Myself and 2 of my other friends at work just all lost ours to the ring of death with in 2 weeks of each other. We got them in different locations too. How we were able to slide in the 3% range I have no idea within our small group. I guess I should start buying lottary tickets with the luck we are having.

Doesnt seem like MS is "greatly fibbing" - in fact, the 3% rate is probably not much lower than the actual (maybe 6-8%), though thats still high
For instance, with 10mn units 3% = 300,000 defective consoles which seems close.
--- With a 3% defect rate there is a 1 in 5000 chance of a single person getting seven defective units (on the current install base of 10 million)
--- With a 6% defect rate the chances are 1 in 35
--- With a 12% defect rate you should see 3-4 such cases on a 10 million install base

Microsoft has been smoke and mirrors about the success (fake success) of the 10,000,000 consoles they claim to have sold. In speaking to an employee from best buy; I was told that they count xbox 360's as new sold units (this came directly from management) What a scam!!!!!!!!!! I demand a recount!!!!!! Microsoft is pulling a George Bush (rigged numbers to win)

Secondly, this red ring of death has definitley affected close to 50 percent of all units in circulation (refurbs and new replacements) if not more; Everyone with an xbox 360 has either experienced or heard about the Red Ring of death.
Some have experienced it 7x; the average for most who play their systems regularly is 6x.

Microsoft needs to own up and stop rigging the numbers. They are losing this console war badly and inflated numbers last but for so long.
Someone should step up and initiate a class action lawsuit for the red ring of death issue.

Its funny how microsoft always manages to have an issue that captures a catchy name for a fatal error. Like the "Blue Screen of Death" for Windows XP.

I don't doubt that many 360s die, BUT, the red ring of "death" alos happens when the connection of the AV cables isnt hooked up.

I thought I had the red ring that day, turned out it wasnt plugged in all the way.

I have a feeling a lot of people jump the gun and think there console is bad, when its simply not plugged in.

I wonder how big the deffect issue really is. To me a big problem with it is that Microsoft provided a convenient symbol to associate with a broken 360. In this day in age with so many people blogging, its so easy to talk about the "ring of death," I mean honestly, its damn catchy. One day I really want Microsoft to provide the real deffect rate data. The rate may not be all that abnormally high, its just that its not catchy to say "my console is broken" and so word wouldn't have spread quite as much in previous generations or on other consoles.

I don't think people are lying about their consoles being broken, though I do think the ones that get 7 deffective units just don't know how to take care of their 360. I have a launch 360, often used, never broken. I'd just really like to know how big the issue is, and if the bigger problem was providing bloggers a poetic way to express their console's broken.

As much as it pains me to post something bad about XBOX (being a PS3 and 360 owner I truly want XBOX to win this war), but I figured I need to let people know my experience with my XBOX.

First off, I have a launch console (Dec. 10, 2005). In November of 2006, I got my first Red Ring of Death. I called tech. support (and luckily they had just instituted that new policy that launch owners got a 1 year warranty) and got it replaced for free and very quickly.

Now, (four months later), I come home and notice my XBOX on with a second Red Ring of Death.

Man, I am so pissed; for something that costs $400 to only last 1 year is crap. This thing should have a lifespan of close to 4+ years!

Well, wish me luck, hopefully Microsoft will see fit to replace it before it graduates to being covered under the lemon law (3 strikes).

I stood in line and got a launch system. For about the last two weeks I had been getting period freeze ups. Last night she gave up the ghost and the 3 red LEDs of the apocalypse took her home (just in time for my big weekly game of Gears with all of my office mates). Anyway, I contacted MS and wound up getting the same deal. $70 for a repair and a new 1yr warranty on top of it. At first I was mad that they weren't going to replace it for free because I feel like I am a pretty loyal 360 consumer (I own the premium, 2 wireless controllers, the wireless race wheel, the camera, hd-dvd drive, and about 30 games). But after I calmed down, I thought 70 bucks and a new 1yr warranty wasn't too bad. So now I'm waiting for the shipping box.

