Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II guitar problem and possible common thread
This week readers, colleagues, friends and Gamestop employees (handling the returns we've been hearing about) are all discovering what happens when sloppy Red Octane peripheral manufacturing takes place. In regards to the Xbox 360's Guitar Hero II guitar malfunctions, Red Octane may be "currently in the process of having [their] internal QA and production teams" looking into a possible issue -- but we're starting to find a common thread.
We were already concerned by the fact that two different guitars were released with the game. Red Octane is being very tight in their communication on this issue and has yet to explain why two models were manufactured before the $90 product shipped. Model number 95055, where the pedal jack is next to the power cord, is the model resulting in the most complaints of a faulty or slow-reacting whammy bar. Model number 95065, where the pedal jack is next to the shoulder strap, is having less complaints, but was received broken by our sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy.
Still want to take the risk of buying Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360 before this problem gets fixed? Consumers may lessen their chances of getting a broken axe by taking a look at the back of the retail box (detailed picture after the break). On the back of the box, above the UPC and ESRB rating, you'll see the "Part No." A majority of issues revolve around Part No. 95055, so try avoiding it to diminish risk of a faulty whammy bar.

Because 95065 is... 10 higher.

Mine is 95055, but the pedal jack is right next to the strap.

"risk of buying Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360 before this problem gets fixed? "
If you are willing to face the huge risk of a defective 360, and the small but significant chance of MULTPLE defective consoles, whats the big deal with an odd defective GH2 peripheral? For anyone who took the risk of buying the 360, with its "MASSIVE DAMAGE", this is a small risk.
Kristian @ Apr 6th 2007 10:19AM
Mine says 95067...
DrHockey @ Apr 6th 2007 10:23AM
Joystiq - your article is not accurate. People need to look at the serial # on the guitar itself, not the box. My box has a serial # ending in 55 but the guitar itself has a serial # ending in 65, with the jack next to the shoulder strap.
polly @ Apr 6th 2007 10:28AM
Danger's my middle name.
Seriously, it's really not that much of a risk since you can just return it to the store if it's faulty.
No problems with my 95055.

DOOM DOOM DOOM!!!
I've got 2 guitars, both of them from the "bad" batch, and they both work perfectly. So do my friend's 2 guitars. Don't believe the trolls, don't believe the hype.
sheppy @ Apr 6th 2007 10:36AM
If it's broken, oh well. Not like you can't get an exchange.
I was just saying the other day, I can resist Guitar Hero on 360 but I never looked at a track listing. My Chemical Romance is whispering in my ear, ever so gently... "and if you heart stops beating, I'll be here wondering, did you get what you deserved?" DAMNIT, I have to spend $90 today...
LoneRanger17 @ Apr 6th 2007 10:41AM
I have the one that is supposed to have the problem, the port next to the power cord.
I noticed that if I have the whammy bar pointing in the direction of the neck of the guitar, that it will not work.
I have to have the whammy bar facing down or at an angle facing down. Then it works every time. I'm assuming that is because when it facing that way, I just naturally put more pressure on it when I press it. So it's getting pressed down a bit and to the side.
Where if it's just pointing in the direction of the neck, I just press it down without any extra pressure. Then it doesn't work.
Tengaport @ Apr 6th 2007 10:44AM
I am one of the unlucky ones with a busted whammy. I would say the whammy bar works every 3rd or 4th time I try it and even then it is severly delayed making it impossible to use with the shorter notes.
I boxed it up and plan on returning it today. I only hope they still have some in stock and if they do that they are the newer models.
Great game, but dissapointing about the guitar :(
jak @ Apr 6th 2007 11:12AM
my box also has 55 at the end but my controller has 65 also.
sheppy @ Apr 6th 2007 10:51AM
"I've got 2 guitars, both of them from the "bad" batch, and they both work perfectly. So do my friend's 2 guitars. Don't believe the trolls, don't believe the hype."
So obviously because you had no problems, there is no way a problem could currently exist. Look, if it's a common thing happening on the message boards, there HAS to be some truth about it. Just like the stuck pixels on PSP, the case cracking on DS Lite, and the DREs on PS2. This shit isn't just made up like the UMD flyers (you mean if I twist my system with a suspension track drive bay, I'd disengage the track and open the bay? Get the fuck out of here! Defect!).
There has to be a common occurance. Do believe the hype and just hope you aren't a victim.
JBob @ Apr 6th 2007 11:05AM
I just wanted to add that I have two of the supposed "broken" ones. and they are broken, the whammy is very slow reacting, and to get them to work you have to slam it down then bring it all the way back up, past its idle position before slamming it down again, and even then it only works sometime. its a pain and no one else in my family can even get it to work period.
RFOM, wtf? massive damage was the PS3...
ANt @ Apr 6th 2007 11:07AM
GH II rocks, regardless of glitchy guitars....at least we don't have to wait for an empty box from RO and then wait 37 days to get it back like I did w/ MS!!

