Wow, noir meets Stranger than Fiction! Good job, Ludwig. I still wish there was a way to get a feed of just Ludwig posts :)

I believe this is the first virtual 'stiq murder. Dont know hte significance of that. Really sad. Ludwig was a great guy.

Oh, well. The genre was too constrained for his talent. He is in a better place now. Cant wait to get his letters from the other side.

I feel like that dog in the bugs bunny cartoon: "I cant wait to see what happens to dick tracy next week!"

As for Gumshoe, I will always remember "You just dont say No to a man with a stuffed yak in his sole."

Now the yak is free to run. Run yak! Run free!

God I love these threads.

"Final Fantasy XIII going to the Wii and getting scrapped for the PS3 is not out of the question."

Actually, given Squaresofts past, it is out of the question. FFXII has proven Square just isn't willing to pull the plug on a game that's getting exposure. Plus, you forget... the same team behind FFXIII is the team that made the FFVII tech demo. FFXIII was originally going to be a PS2 game. After they worked on the PS3, they simply could not get their workers back into the PS2 mindset and so what little work was already done was completely scrapped in favor of PS3. Now, if they couldn't work on PS2 for this game for a 112 million installed base, what makes you think 6 million Wiis will convince them?

And having said that, I would feel a hell of a lot more comfortable about the future of gaming in Nintendos hands if it wasn't for constant speeches about reaching nongamers and expanding the industry. It's like they are looking back at their loyale fanbase that allowed them to stay on lifesupport during their many fuckup periods only to turn around and say, "Fuck you guys, your grandma is hotter!" I know it's an exaggeration but still, I'm tired of hearing all this nongamer shit while Wii owners are still waiting for their gamer games. Hopefully Paper Mario will begin to fulfil the request. Also, don't depend on the third parties because they are, in fact, fucking embarassingly lazy.

@Nintendofanboy

I had Excitetruck and traded it in. Why? Because if Nintendo is going to do a pathetically unoriginal Hydro Thunder formula ripoff, the least they could do is spice up the environments, bring more action and pressure to the gamer through intelligent AI instead of rubberbanding, and most importantly... SUPPORT FOUR PLAYER ON THEIR PARTY SYSTEM! Not to mention having to constantly select MP3s in front of each race was a bitch.

@ Sheppy

That's fine. I found it very fun to simply race as a 1-player arcade game and didn't need to have mp3s. Personally I know a ton of people who like it as well so I still recommend it.

Yes, it could use more players but even in 1-player it used a ton of screenspace where jumps were concerned. And I agree the environment could be diversified some more.

I could have done without the MP3s if the music in Excitetruck was to my liking. But it felt more like rednecks on electric guitars. Which fits the theme, I guess. But I don't know, After you've blazed off a ramp, crashed a couple ships in front just to have a steam tourists boat start weaving around ships as you fractically rush towards the a couple powerups needed before entering a cave filled with a live volcano erupting... Excitetruck seems tame.

Note to Midway,

Please bring back Hydro Thunder!

Hey, I've got a question: how many people live in Japan? Having gazed at DS's numbers over the course of the past year, it seems that people must have multiple colors and be purchasing them for their dogs and cats. I'd love to know if anyone has any insight on the cultural phenomenon that is the DS. I've got one- I like it- but is it *that* great, or are the Japanese just... different?

Oh, and Sheppy: While I feel your pain with regard to Nintendo's expanded focus, I don't see how a sane person could knock their current ridiculously successful business model. How can you argue with earnings that are 62% higher than expected? While it may not be to the liking to the hardcore crowd (technophile gamers like me with hi-def tvs, hdmi switching preamps and the like) as a stockholder I'm jumping up and down like a retard who passed an alegbra exam. Expanding their market to include traditional non-gamers just makes good business sense. It may suck for fanboys who burn incense to an effigy of Princess Peach/Toadstool/Buttercup, but your *true* gamers are platform agnostic, and while I've been waiting for Metroid, Mario and friends to come down the pipe I'll busy myself with Zelda and other platform titles like Gears, Guitar Hero, and the six million PS2 games I never got around to playing the previous generation. "Life support" is overstating it a bit- if you take a look at Ninty's financials for the fiscal years 1993 through 2003, they have been a profitable company each and every year (although 2001 was cutting it close). They've had over 2 billion in the bank since '95. Hell, if that's life support, sign me up.

Ryan LN, I understand where you are coming from and on one side of the coin, you are absolutely right. Profits, yay!

However, on the other side of the coin, there is a Nintendo that is farming out it's established franchises to smaller companies or even major ones that likely have no intention of delivering a good game, let alone a decent one. While to Nintendo, profit is profit, to a Nintendo fan, the name Starfox has become something to avoid at all costs, Kirby is just another annual cookie cutter platformer suffering from extreme sequelitis and Mario Party remains a big old middle finger flung skyward towards a fanbase on Wii desperately awaiting some meatier games. In general, the Gamecube era was a step backwards for Nintendo as most GC offerings had their 64 bit counterparts kicking their ass. And while the states has only seen one brain training game, they've become monthly events in Japan. And in the midst of all of this, the same company that gave us shoulder buttons is telling me controllers are far too complex while a Wii fighting game has me holding in two nunchuck buttons while jerking the chuck upward to jump/fly while needing to be able to block a huge frackin fireball headed for my skull. Wii are only seeing the simple, intuitive controls applied to minigames instead of hugely in depth games and for this failing, Nintendo is seeing widespread success and anytime you question these aspects, and anytime you question this aspect of a Nintendo fans life, you're instantly lynched or worse by the mindless drones who don't see a single problem with $60 controllers that don't even feature rechargable batteries.

And, incidently, I'm amazed that you'll bring up financials, brag on your stock, and utterly refuse to even look at the financial returns and where the money comes from. If the devout Nintendo fanbase was not giving constant support to Nintendo, they would have been in the red and not even the currency exchange rate, their savior for many years, would have kept them in the black.

But mainly, I want to see a Nintendo that doesn't treat hardcore gamers as a disease. I want a speech without a Wife-O-Meter. I want them to come forward and say "We have games for the hardcore gamers too" and NOT list Mario Party 8. I want the Nintendo that showed skateboarders tearing ass down a high school hallway and practically begged me to Play It Loud.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon looks to have some pretty good controls for a Wii fighter. And you can use the GameCube or Classic controllers too.

I do need to check that one out. I'm hoping my greatest fears aren't true. But I feel reducing the special moves to gestures kind of removes what's special about them. But as I stated before, I'm remaining optimistic. But if I rent and it's not too huge of a departure enough to warrant the wiimote controls, I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy one of the many, many, many $10 copies for PS2 in my area.