I don’t think MS ever claim they sold 10.000.000. This is actual number they send to the store. There are only 6.000.000 XBL users. Unless 4.000.000 accidently die on the road from store to home (without actually update system even single time as silver or gold user). There is only 6.000.000 units sold. Some of them already dead or replaced.

AKM: Dude, not everyone who buys an Xbox 360 bothers to connect to the Internet. Assuming your number is even true, it's shocking that over 60% of Xbox buyers have bothered to go through the trouble of hooking up their Xbox 360s to connect to the Internet, especially when you consider that you have to buy a Wi-Fi adapter if you don't want to go through the trouble of using Ethernet.

I like hearing these stories. I've been thinking of getting a 360 and it does seem like they have an alarmingly high failure rate, judging by the accounts of various blogs and video game sites. Say what you will about numbers, I've never heard stories like this before about a console, especially over a year into its life. Look at the PS3, it seems to be pretty solid, and the Wii had a couple reports of failure at launch, but not much since then. MS has given credence to the claims of widespread failures by revising their warranty multiple times.

So the more stories the better. Hopefully I can figure out when it's safe to buy.

AssemblyLineHuman: 6.000.000 not 60% Xbox buyers. Its 100% Xbox buyers. That’s the point. You can hate connect to internet... but you still have to update your system and if you done it at least ones, you counted by MS automatically.

And if MS count xbox1 user also... If that confirmed ... then number of 360 sold maybe way lover then 6m.

I may be wrong. It’s just look like it, if you count it yourself.

Jeez, people... Just pay MS the extra $60 for the service contract when you get your 360 and you never have to worry about any $140 payments down the line, no matter how many you may need.

If you cheap out on the warranty plan, then you're gambling on getting out of paying anything when the time comes. Better to just give them your dough up front, and enjoy three years of worry-free gameplay.

Or do the retailer's plan... Either way, it's a $400 item, and you can't spend a couple bucks to protect it? If it dies, that's your problem, and you don't get to whine about the cost of repair.

Think ahead.

Let me reiterate my story:

I won a launch console. It worked FLAWLESSLY for over a year. No red rings, no problems of ANY kind.

I sold it and got a new one because I wanted to get an extended warranty (couldn't get it on a console I won, for some reason) and because I wanted the quieter BenQ optical drive.

So far, I've had this new one for several months, and have never had a problem.

When I worked at Best Buy for the first year of the XBox 360's life, we had VERY FEW returns due to defect. Out of thousands sold, we got back less than a dozen.

So... What you read on the Internet is either people who played it nonstop until it died, people who didn't take care of it (enclosed space, covered the vents, played on the carpet, didn't use a surge protector, etc.) or people who are outright lying, mixed in with that 3% or so who really did get a bad console.

They are not prone to defects, and the red ring of death only shows up for a very small percentage of users--- It's just that these guys are on the Internet and make a big deal of it.

And as for those who have MULTIPLE defective units, you have to ask yourself: Is it Microsoft's XBox 360 design that has the problems, or is it the guy who keeps reporting it's broken who maybe CAUSES the problems?

Seriously... This "OMG! ITZ BROKED!" hysteria is getting lame. Consumer electronics fail sometimes, and they especially fail when they're not treated well. I have a hard time believing that Every Single One of these people claiming their 360 "just died" weren't doing something to help speed it along to a premature death.

only a fool will give $600 for a ps3 when the defect rate is 50% on a ps1 and ps2 what you expect it to all the sudden work on the ps3? If you answered yes, you may be stupid. You get 1 year warranty on the 360 and the ps3. You can pay $49 to best buy or other companies to get a extended warranty
Dont listen to zerocorps he like Fony likes to lie. You dont have to pay microsoft for the warranty it is included for free, just like the ps3 1 year is free. You have to pay for repairs for ALL the manufacturers if it breaks down after the extended warranty. Thing is Microsoft will now pay for the shipping to and from them for you! The others have yet to match that. But Nintendo is the best reliability, the 360 second best, ps3 is dead last do to the PS1 and PS2 overthe top defect rate. In fact it was so bad that eveb capcom and ea PUBLICLY questioned the amount sold as being half replacements! Ouch that took balls!

