Whiners.

That pretty much sums it up. Medium isn't as difficult as people pretend.

What's next? I should be able to skip ahead to the very end of Halo 3 because I paid good money for it and I should be able to play anyway I want.

How is this any different then racing games where the best cars are unlocked as you progress through a career? No big deal to me...though, for the harder to get songs, it would be nice to have some way to just unlock them for people that may never be able to get them the traditional way.

That is kind of lame, and throw in the fiasco of the broken guitars (my whammy bar was broke, and every other button on the guitar was too) you have alot of pissed off "Rock Stars" LOL....

Red Octane should submit a "FREE" download on the marketplace so all 70 are acessible.....and the first pack of DL content should be free too.......just my opinion

Don't worry. I'm sure you will be able to unlock all of the songs after plopping down some micro-points.

When you opened up Halo for the first time did you expect to have all of the levels available for you to prance around in? People are unreal sometimes. Part of the fun of GH is the reward of moving on to new songs you've unlocked by mastering the first couple.

You know yesterday I vented that this argument was dumb. I can't start an adventure game on the last level and get to see all the cut scenes, I have to make it on my own.

Then I read Tycho's comments on it this morning and it made me think a little bit more. Do I think that all the tracks should just be available from go...I still have to say no. However I do understand that perhaps they should be available in Quick Play and Co-Op modes.

The main game mode I still think should be where you work your way up to the better tracks.

I'm starting to think this whole article is just a lame attempt to get hits for his site.

Usually, Jonah's comments are interesting and worth reading.

Instead, most of his responses to his article has been "No, no. Your analogy is wrong. Mine is right" or "Some people actually buy Guitar Hero for one song and they're being lied to"

Right, just like I'm sure there's some poor bastard out there that bought Test Drive Unlimited because it has Nissan cars.

I think the gaming news sites should stop bringing up this stupid article. If a person can't put in the maybe 5-8 hours it takes to unlock the complete song list, maybe they shouldn't have plopped down $90 on a video game in the first place. Next.

I can see the argument that they should all be available in Quickplay mode. I think this desire stems from those who have played the PS2 version and are use to having all the songs. I know I'm one of those. But I didn't complain when I was playing the PS2 GH2 and It's not that big of a deal to play through them again. I mean, you're going to play the songs anyway.

Cry me a river (the phrase not the song :) )

Isn't the entire point of playing any game getting rewarded for accomplishing something? It's the equivalent of advertising the 8 worlds of Super Mario Brothers and suing because you can't jump to 8-1 at the outset. Please..

My purchase of Guitar Hero 2 was money well spent. It's a ton of fun and I am enjoying earning my achievements and unlocking new songs.

People have been wanting GH2 on the 360 forever and now it comes out and people actually complain that "Hey it's the same ***king game!? WTF why isn't everything unlocked from the start!?" I mean WTF??

Sure they could have everything unlocked from the get-go, but the people whining and bitching about not having everything unlocked from the start, will only bitch that "I spent $90, but where's my motivation if everything is unlocked from the beginning?"

Ya know bitch when they do something real crummy, like make you spend MS points on the songs instead of unlocking them through progression. Don't bitch about something they've done since GH1.

It's just like the Xbox elite. People bitched & complained about not having a 360 that was black, had a larger HDD & had HDMI.. So for $80 more than the premium MS comes out with the Elite and now people bitch that "Well it only has HDMI 1.2 and not 1.3" Yea, big difference there that I'm sure EVERYONE can take advantage of at this point.. or "It's too expensive" Come on now.

I deffinately see the point being made but I don't entirely agree with it.

It's kind of a hard thing to balance - on one hand you want unlockables and stuff because that's kind of the point of a game - progress via skill.

But on the other hand, I have a copy of Sonic Adventure 2 for the dreamcast with a hidden version of green hill zone in full 3d that I will never, ever see because I'm not good enough to get the medals, nor is there a cheat code for it. I feel kind of cheated that they made getting that level so rediculously hard that only a tiny percentage of gamers will see it.

So I guess the answer is make unlockables possible, or add cheat codes to unlock them. Both of which guitar hero 2 offers, so I guess we're cool.

Sorry, but I enjoy working to unlock songs, and there's nothing difficult about easy mode. Play medium all the way through (the final tracks are challenging) and you'll have every song. Big whoop, and more fun than instantly being able to play anything.

Sure, if they locked up some songs until you beat hard or expert I might be pissed, but the current setup doesn't bother me in the least. Maybe it's because I have no trouble beating medium, but I still think that's reasonable for people who do need more practive.

I read about this on another site and at this point I'm wondering why anyone is even bothering to link to it lol. On some level it makes some sense, but beyond that superficial layer it fizzles out. The presented analogies (the cable channel thing), in particular, are just extreme stretches.

And that's really the problem, because I can't come up with much in other mediums that can be directly compared. You have to read a book to understand it, but sure, you can skip to any chapter you want the second you get it. Same with songs on a CD or chapters on a DVD movie.

Games are kind of a different case. You're not just absorbing things, you're supposed to interact and attain things. I suppose something could be said about comments on the site later about how almost every thing is unlocked from DDR from the start, but I don't see how that makes it a better game in any way.

You might as well complain about almost every game in existence at this point. The back of some Super Mario game box certainly will show some snowy area or lava area, but I have to play through the grassy area to get there first. Big deal.

This is no different than any game where you actually have to be good at the game to get the extra levels and content. So because you (metaphorically speaking, of course) suck at a game, everyone has to suffer through too easy and lame games?
I like unlocking things in games. It is an obsession, actually. If everything was laid out, where’s the challenge? Where is the reward?

