Major Nelson teases new Dashboard details on Xbox 360 Fancast

Now the good news: Major says (at around 0:40:30) that the update will include "simple things that I've been asking for since launch." 360 Fanboy put their thinking caps on and came up with a pretty convincing guess. Adding some "Play Game" verbiage to determine what game is in the drive is a feature that Major's been vocal about and, they remind us, early Dashboard screenshots (like the one pictures above) included this functionality. It's been a long time coming, so let's hope it is coming.

What's with the excitement over such a trivial feature?
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 11:44AM
It's their own feature
shase @ Apr 5th 2007 11:45AM
@1
Maybe its a distraction from the negative news on the "Elite" and 180$ HD
Red Arrow @ Apr 5th 2007 11:45AM
I really hope that is not the main highlight of the new features. I mean if I wanted to know what game was in the console I would eject the DVD drive....or more than likey I will remember what the last game I played was.
Brent @ Apr 5th 2007 11:55AM
Yippee for new features that should have been included from day 1.
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 11:56AM
cha-ching! they love your money.
Dark_Jedi @ Apr 5th 2007 12:04PM
Can they just update the BC list already?
Jake @ Apr 5th 2007 12:09PM

It is hard for me to get that worked up about some new, optional, overpriced accessory that is only truly necessary for downloading video that also costs money. It doesn't change what I already have for a system, which is a badass gaming monster.
Almost all omfg posts I've seen on Joystiq about the Elite are from notorious PS3 and Wii fanboys. Their opinions on a system they hate and regularly bash are obviously biased.
Dolla Dolla @ Apr 5th 2007 12:13PM
Compared to the price of the 120gb drive (180), and the difference between the Premium and Elite(price difference=80, additional 100gb plus HDMI), the Elite is a good deal.
MaulerX @ Apr 5th 2007 12:13PM
Nice.
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 12:16PM
Of course in no time they'll release games that are 'Elite exclusive' which means you have to waste more money.
Kizzle @ Apr 5th 2007 12:22PM
"Of course in no time they'll release games that are 'Elite exclusive' which means you have to waste more money."
You clearly know nothing. Stop posting immediately.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 5th 2007 12:22PM
I cant wait until the elite is out for a few months, then I can probably get a core or premium for cheaper and make my trifecta of gaming goodness complete.
Blackheart @ Apr 5th 2007 12:24PM
Lame. Add a farking browser already.

If you want a browser, use the computer you are on now. Browsers on gaming systems are worthless.
Jebus Crust @ Apr 5th 2007 12:37PM
This is off subject but I cannot stand Microsoft playing the choice card and that they do no "force" you to buy something that you do not need/or want.
No, they are right. What they do instead is nickel and dime you to death.
Choice
Mr. Moore...stop looking at your "guns" for a moment and read this....
I can choose what bluetooth headset I want to use.
I can choose what kind of wired USB or wireless bluetooth keyboard and mouse I want to use.
I can choose to put in any SATA 2.5" hard disc that I want to use.
I can choose to what USB camera I want to use.
I can choose to put in another OS if I want to.
I can choose to watch HD "native resolution" not compressed HD.
I can choose to watch these movies on a completely digital HDMI cable not a component cable which goes from digital to analog to digital. I can have this HDMI interface without having to shell out another $480
I can choose to leave my system on 24/7 and NOT worry about it overheating and/or breaking.
I can choose to put MP3's, digital foto's, MP4's, AVC, AAC, etc. on my hard disc.
I can charge my controller without having to pay an extra $20 for a cable. (a little of subject but I wanted to throw it in)
I can choose to use WiFi without paying an extra $100.
I can choose to browse the internet on Sony's browser or on Linux using a different browser for example Opera's browser.
By having these choices I can find the lowest price or the best value or the best quality on my won and I am not stuck with using one choice of headset, hard drive, camera, etc.
So, I ask you....
Who has more choice?