@41

You are kind of a dolt, aren't you?

The XBox 360 Service Plan extends the service period from one year, which is included, to THREE years. You do know how to tell the difference between ONE and THREE, don't you?

Personally, I consider it worth the price of one game to get three years of worry-free gaming. If the system dies in that three years, the repair/replacement is on Microsoft's dime (or, technically, already paid for at a significant discount.)

Yes, you could take a chance on the standard one year warranty, but it's not very likely your system is going to break down within a year if you TAKE CARE OF IT. The chance of it failing increases every year, though, because it's being used. Use equals heat, and heat equals internal workings being worn out over time.

If my XBox 360 breaks down any time, any number of times, from now to 2010, I'm covered. No cost for shipping, no cost for repairs, and no hassles. That's worth $60 to me. If it's not worth it to you, then so be it. If you can't even spend the extra $40 for a retailer's Product Replacement Plan because you've GOT to have that game instead, then you deserve what you get in two and a half years when the system is worn out from being played all the time, and needs a little work to the tune of $140 plus shipping.

This is not rocket science, chaps... You have a sophisticated computer in a small case, and you put it through some abuse and lots of use, and you don't expect it's going to eventually wear out?

And if you're a dumbass who puts his 360 on a carpeted floor, or sets it on top of a TV or VCR, then you really can't talk about MS making faulty products. Your faulty brain is the problem.

I don't know what to say about all of these failures, other than that, when I visit friends, I often see them putting their 360's in stupid places, ie on carpet, or in other poorly ventilated areas. I'm sure that doesn't explain them all, but I just cannot fathom one person getting seven bad boxes. "Something" they were doing led to the failures. Even the friends I've seen abusing their boxes have yet to see the Red Ring...I dunno.

but for some reason they feel a need to swipe this issue under the rug with the 360..but if this was a ps3 problem by now it would have been a thousand comments on this thread...

I can't watch tv with bias media telling me how the ps3 is doomed..but hear or see nothing about the high rates of "red rings of death"

Wait..over in Europe they actually reported the "red rings of death" thing on some local news...but here in America we don't even hear some much as a whisper about it on tv.but almost daily "ps3 is doomed" thing..something to think about with microsoft 3.2 BILLION dollar marketing plan

From #4:
"--- With a 3% defect rate there is a 1 in 5000 chance of a single person getting seven defective units (on the current install base of 10 million)
--- With a 6% defect rate the chances are 1 in 35
--- With a 12% defect rate you should see 3-4 such cases on a 10 million install base"

This is a case of some fairly bad statistics. I haven't studied any mathematics for over 10 years, and even then, barely beyond high-school level, but I can at least correct this with some vaguely more accurate statements.

If the failure rate were at 3%, you would expect perhaps 10 or 20 users to have four or more faulty consoles. With one or two very unlucky people pontentially receiving five or even six consecutive faulty devices. Seven in a row is EXTREMELY unlikely (1 in 5000, ie. 0.02%, is way off).

We are unfortunately entirely dependent upon Microsoft to tell the truth to really know what is going on though. Using anecdotes doesn't give us the full picture. For example, I would guess that these days there are many hundreds of gaming blogs, magazines, and websites. It's far from surprising to discover that several of them have received consoles that have died. But unless you properly determine the sample size, it is impossible to know whether there is more or less than a 3% failure rate.

Be sceptical. Part of that is not just taking Microsoft's claim of about 3% at face value, but the other part is not reaching conclusions based on anecdotes from the internet.

paralipsis, i did suggest that 3% is most likely lower than the actual defect rate.
As you rightly pointed "If the failure rate were at 3%...Seven in a row is EXTREMELY unlikely"

The AVERAGE user base over the whole of 2006 = about 6 mil

HENCE A more likely defect rate is about 10%..that means a 60% chance of a Seven-in-row on a 6-million base (6 mil multiplied by p^7 where p = probability of one defect)

Also, the 3% defect rate was stated at LAUNCH..obviously the average rate over a longer period would be much higher
