Today's "looks good on paper" video: Super Paper Mario commercial
84
You've already been able to see some of our impressions of Super Paper Mario from GDC and watch the first 30 minutes of the gameplay, but watch the first TV commercial? Not until now.
The "Wii would like to play" campaign is slightly creepy, just because we don't want shadowy Nintendo agents watching us while we get our game on ... but if they come bearing Wiis and games, we wont complain too loudly.
You can also watch the introduction of the game after the jump. It's a lot shorter than the 30 minute gameplay video, and much easier on the patience. With all of the videos available, where's the game already? Looks like fun.

Seriously, the "best" game video of the day is an absolute joke and I would call it a failure. Does anybody really care about what thousands of uninformed, average gamers watched, enough to make it a blog post here at Joystiq?
That's not even the worst part - if a video is worth watching, you'd think Joystiq would have headlined it before these other thousand casual gamers got a chance to watch it and make it popular.
And then there's your naming of the blog item; you started trying to make it quirky by using an appropriate set of verbs or nouns and adverb and covert it to an object of "the most", "iest". Nobody liked that. Now you just say "Todays". Good lord, where is the consistency? You expect readers to enjoy the consistency of a daily post without even returning them with a decent entry that will remind them of the regularity of this so called "feature".
I think posts like this is why Joystiq is less and less appealing to me and most likely the general Internet public.

I for one love the video of the day.
And, I for one, love the random(iest) title that tags along with it.
And I AM a hardcore gamer. Owning all Nintendo consoles, aside from my busted Virtual Boy *sigh*, a Sega Genesis, Atari 2600, PSP, every Gameboy, DS Lite, XBox, XBox 360, I even got a Tiger Game.com (which sits shunned with it's two crap games on a shelf)
I thinks that Edward is an ass and will no doubt return within a couple of posts to "put me in my place" or whatnot so whatever.
Keep up the good work Joystiq.
Here's one dude that'll stick with you through the tough times!

Little kiddies? Just because you weren't alive to play any of the old school mario games doesn't mean this type of game is for kids. I bet the large percentage of gamers who play this game are graduated from college or in college, hoping to achieve some form of nostalgia by going back to their gaming roots. My suggestion to you: think before you speak. Not only did you make a completely arrogant and retarded statement, but now we all know you are under the age of 15 at least. Great job, looks like your "kiddie" argument backfired on you.

When I grow up, I'll be lucky if my dick is just HALF as big as yours, Mr. Johnson!

2)
I second the question: What crawled up Edward's ass and died? I motion that next week Joystiq asks what crawled up Edward's ass and died, instead of a webcomic wrap up poll.
3)
Initially, I wasn't planning on buying this game. But you hardly ever see the absolutely glowing praise this game has been getting...so...I figure I'm gonna pick it up Tuesday or Wednesday.
Although I really, really, really wish that they'd make an official Super Mario RPG 2 instead of another Paper Mario game. I don't usually care all that much for RPGs, but SMRPG is still one of my favorite games ever.

""go from 2D to 3D" should be more like "go from the x-y plane to the z-y plane!""
Your comment is completely wrong.
You do understand what each axis represents, right? The X-axis runs horizontal, which is going left and right in the game. The Y-axis runs vertical, which is up and down. Thus, we have two dimensions.
Add in the Z-axis (depth), we have three-dimensional movements.
In SPM's 3D mode, the world is rotated 90º, so that moving positive in the X direction is now "going away" from you. And then the Z-axis is now "moving left and right." You can still jump up, and onto blocks and such. Therefore, you now have three dimensions of movement.
Please try high school math again.

Hi Edward,
Nobody likes you. You have some people that you call your friends, but mostly they just tolerate you when you're around and make fun of you when you're not. Sorry.
The game looks like fun, so I do appreciate seeing more videos of it in action (thanks Joystiq!). Until Joystiq starts charging for their content, I don't understand why anyone feels like they have a legitimate right to complain about it (aside from just a general feeling of self-importance).
I'm sure you (the royal you) think you do have a good reason for making the "this video was pointless"-type comments every day, and I'm sure you'll post that reason somewhere here. It's BS, though, and you're just fooling yourself.

Kevin, they put 2 guys in the commercial because one of the Wii's core values is bringing people together. Having one guy on his own would go against this. Plus it looks more fun when people watching are also enjoying it. I for one am frickin CONVINCED! I want this game. Too bad it'll be ages until it's PAL localized for us.

If you think it's creepy with two guys from Nintendo just watching you play, just imagine how previewers feel when Nintendo makes them play first party games that are in a protected lock box the whole time they're playing.
Oh, and I really hope they have a commercial like this when the RE4 remake comes out, with a little girl and her grandma blasting off ganado heads, lol.

Super Paper Mario looks a kiddy game, but just because it's athestical design looks cartoon-y doesn't mean the game wont be fun. I have more fun off things like Yoshi's Island DS than I do games more inclined towards realism.
You should try diversifying what you play, not play games based on how much a person looks like a real person, if we all did that the video game market is going to be dead in 3 years tops. =/

I'm not a huge fan of this video, not because I hate Nintendo, or I want to scream "biased" at Joystiq, but because I don't think this commercial accurately portrays the things that make Wii unique (or maybe it actually shows a bit of the consoles wiikness).
There is no "Wii want to play" vibe in this commercial. It's single player while three other guys watch and the waggle of the Wiimote is barely used or even shown. It does nothing to really push me over the edge towards buying a Wii. It looks like a game I would be completely comfortable playing on my old and busted Gamecube. Kinda the same way I've felt about Twilight Princess and the upcoming RE4 redo (I can't believe people are actually excited about a Wii version of RE4). Slightly enhanced GC games are NOT the direction Nintendo needs to keep taking the Wii.

