once, so it would seem like a lock.
The scans say that the game will also include a trailer for Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles which we know is due out before the end of 2007. Also, the Gamestop listing had the game set for June 25, so maybe you'll be whiling the summer days away holed up, slashing zombies -- suntan be damned!
Speaking of Umbrella Chronicles, the same scans report the game will be an on-rails shooter that will reveal the fall of the Umbrella Corporation. Chris, Jill, Rebecca, and Albert Wesker will return for the game, all in glorious 480p widescreen.
Yikes, do you hear that sort of low, groaning noise? Oh, it's all the people who bought Resident Evil: Dead Aim. Don't worry you guys, there's no indication that the two are directly linked, save for both being Resident Evil games in first-person perspective. With Capcom Day set for April 12, more information on both titles will likely be on the way soon.

hate on the wii all you want, but you have to admit stabbing zombies with the wiimote sounds awesome.
ShaleX @ Apr 4th 2007 2:08PM
Uhm, what do you mean, I just beat Resident Evil 4 on my Wii last month... why would I do that again?
blackace @ Apr 4th 2007 10:36AM
They forgot about the pc version that is coming out, that makes 4 versions of re4 a fanatic could have I wonder what bonuses the wii version will offer?
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 4th 2007 10:36AM
Easy way to make money off a alredy created game by just adding the Wiimote controls.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 4th 2007 10:37AM
this makes me glad I have held off on re4 for gc for this long.
vidGuy @ Apr 4th 2007 10:41AM
An on-rails shooter can be fun, but it's nothing like what I was hoping for from Umbrella Chronicles. That feels like a cheap cop-out.
As far as RE4, that's a natural fit for the Wii-mote but I'm not paying $30 for a game I've already played.
comtar @ Apr 4th 2007 10:41AM
I will buy RE4 for the Wii if it includes all the extra material from the PS2 version. As much as I loved RE4 and wanted to check out the extra stuff on the PS2 version, I couldn't get over how bad some of the areas looked compared to the Gamecube version, especially some of the lava areas. I also don't understand why RE4's darkest color was grey... seemed the Gamecube version was alot darker and colorful.
Darkness @ Apr 4th 2007 10:41AM
I don't think that RE:Umbrella Chronicles is an on-rails shooter. It has some first person parts to it, but that's not the whole game.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 4th 2007 10:41AM
If I worked at Capcom I would have done the same thing. If won't take much time to adjust the controls and port it to the Wii. The profits will be crazy. Someone over at Capcom will be wiping thier ass with $100 bills.
Ibere @ Apr 4th 2007 10:43AM
RE4 for Wii is good news if:
- It has all bonus content from GC and PS2 versions.
- It has exclusive content.
- They make the remote work well (when I played the PS2 version I always thought it would be uber cool to use the wiimote for the aim... I really hope it workls).
- This is wishifull thinking, but it would be good if they upgraded the graphs in order to finally show the Wii can display better graphics than the Game Cube.
Flit @ Apr 4th 2007 10:45AM
Agree with everything said here: This needs the extra stuff from the shitty ps2 version (minus the hideous graphics).
I hope the difficulty is amped up a bit too, since aiming was mostly what caused the difficulty in the first game.
Loore @ Apr 4th 2007 10:48AM
Oh man, RE4.1... now with waggle controls... lol
Chaching, Chaching! .. is this what Reggie had in mind when he boasted about third party support for the Wii.. constant stream of ports of old games with tacked on waggle controls. And, the Wii version better at least look better.. god help that it doesnt look worse (which could happen if they are porting the PS2 code).
And, wtf with on rails shooters for RE-UC.. what does Capcom take the Wii demogrpahic for? They're hardcore dont they know that.
Virtua Fanboy @ Apr 4th 2007 10:51AM
I have played RE4 yet. But I also don't own a Nintendo Wii. (I'm not gonna say, "I don't have a Wii." lol)
Not hating but don't kid yourselves, this is just a way to make a quick buck so they are'nt gonna improve the graphics that much.
I was excited a few years ago when they did something like this and released RE2 and RE3 on the Dreamcast but this is different for reasons that are obvious.
Demaar @ Apr 4th 2007 10:51AM
Hope UC flops. Certainly no the direction I want the franchise to go in. Seriously, wtf Capcom, you have a perfectly good engine there with RE4's remake. Why not use it for the new title as well?