Blackheart @ Apr 5th 2007 12:38PM
it's a minor convenience thing that the other consoles this generation have. there's no reason why the 360 should not have this.
h0mi @ Apr 5th 2007 12:39PM
right, because there are so many premium only 360 games....
Jebus Crust @ Apr 5th 2007 12:40PM
One more choice...
I can choose to put on my hard drive whatever I want...I am not limited to only being able to put stuff that I have to buy from Microsoft's marketplace.
Boss Tempo @ Apr 5th 2007 12:42PM
I'm sorry Seedy but all 4 of your posts so far have been completely asinine. Take your riddlin boy! There's not one single xbox owner who thinks they're getting ripped off or believes MS is just robbing us of our money. Why do you think so many people spend their money on everything MS puts out? Cuase it rocks balls, that's why. Much better than what you're paying for on the other 2, except the wii, which is a cute little toy and nothing more.
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 12:48PM
@16 Of course that's what they're up to.
This hardware revision of theirs will render the white one obsolete and will only burden them if they were going to support it. It would be like an embarrassing mess they just want to leave behind.
Sengoku @ Apr 5th 2007 12:55PM
I for one would love to see the ability to power down the USB ports (or some of them) when the console powers down. I use an external hard drive for music, and it's aggravating both to see the light on the drive constantly, and to know that it's wasting my electric, just because the 360 won't power that port down when it shuts down.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Apr 5th 2007 12:56PM
Any chance you douchebags can keep the discussion on topic for a while. This is a nice feature that a FREE update is going to provide. Unless my reading comprehension is rusty, this has nothing to do with new hard drives or "Elite" models. Ass.
Rob Holiday @ Apr 5th 2007 12:57PM
I know it's a very small issue... But I've been asking for that feature since the 360 came out. I could never understand why it said 'Play Game' instead of what game was in the drive. I hate having to open the drive just to see what game is in it.
Vidikron @ Apr 5th 2007 1:02PM
I've never really thought about that since I've never not known what game was in the drive, but it really is something that should have been there since day one. It's also odd that that feature was in pre-release version of the dashboard, but later removed. What the hell kind of sense does that make?
JodyAnthony @ Apr 5th 2007 1:07PM
it might seem like a pointless update, but if you havent played for a few days or a week or something this type of thing could come in handy. Hell if the DS can tell you what game is in the slot, the 360 should be able to tell you what game is in the drive.
Watership @ Apr 5th 2007 1:31PM
Jebus Crust:
You're delusional. This isn't a PC platform where the hardware is all out of wack and all over the place for each user. This is CONSOLE GAMING. Everyone has the same interface, controller, and software versions. Things run smoother, things are easier, and more fun is had.
Jake @ Apr 5th 2007 1:33PM
Jebus Christ,
Your post was very long and off topic. The PS3 seems to allow you more choices, other than having to pay for Wi-fi and Bluray and having to wait an extra year.
But, to counter your "choices" arguement, I will only submit these two links. I will get a PS3 when it has more choices.

Jack of No Trades @ Apr 5th 2007 1:57PM
The PS3 is a great machine the has a vast amount of features. When the games arrive it will be a juggernaut.
The 360 earns equal respect in my eyes with its great selection of games and online components.
Everyone knows my opinion on the Wii. It will fade out.
Jebus Crust @ Apr 5th 2007 2:04PM
@29 when did I say it was a PC? My main point was that I am not stuck with bad quality accessories, ie the crackly, terrible sounding Xbox360 headset for starters.
@30,31 your game score pages are irrelevant. Of, course the 360 will have more choices and better software, it has been out since Nov. 05. If you want it to be more accurate, let's do this in a year from now. Or, let us look at the first 4 months of the 360's great games.
I would bet that the first 4 months of the PS3 against the first 4 months of the 360 anyday. At least that is my opinion.
If you are happy about getting nickeled and dimed to death and being bent over for every piece of content that you want to put on your 360...then so be it.