That thread is a DIY for fixing the guitar, and it only involves a phillips head screwdriver if you're careful. It does involve solder if you are, um, uncareful so just watch what you're doing. Further down, someone even mentioned connecting it to the PC and using the X-Axis sensor to tune it if you have the software. Maybe this is worth a try? Warning though, it may void the warranty, if there is one... I don't know, everyone else says that after DIYs.
baby sea tuna @ Apr 6th 2007 11:24AM
sheppy, i don't doubt that some people are having problems with this (it's not like hardware manufaturing always goes 100% as planned) but the fact remains that once one story pops up somewhere, 200 similar ones start coming in from people who don't even necessarily own the product in question.
All I'm saying is: it's the internet, take it with a grain of salt.

my box had 55, and my controller had 65? does'nt that reek of "ceo: "oh sh*t, we got a problem in the test batch, better change up before we launch".... #2:" but what aboot the 10,000 all ready in production?" ceo:"we stop production and call up a new line" #2:"what about the stock?" #3:"it would be well below the norm for defective units" ceo:"then it's settled, we launch" #2:"what about all the 4 million boxes we printed?" ceo:"we just pack the new guitar in there, no one will notice" #3"a recall is'nt in the budget" #2"is'nt that wrong?" ceo:"yer FIRED!, #3, you are my #2 now""
Jason @ Apr 6th 2007 11:47AM
My 360 GH2 controller, the supposed good one, has a loose piece of something rattling around its inside. It works fine, but who knows for how long.

@Snap
Thank you for that. We obviously could not all make the connection between a known Sony troll and PS3s flagship title. It was too difficult for us. In fact, I woke up this morning, thinking to myself, "I wonder what acronym would be difficult to spot amongst the interwebs?" Now if you'll excuse me, I have to buy a doovde' player...
@baby sea tuna
I know. I'm just saying it's obviously a common theme (but hasn't detered my purchase. Made calls, everyone locally is sold out but CC has an online deal of free shipping PLUS MS points which equate to free songs when they become available) so "buyer beware" as it goes. Yes, the internet trolls do blow up possible problems, but trolls aren't exactly creative. The problem has to exist before they yammer on and on about it.
Case in point, flying UMDs. First video appeared, the guy was practically wringing his PSP like a washrag and had the system angled down. Hardly "flying". Seriously, GI Joe missiles before spring loading had a better arch. Suddenly everyone started showing up with stories about how their console bays disengaged in the middle of a Ridge Racer match and ruined their game (Ridge Racer can run without the disc, it only needs the music and loading after the racer).