I've been hoping for a House of the Dead game for the Wii for a while...I guess Umbrella Chronicles would be the next best thing...though I've heard that previous RE shooting games weren't...uh...good.
ck @ Apr 4th 2007 10:57AM
I can't imagine they would make Umbrella Chronicles strictly an on-rails shooter. Can you imagine playing 6-10 hours of a game like that? No, I think Capcom is smarter and that's only part of the game. I'm sure we'll be hearing more details soon about this game, so it's best not to judge so harshly now.
FrunkTheCrunk @ Apr 4th 2007 11:00AM
I think it's time to dump the Wii.
With it's outdated graphics, good games are better played on the real next gen systems.

Come on Loore, you don't actually want the Wii version to look better. You really really want it too look as shitty as possible, so that you can feel a little more secure in whatever delusional paradise you live in.
Draco @ Apr 4th 2007 11:04AM
Neal.
Did you just compaire two gamecube games to tell us that the Wii has better graphics?
JodyAnthony @ Apr 4th 2007 11:04AM
yeah because nintendo is the one rereleasing resident evil 4. certainly not capcom, the creators of the game.
tactics @ Apr 4th 2007 11:05AM
i won't be buying it, but an on-rails shooter makes sense for the non-gaming demographic. it's like a playable horror movie.
people don't seem to want to accept that the wii is here to get non-gamers into gaming. accept it.
it's baby steps. first we get "dad" playing an RE4 on-rails shooter, then he graduates to a slightly more complex game later, then he's playing zelda, then he's a new hardcore gamer. probably about half of nintendos "non-gamers" will eventually buy regular games for the wii, we just have to give it time. until then, just let go of what you've always known about videogames, and start over a little. if you need a hardcore gaming fix, play one of the more complex games for wii, or play something on another system.
-"superfan" tactics.
RUSKULL @ Apr 4th 2007 11:08AM

oh, and don't forget, Capcom milks their franchises all the time. How many Street Fighter 2 versions came out during it's history?
nate @ Apr 4th 2007 11:09AM

Guys stop bitching about the rail system. HELLO!!! I know must if not all of you have played one or all versions of House Of The Dead. That rail based games was off the hook... hell me and my friend finished a bag of free tokens on it.
We all know Capcom for making great games for the RE franchise (and others). I have no doubt in my mind that this will have the same, if not more, fun factor that House of the Dead series gave us in the arcade. Plus remember that GUN attachment for Wiimote that was shown at the last E3 2006... now it come into play SWEET!!!. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE TRAILER.I already own RE4 and don't see a real benefit for me to get the Wii edition...so i will pass on that one.
We the hardcore games have been asking when the more mature serious games were coming to the Wii.... now we are starting to get some real positive information. It seem the second half of 2007 will bring us a few gems. MP3, RE, Project Hammer, Sadness and others will drive Wii sales into 2008.
nate @ Apr 4th 2007 11:12AM
same goes for Draco who thought he actually is comparing 2 gamecube games...
Champloo @ Apr 4th 2007 11:16AM
I agree with Ibere 100%. And it would be nice if they tweaked the graphics to show off the Wii's true power. A lot of early Wii games graphics have been less-than GameCube quality, which is odd, but it happens on every system with launch titles. It takes a while for the developers to get used to the engine.
And Neal, Twilight Princess is a beautiful game, I certainly thought so, but it's still just GameCube level graphics (which as we know can be great), as it is only a port of an excellent looking GameCube game, on the Wii, no graphical enhancements were made. We can't merely stand still in time saying Twilight Princess was good enough graphically, it was great, but progress needs to be made beyond that.
However that's still not the Wii living up to its' true graphical potential. All that Ibere is really saying is that he wants to see an RE4 Wii version take advantage of the extra power over the GameCube. RE4 on the GC had fantastic graphics, but that was last generation and the Wii can do better.
I have no doubt in my mind this port/remake will make use of the Wiimote in the best possible ways. It's just a hunch. I'm not exactly what one would call an "RE fan", but this is actually something I've been thinking about and hoping for since the Wii was announced.
Also, on the topic of RE: Umbrella Chronicles, I personally believe this is a miscommunication. I've seen early screen shots and everything points to this being no different than any other RE game (except story-wise), except for the fact that it would use shooter "elements" to better incorporate the Wiimote into the gameplay.
sheppy @ Apr 4th 2007 11:17AM
I'll be passing on RE4 but this has to be said... WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH AN ON RAILS SHOOTER?!? Wii begs for it, Rayman: Raving Rabbits highlighted the glory of a Wiicentric rails shooter. The idea of an RE based Rail Shooter is the best news since House Of The Dead 4.
Finn @ Apr 4th 2007 11:17AM
"Dude, the magazine says it's a rail shooter. And as for Capcom being smarter, they did release Dead Aim, so..."
o you read japanese?
I'm reading the neo-gaf forum right now, and nowhere does it say "on rails"