I am happy knowing that the games that are really going to start pushing the next(now) gen envelope are just around the corner...and I will be nickel and dimed to death.
That is why I spent the $600...and no more.
That is also why for the same or comparable machine you must spend 700+
Have fun...and don't forget the lube...I hear Peter can be pretty ruff sometimes.
Jebus Crust @ Apr 5th 2007 2:06PM

Man, I wish to God that the PS3 came out with some decent games so all the fucking Sony trolls would be too busy playing to keep assaulting their ridiculous anti-MS propaganda.
NEWSFLASH IDIOTS: This is an article for people who own/care about 360. If you aren't one of those people, fuck off and go back to playing Talladega Nights. I, for one, welcome this simple but necessary update to my system's OS and I'm sure the other 360 owners do too.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 5th 2007 2:18PM
Jebus Crust
You need to realize that the 360 is superior at graphics and AI. The games will come to the PS3 but any cross-platform games will look better and play better on the 360. I have both 360 and PS3.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Apr 5th 2007 2:20PM
Jebus-
Wrong thread douchebag. Get off of your soap box and haul it to a blog where someone might give a rat's ass.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 5th 2007 2:35PM
PS3: Motorstorm rocks (still cant decide if I like motorstorm or excite truck more..), but needs more games. Otherwise the console has the potential to get pretty awesome. (not a fan of FPS, so resistance means nothing to me)
360: I wish some of the hardware problems would get ironed out. Will be picking one up when eternal sonata hits, most likely.
Wii: a total blast, probably my favorite console since snes. just needs some more single-player story driven games. will not fade out no matter what people may think.
Jebus Crust @ Apr 5th 2007 2:40PM
Normally I do not post on these threads. One poster who frequents PS3fanboy...calls himself Mistercommonsence posts the most idiodic anti-sony stuff you can imagine.
So, I decided that I would dish out a little of my own...but at the same time use relavent facts and arguements unlike Mistercommonsence.
However, I do beleive that you Microsoft Bill Gates fanboys are the ones who are getting shafted. By the fall of 07 the PS3 will really be coming into it's own and your 360 (how many have you gone thru, just curious) will look even more dated with it's slapped 2gether parts from all over the place.
Spread'em Xbot's
Bill and Peter need some luvin. And more and more of your $$$$$$$$$$$
Tootles Nuttchuggers
PS...fun this is.....hhmmnn?
Vidikron @ Apr 5th 2007 2:48PM
I actually agree with Jebus Crust to an extent. I like the non-proprietary nature of the PS3. It means I don't have to wait for an official upgrade and then spend $180 buy a new hard drive. I can do it at any time with any size off-the-shelf drive I want. Though I have no idea what any of this has to do with the news item.
Seedy @ Apr 5th 2007 2:56PM
There's no point to this xbox vs pc argument since the xbox will be dropped to concentrate on a future version of windows anyway. Gamers on Microsoft platforms will unite. It'll work out fine for the lot of you.
Allister Howe @ Apr 5th 2007 3:06PM
Cool. Any update is good for me. I just hope we get another BC update, and maybe an update for the HD-DVD drive with better compatability (Less problems on certain discs).
Stupidiot @ Apr 5th 2007 3:34PM
Hooray! Fanboy wars! For once I'm going to get involved, and help keep these comments off-topic.
For starters, I own a 360, a Wii, and obviously a computer (and numerous other games consoles that I can't be bothered to mention) for games. At the moment I spend most of my time playing PC games, but if I had to be a fanboy, I would consider myself an Xbox 360 fanboy. Now, what people like Jebus Crust do not understand is that the whole choice thing thing with the xbox 360 works for people like me. At the moment I do not own an HDTV, but this doesn't worry me hugely, as long as I get to play the latest fun games, therefore I have no interest in having a HDDVD/Blu-ray drive (I'm not a huge film fanatic or anything). Also, I have been using a wireless ethernet bridge for my xbox live solution since the first xbox, so having integrated wifi does not concern me, especially when you consider that the bridge would then be sitting around doing nothing. Currently I'm feeling too lazy to come up with any other arguments which haven't already been used a million times before, so I'm going to cut this short here.