Wow, I'm glad I'm secure enough in my masculinity to not worry about a game looking "kiddie". Not all games have to be all "next gen brown™" you know.
About the RE4 Wii version, I'm excited about it not really because of the controls - just because of the easier difficulty levels. I have it on GameCube and that game is freaking hard. It's one of the few games I put down completely because I couldn't get through it, I have to admit. It's a really great game though and I'd like to play more of it. Use of the Wii controller is just icing on the cake (assuming it improves the gameplay).
As for the way Nintendo should be taking the Wii...that doesn't make any sense. You do realize Capcom makes RE4 right? That has nothing to do with Nintendo. Do you see Nintendo releasing a remake of a GameCube game with Wii controls? No. And before anyone says it, Twilight Princess doesn't count as a remake because the GameCube version wasn't even out yet.
As for Super Paper Mario, I can't wait. I loved the Paper Mario games, I love Mario platformers and I love RPGs with real-time battles. I don't see how I can lose. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

@32. Actually, yes, I think I'm completely accurate in saying what I did about the Nintendo's fault for the direction of the Wii.
Do you not think that Nintendo has some say so over what games end up on the Wii? They could and should absolutely goto Capcom and say, "Guys, RE4, great game, but this isn't what we had in mind when we developed the Wii. We're looking for new and original ideas, some AAA title, not ports of AAA title handled by one of your third tier development houses". Wii needs third party support from the big guns, using their big talent, making big NEW titles. If the news was that Capcom was developing RE5 (or Miyamoto forbid Bionic Commando 2) for the Wii, my ears would be perked. As is, I'll have forgotten RE4 is even coming to the Wii by this time next week.

that game looks terrible. Good thing I left nintendo after the gamecube generation. I hated paper mario for n64 and for gamecube, I doubt I will enjoy this one. Its just a bad game with a childish story line and stupid animation. And to think, the original paper mario was once gonna be the sqeuel to super mario RPG. Now THAT was a great game.
I also like how they bring a 1 player game to the guy in the commerical. His friend is just standing beside him like an idiot watching (dont these people own a couch?)

It's amazing how often people need to be reminded that developers were holding back and huge projects on the Wii until it was able to prove itself. Now that it has proven that it can sell to a large audience, the developers are rushing to get their projects in development.
It almost seems like the opposite of the Sony. Most of the developers hopped on board the PS3, but are now seeing that it's not appealing to an audience as large as the 360. So a lot of the projects that were in developement for PS3 are being shifted to multiplatform developement.
In the meantime, unfortunately, we're stuck with a bunch of ports. As far as the two Cube games that have been released on Wii (TP/SPM), look at it this way. Once you buy a Wii you do NOT need a Gamecube. Really, at all. Unless you want the Game Boy Player that badly.
But the whole port thing is an issue for all three consoles, since they're compairtively quick and easy to make. Heck, there are STILL 360 ports of PS2 games coming out. (Guitar Hero anybody)

Actually, it's douchebags like you, Mr. Johnson, who prevent progress in consoles. What do you like to play? Grand Theft Auto? Play GTA 3 and then San Andreas. They're almost exactly the same. New weapons and the ability to swim. That's it.
At least the Paper Mario series has evolved over time from an RPG to a platformer. And I for one am glad to see a new 2-D platformer appearing on consoles, especially one that's as original as this.
And what do you mean "has-been". A has-been is something that is old and worn out, and lost it's quality. As in, "The N64 is a has-been compared to the Wii." Or, "Mr. Johnson is a has-been in terms of intelligence." Oh, wait. You would have had to had intelligence in the first place. My bad.

Hey Steve Johnson:
Here’s a pic of my wife & I on our wedding day.
http://www.chillywillyfan.com/photos/wedding.jpg
I’m 30 years old, have a 17 month old son, a mortgage, and a career as a HS teacher. I rightfully so consider myself a ‘hardcore’ gamer since I’ve been gaming since playing Hunt the Wumpus on my TI994A computer and playing my console Atari 2600 and my black screen/white blocks Coleco Tel-Star.
You have to understand that the whole entire world (not just concerning gaming) doesn’t always fit into your limited perceptions of it. There are in fact hardcore gamers who love the Wii (such as myself) and are extremely excited to play SPM.

I love the posters of the joystiq comments,I really do. If the guy hates Mario games and thinks it's for kids, then that's what he thinks and he can express his opinion on here just as much as you can buy saying "FUCK new games today,I want more Mario". The only thing is that you can't handle the fact that people don't feel the same way about your oh beloved Mario.
I'm going to be honest,I watched the video and the first thing I thought was "ANOTHER MARIO platformer,we just had one for the DS". You say "well,at least they change and evolve". Now how is the guy who loves GTA saying that any different? To him they do change and evolve and to him Mario doesnt. Are you more right than him because you jerk off to Nintendo because "Nintendo means quality". You know what, not the people who don't like Nintendo's first party games it doesnt.

And "another" Mario platformer? New SMB was last year. Are you going to complain about how a Zelda game came out last year and now there's one coming to the DS? That's what game series do. They get new installments.

People like Mr. Johnson and I dislike what Nintendo has offered because we view it as a step backwards with gaming, and the fact that its taking off so well is bothersome because games that we like, namely games that require better specs, could be going the opposite way if Nintendo dominates. Developers go where the installed base lies, and we could see titles going in order of Wii, then ported to Ps3 and 360. Of course I am probably wrong, but there you go, at least I gave a reason for the hate.

I'd prefer Super Mario RPG to be re-released, then Paper Mario.
Star Fox 64 will keep my VC busy anyway.