What then, would you do in your infinite wisdom of running a company and supply chain?
New 'batches' and minor differences ALWAYS happen in the CE industry, which you obviously don't understand. Indicating a part number on the box is the least indicative of anything there is...it's all about the actual serial number on the product.
Barbie Fu @ Apr 6th 2007 11:54AM
by the way, my guitar rocks.........and, what are the chances we could be getting serious flammage from a poster in the enemies market group? If i ran sony's PR, and marketing depts., i would have one of my monkeys monitoring my competitors re: "adversaries" in every catagory, and would try to create hype, the only way a monster rolls.
if I worked for ms, again it would be the same, the competition for dollars is too tempting, and it would be like i was acting in a foreign way, you know, like being a fat desperate lesbian in some chat room just to start heat until they boot you.
Youri Zoutman @ Apr 6th 2007 12:01PM
My 95055 EU edition does have a less responsive whammy bar, but nowhere near bad enough to cause any real problems.
Shafnitz @ Apr 6th 2007 12:03PM
I have two guitars. The one that came with the bundle is the the one that is supposed to be having an issue (the port is near the power). Mine is not. My second controller is the one that is not having problems according to most people (port near the headphone jack). This one is having issues with the wammy bar. I'll push it down but nothing will happen in the game until the bar comes all the way out and then back in again.
So, based on my experience, it doesn't matter which model you get, you might have the issue either way. It doesn't make the game unplayable. I don't see any problem with using it until RedOctane issues some kind of statement. If they don't seem to be able to resolve it, I'll just exchange it for another one. It's not the life shattering issue that some people are making it out to be.
Joshua @ Apr 6th 2007 12:01PM
I would like to thank the earlier adopters for buying these products when they first come out, so that a couple months from now the products will have more of the bugs and issues worked out of them.

Final Prototype @ Apr 6th 2007 12:30PM
I've had the version with the jack next to the power cord since launch day and I can safely say it's not broken.
When I first got it, I noticed a number of things requiring some "breaking in". The strummer was a bit tight compared the the PS2 versions and the whammy bar as well, where it wouldn't react until a second or third press. Since then, I've beat the hell out of it and it now works flawlessly everytime.
Joshua @ Apr 6th 2007 12:30PM
I have one of each of these types. The guitar that came with the game had the jack by the power cord and it did seem to have some issues for the first couple of hours of play.
After 12 hours logged on both controllers though I can say that both of the ones I own work fine.
Working for a company that imports goods from overseas I do know that just because I was lucky doesn't mean a serious number of folks are getting a junk unit.
RedOctane might be keeping silent now but as soon as they have some details from the manufactures overseas I'm sure you'll see more details. They don't need to constantly talk about the issue until they have a better understanding to exactly what the issue is and how it occured.
If they admitted the problem now everyone would want a fix now...and they have no fix because they have yet to figure out where the problem is. Give them time and I'm sure they will make good to all of those who are having issues.
Mike Frisco @ Apr 6th 2007 12:59PM
Looking at the box is really not helpful.
I bought a brand-new launch-day set from Toys R Us in Southern California.
My box said 95055 but the guitar inside says 95065.
And it's definitely a working 95065 model - with the pedal jack next to the headset port. Works flawlessly so far.
Just so you know, whatever's printed on the box is not a reliable indicator of what's inside!
razer @ Apr 6th 2007 1:26PM
Ahh, It's the Xbox 360 why am I not surprised that there is MORE hardware problems.. Maybe they should come out with a Guitar Hero II ELITE.