If you can’t play through GH I or II on medium, you have no business playing a rhythm game of any kind in the first place. Seriously.

I don't see what the big issue is. Its not like it takes more than one play through on medium to unlock everything.

I don't buy the "it says 70 songs there should be 70 songs from the start" logic either. Every game ever made says "over xx amount of levels/zones to play in". However, never are all these levels/zones available from the start.

This isn't any different than the majority of other games out there, on any console, in the last ten years.
The only argument I could see is people wanting all the songs in Quick Play or Practice.

the fact that they even raise the question shows that the retards at game stooge (fitting name) aren't much in the way of gamers. Else they would understand the purpose of unlocking things in games.

It sounds to me like their hands are locked in a permanent claw from chronic masturbation and it's preventing them from succeeding in GH2.... very sad...

Songs should be available entirely in multiplayer, as should cars and tracks in racing games, and all of the like.
People comparing this to adventure games and games like that are, excuse me, but flat out idiots. It isn't the same thing. This is a party game. In the party oriented modes, everything should be available without having to earn it. That's silly.

But also, in Halo, the game doesn't say, "Oh, you're on easy. The Flood is a level you have to play on Legendary. Not good enough to play it on Legendary? Too bad." You can play through the entire game on easy and it is no different(except the Elite and Johnson embrace). And once you have beaten all the levels on easy, you can go back and beat them on harder difficulties as you so choose. You don't even have to beat them in the correct order.

Guitar Hero II on the other hand, lets you have a taste and then says, "Medium is too hard? Well, you wouldn't like those songs anyways. First time playing? I don't give a damn, you have to earn those songs, you'll like it and you'll thank me later." Don't get me wrong, I like the game, it's just that I only use my pinkies for typing, and to be truthful, they aren't really adept at pushing in the blue button. And as far as I'm concerned, that orange button doesn't do anything.

We have all been playing games for years to be challenged and now along come 'newbs' that just want to be fed interractive entertainment.

Unlocking stuff is a classic game feature. What the hell are people whining about?

Isn't that why cheat codes came to exist? For those not skilled enough to really get to a certain area in a game, but to give them at least a look at it.

Unlocking is not the problem, its implementation in guitar hero is possibly suspect though.

OMFG! This is a perfect example of the A.D.D. generation epidemic. (Attention Deficit Disorder) Kids today are so spoiled with internet, cell phones, and anything else to do with fast technology, that they want everything handed to them, and NOW!!! Stop complaining, and slow your rolls. Some people think they are Paris Hilton, and can buy off whatever they feel they deserve. Honestly I don't see a problem with the system... unlocking a song when you "EARN" it is perfect. Having all the songs available right off the bat would be like letting every team advance to the play-offs for a chance at the Super Bowl. Where's the reward in that? The system is designed to make beginners into experts. The only way to do that is to start off easy, let people get the hang of it, then progressively work their way up the ladder. The reward of unlocking the songs is the motivation to keep playing and get better. Practice and patience! If you can't play one of the harder songs on a harder level, then you won't be able to hang with the pros in a Pro Face-Off... you sure as hell won't be able to be good enough if you jump right into a song Hangar 18 on Expert without parctice. I guess you can always try to beat a pro with the "Regular Face-Off", but all that handicap proves is that you can play like a wuss on Easy better than a pro trying to rock his ass out on Expert! And for all you complainers who don't believe in this method, Red Octane always eventually puts out a Master Cheat code to unlock everything, but you probably aren't even patient enough to wait for that either, huh?! For God's sake, slow down and stop crying!!! The code for the PS2 GH2 was:Blue, Yellow, Orange, Red, Orange, Yellow, Red, Yellow, Red, Yellow, Red, Yellow, Red, Yellow, Red, Yellow

I feel like Charlie Brown missing the ball when Lucy pulls it away when I fail a song but I refuse to use a cheat code. I will just practice and practice until I get better and do as the game intended unlock songs.

Marketing makes the boxes anyway not the programmers so if ATARI is in legal jeopardy blame the idiots who created the ad copy. ARRRRGHHH!!!

Eventually, someone is going to program a game where all you do is put in a disk and watch someone else progress through the game levels. I am sorry isn't that movies, t.v., books. Games are meant to play.

Next thing you know someone is going to sue MSFT because Achievements are so unfair and hard to get. I want them I am entitled... (oh that is Sony, sorry)

Get over it.

Well the website name says it all GAMESTOOGE

Uh, this may be slightly off-topic compared to the other comments, but I for one do suck at this game and tried to use the cheat code mentioned to unlock all songs, but it does not work for me. -_-'

I did not expect to be able to get all 70 songs from the start, but it would be nice to have them all especially since some of the songs I really want to play I haven't gotten good enough to unlock yet.

On the other hand, take a look at Dance Dance Revolution Universe for the 360, that has nearly all of the songs unlocked for you from the start, and it's a nice thing to have, but you STILL do have to work your way from the easier songs to the tougher ones.

I just got mine today. I don't really mind unlocking the songs too much ... it is a game right? That's part of the game. It would be cool to have some kind of sandbox mode where I could just goof off and play more than the original 6 right off the bat, or maybe some kind of weird audio toy where I could play with the music in my Library of custom tunes. (Like alter the pitch, speed, tempo, add special effects, etc. Anybody remember the sound effects you could play with on the Seag Saturn when you put a CD in it?), but it's not really that important.

The code mentioned was originally for the PS2 version. I'm not sure if it will work with the 360. You should enter it at the main screen (where it says Career, Quickplay, Multiplayer, etc.) On the PS2 it usually takes a few tries. Haven't got it to work on the 360 yet either. Maybe they'll release a specific 360 code sometime in the near future.

O = ORANGE
R = RED