"so who all here thinks this rereleasing of re4 is capcom/nintendo/whatever is terrible, but think the rerelease of guitar hero 2 on xbox 360 was wonderful?"
Guitar Hero 2 for 360 incorporated Live, New/More songs, wireless guitar, effects pedal.
Resident Evil 4 Wii - PS2 & Gcub Content with waggle controls.
Guitar Hero 2 for 360 added tons more + (its new game)!
"Go eat a billygoat, troll. Never a more obvious troll statement been made.... well, perhaps, but come on man."
Truth hurts.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 4th 2007 11:24AM
so jack, you know everything that is going to be added to this re4 port before anyone else does? where did you get the information that all the game will be is the gamecube game with wii remote controls?
religiousjedi @ Apr 4th 2007 11:30AM
RE4 is getting the Twilight Princess treatment from me...
Bought it!
Plaid Ninja @ Apr 4th 2007 11:24AM
Constant aiming with the remote might get tiring. I'd be more excited about a high definition XBox 360 port.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 4th 2007 11:25AM
also guitar hero 2 is a new game in the same way street fighter 2 turbo is a new game from street fighter 2. its still just things added on to an old game.

Good ole Gamestop. I can imagine there was a week or so back in March when "Mushroom Kingdom Hearts" was in their system.

I must be of the past, then, because I love a good on rails shooter. I don't want control for the sake of control. GTA3 bored me to tears but I went all the way through Dead to Rights. A well-made Wiimote driven RE shooter is bound to get lots of play from me.
Slaziman @ Apr 4th 2007 11:27AM

They can't drop Blu-Ray, that would make the PSTriple Blu-Rayless Edition incompatible with every "regular" PSTriple game!!!
I'm pretty sure you meant RE:UC and not RE4, right?
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Apr 4th 2007 11:28AM
Jack: The truth is you're a troll with too much free time at work. I don't begrudge you for annoying fanboy morons to pass the time, but at least OWN it when someone calls you on it.
Loore @ Apr 4th 2007 11:29AM
RE Chronicles with on-rails is a step BACKWARDS for the RE franchise.. where is the sense of exploration, or getting creeped out as you enter a house with zombies inside, or running from zombies as they chase you down. All gone!
It also takes a lot of the strategy away.. can you imagine the boss battles.. just point and click at the flashing weak points. Yay! Thats soooo 1990's.. what about dodging attacks for using the environment?
Its basically a dumbed down version of RE.. specifically for the Wii demographic. Meanwhile PS3 and 360 get a proper RE game instead of this mini-game crapo.
Lame! This is NintenLame!