I sent in a question to Red Octane about the possible Guitar Hero II defective controllers, here was the response I just got via e-mail:
Dear Customer,
We have isolated this issue to two model numbers that can be found on the guitar's packaging. The numbers are 95065 and 95055. We are asking that customers who purchased their items from a retailer perform an exchange with that respective store( for a model number other than the defective two listed above). Customer's who purchased through our online story can complete an rma request for their defective item and we will exchange it for a fully function guitar controller. We do apologize for the inconvenience and will resole these matters.
UPS is dropping mine off today... here's hoping!
unfinity @ Apr 6th 2007 2:00PM
Mine is from the "good batch". I have no problems with the whammy bar, but I have a HELL of a time kicking in the star power! I've knocked over speakers with the cord trying (unsuccessfully) to kick it in. It's not that it never works, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it does.
Anybody else having trouble with this?
Final Prototype @ Apr 6th 2007 2:14PM
@35
Yea, I still have a problem with that. You seem to need to to let the guitar sit upright for a while and then it'll kick in, or sometimes whipping it up extra fast will do it.
Maybe if we violently shake the guitar around for a while, that part'll loosen up too..
MegoSteve @ Apr 6th 2007 2:19PM
Your photo is somewhat misleading. My Guitar Hero II (which was purchased at Circuit City) has that part number shown above in the box photo, but it also has a sticker over the bar code with the 65 part number on it. It is a unit with the pedal jack right next to the headset port.
My whammy does work, but it suffers from a bit of lag. I think that's a software issue, because when I plug the guitar into my PC, the game controller test shows it working perfectly.
AirIntake @ Apr 6th 2007 3:36PM
Mine's a 95065 with the plug by the communicator port. It works great.
bendak @ Apr 6th 2007 4:08PM
Mine is 95067 (yes, 67 not 65).
Seems to work fine.
GunForHire @ Apr 6th 2007 4:09PM
I got the 'dodgy' model yesterday, and the whammy bar crapped out after about 20 minutes. Got it replaced with another of the same model, and it's been fine so far.
Jibberhead @ Apr 6th 2007 5:13PM
I got a "67" box, but my guitar is a "65" ?
Brian @ Apr 7th 2007 5:51PM
I have one of the supposed "Bad" batch, and my first guitar acutally didn't work at all and had to be taken back. The one I have now seems to work fine. I completely suck at the game, but I'm hoping that will improve. Any tips?
Matt @ Apr 7th 2007 11:33AM
I went out and got mine on wednesday at best-buy. Part number 95055, the whammy bar was intermittent in the first few hours of playing but after a few days it seems to work fine.
Alex @ Apr 7th 2007 4:07PM
Just last night I was "shocked" by my xbox guitar no.95055 and now none of the buttons work and so the guitar is pretty much junk. No refund from walmart and still waiting on reply from redoctane : (
J-F @ Apr 7th 2007 5:44PM
Official answer on red octane website: http://www.redoctane.us/support-center/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=128
I have returned the first guitar I got with product code ending with "65" and got another one ending with "65" with same lag issue with whammy bar. I found a way to easily isolate the problem. On a long note, tap very quickly on the whammy bar, like one tenth of a second, if nothing shows on the note, here you go, you got proof. I guess only very experienced players will see the problem since nes players dont know how it was supposed to be (as responsive as in the PS2 version).
Jake @ Apr 8th 2007 8:20PM
i purchased one from bestbuy and it had a broken whammy so i took it bakk and got another one and it was broken so i took those back and those were both 55's so i just decided to go get it at target but the box said 55 so i took it out and it was a 65 so i would suggest not looking at the box part number and look on the back of the guitar or were the port is located and it seems like the 55's are sort of looser and also if its a bv its good version but the bad one is the hv
Andrew @ Apr 8th 2007 12:17AM
sorry to burst bubbles here guys.... but I've owned TWO... count 'em TWO 95055's... and TWICE has the Whammy been defective.
Star power seems fine on the second controller however... the first one was a bit tricky.... very sensitive.
Anyway, Octane sent me to Activision. Activision sent me to Gamestop. Gamstop gave me another defective guitar. No new shipments for another week.
Should I feel like the ugly girl at the prom yet?
Jessica Q. @ Apr 8th 2007 1:39AM
Alex - Same thing happened to me with a computer mouse once. Mouse died and I had to buy a new one. That sucked. :( Good luck getting an exchange/refund.
GoonieGooGoo @ Apr 8th 2007 12:37AM
Is this a break-in problem or an actual problem....or is it a software problem (as people have connected it to PCs and show it to work correctly)
I'm on my 3rd 95055 box.....and still have lagged Whammy Bar performance....out of the box.
Maybe I'm just being nitpicky but It should perform as immediately as the GH2 for Playstation 2.
I'll play for a couple hours and see if the controller breaks-in on this 3rd one......if not it's going back and I'll wait a month for them to get this problem fixed.
Triple_K1ll @ May 25th 2007 2:13AM
My 95055 works just fine with hours of play already logged. My friend has a 95055 model however that has some very minor issues. When he uses the mic jack on the guitar there seems to be a subtle constant white noise and a slight echo to the person on the other end of the conversation. Nothin major since this is an ad-hoc multiplayer game anyway. Who wants to chat online while they rock out with themselves anyway?