Mark Felps @ Apr 5th 2007 3:59PM
Personally, my favorite choice on the PS3 is when I choose to spin around in circles because the bluetooth is poorly implemented. That is living.
sy kane @ Apr 5th 2007 4:08PM
Jebus (jesus Christ man!!)
Listen, I own the 360 premium bought it. have the memory card, play and charge kit and 2 games (GOW, Viva Pinata). all of that was cheaper than the cheaper ps3 mind you... ohh forgot got a wifi also on my 360. I chose to buy all of that... still cheaper than basic ps3. Anyway to stay on topic! i cant wait for this feature, about time.
P.S. do you have a choice NOT to have Blu ray for the extra $200?
anon @ Apr 5th 2007 4:12PM
How about .. private chats with more than one person?
It's frustrating having to switch back and forth just to set up a chat with two other people. Also, the "play game" thing is a horrible guess. If a big fuss was made about that it's pathetic.
Patrick @ Apr 5th 2007 4:30PM
hey jebus, getting nickeled and dime to death. because when the put a new piece of content up on marketplace, i must buy it, its not at all possible to stream from my massive catalog on my pc. and speaking of crappy accessories, hows that weightless controller doin for ya? i didnt want to be an ass today, but you made me
Jake @ Apr 5th 2007 4:43PM
Jebus,
The 360 had more good games in its first 4 months than the PS3, despite the PS3 having an extra year to prepare. COD2, PGR2, and GRAW are all rated higher than every PS3 game, except Oblivion, and were availabe this time last year.
see for yourself
http://www.metacritic.com/games/ps3/scores/
http://www.metacritic.com/games/xbox360/scores/
The 360 was available a full year earlier and I had an HDTV. I got one and am extremely happy with it. I will get a PS3 eventually, but it isn't necessary to have yet because I have a 360. The PS3 has great hardware but seriously lacks games. Motorstorm and Resistance mainly seem so great because you don't have any other choices. Though I do really like Resistance.
Miles @ Apr 5th 2007 4:57PM
Anon you rule. I wanted that feature since day one. The only problem i really see in having it, is cheating . Lets say if certain future games implement the Counter-Strike style of dying . Your dead teammates could then become free roaming cameras to tell you where the enemy was. Maybe if certain games could disable the chat it would be ok .
losttoys @ Apr 5th 2007 5:26PM
Jake -
So I grabbed all of the titles which have received a score of 80 percent or higher since the release of the each system from its launch to today's date (2006 for Xbox 360). So here are the games for each system within this "launch period".
Xbox 360
1 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The 2006 94
2 Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2006 90
3 Call of Duty 2 2005 90
4 Burnout Revenge 2006 89
5 Project Gotham Racing 3 2005 88
6 Fight Night Round 3 2006 86
7 Dead or Alive 4 2005 85
8 Need for Speed Most Wanted 2005 83
9 Condemned: Criminal Origins 2005 81
10 Table Tennis 2006 81
12 NBA 2K6 2005 81
13 Perfect Dark Zero 2005 81
14 Peter Jackson's King Kong 2005 80
PS3
1 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The 2007 93
2 Resistance: Fall of Man 2006 87
3 Virtua Fighter 5 2007 85
4 MotorStorm (JPN Import Version) 2006 84
5 Fight Night Round 3 2006 84
6 MotorStorm 2007 82
7 Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection 2007 82
8 NBA Street Homecourt 2007 81
9 College Hoops 2K7 2007 81
10 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 2006 81
11 NBA 2K7 2006 81
12 Virtua Tennis 3 2007 80
13 Call of Duty 3 2006 80
Now before you say it, yes, this is unfair. Many of the titles for the PS3 are cross platform. However, the argument is about "good games" within the "launch period". The games on the PS3 are launch games.
