IM coming to Xbox 360, keyboard accessory this summer
Alright, so Gamespot's leakier than a colander full of swiss cheese, but now we've got the official details (from Microsoft this time) on what's included in the upcoming Xbox 360 Spring Dashboard update, due in one month beginning the week of May 7th. Integrating the 6 million Xbox Live users with the 260 million Windows Live Messenger users stands at the core of the upcoming update, allowing Xbox 360 users to communicate with up to six of their PC, Mac, or mobile phone bound friends at once.
To aid gamers in their instant messaging, Microsoft is also preparing a keyboard accessory for the Xbox 360 controller, which will connect via the headphone jack. The un-named, un-priced, and un-dated device, which currently exists only in the pristine renderings contained in the gallery below, is reportedly due "this summer." In the interim, an on-screen or USB keyboard will do the trick.
Also included in the Spring update: a new Achievement pop-up that displays the name and associated gamerscore value; a separate Xbox Live Marketplace blade to help organize the perpetually overcrowded service; the ability to begin watching incomplete video downloads; and a new auto-off function to put that system to sleep after it's done downloading. Oh, and Major Nelson's favorite new feature? Yup, the Dashboard will finally list what game is loaded in the disc tray. No more trial and error!
[Update: Xbox.com has been updated with a fairly repetitive list highlighting some additional features of the new update, including H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 2 video support (hrm?), WM-DRM streaming, the (now more informative) tray icon displays achievements and gamerscore for that game, and Xbox 1 games "show the name and image of the game."] Engadget has some additional details on the keyboard accessory, including the unfortunate news that the device prohibits the use of existing headsets and will come with its own.]

Ouch, that's it? No 16:10 support? No DiVx or avi support? No custom dashboard themes (custom picture for each blade)? Wow, I'm kind of disappointed, we have been requesting these things for a very long time and it just seems like they aren't listening. Only big thing this time around is the MSN Messenger add-on, I could care less if I get an extra blade for the marketplace.
REUYL @ Apr 9th 2007 12:23AM
Sweet.
So can you start putting 65nm CPUs and/or lead solder in your 360s now? Please? Last thing I need right now is a $400 doorstop.
nick @ Apr 9th 2007 12:24AM
This is way cool. Can't wait to get my hands on the controller text input device.
No more virtual keyboard!!
samfish @ Apr 9th 2007 12:25AM
"Oh, and Major Nelson's favorite new feature? Yup, the Dashboard will finally list what game is loaded in the disc tray. No more trial and error!"
Maybe I'm missing something here, but...like...do that many people not know what game is in their console at any given time?
Hannibal @ Apr 9th 2007 12:25AM
Umm...I have 16x10 support. Do you use a VGA cable? The option is there.
Arturo @ Apr 9th 2007 12:35AM
sweeeet. i play on a nice 42hdtv inch, so no 16x10 probs for me, i already have my keyboard that works great, the messenger deal sounds fun, disc tray info yay, auto shut off ftw too! hoorayyy all around good update for me :D
nick @ Apr 9th 2007 12:35AM
Hey, what driving game is that in the picture? The one with the 'flawless lap' achievement?
Thomas @ Apr 9th 2007 12:38AM
wow this is actually really cool. I wish the PS3 has something like this... Hmm, especially this Windows Live Messenger integration makes me feel like ordering the Xbox 360 Elite...
Killamajiger @ Apr 9th 2007 12:45AM
Also, why does it say that Major Nelson's gamerscore is only 100, and his rep is 3/5 in one of those pictures?
Ryan @ Apr 9th 2007 1:03AM
Great update but how do we plug our headsets into that keyboard when its only the jack? And will the keyboard shorten our battery life?
makeseven @ Apr 9th 2007 1:04AM
mostly really cool stuff. obviously the messenger is a big feature, which i intend to use a lot. im already shopping online to find a good wireless USB keyboard to use. i mean, the controller attachment is cool and all, but i would probably rather just the USB keyboard...but then, switching back and forth COULD get annoying...naw, i think thats what i'll do.
but most of the rest seems to be just minor tweaks.
nice that we can see the game now.
i really do like the new achievment thing. that was MUCH needed. i am very plzed with that.
autoshutdown is cool too.
overall it looks like a good update. i guess the only other big things people want is some more dashboard customization, and probably the BIGGEST would be multiperson voice chat. original xbox supported more people.
but overall im happy. we need to just keep bitching to get some of those other things in there. but lets keep it respectable guys.
LR @ Apr 9th 2007 1:12AM
Killamajiger, I suspect the picture is taken from an internal 'test' system
Otis Whitaker @ Apr 9th 2007 1:45AM
"No DiVx or avi support?"
The 360 is -never- going to support DIVX, or any non-windows or big-main codec (Such as MPEG, etc) codec. Why? Because Microsoft HATES open formats.
Uchendu Nwachukwu @ Apr 9th 2007 1:55AM
nick: That's Forza Motorsport 2, coming next month.
Otis Whitaker: This new update will support MPEG 4 and h.264 streaming from a PC. And no, Microsoft doesn't HATE open formats anymore than anyone else.

Xbox 360 is the next PS2, Sony is getting fat and losing the sexy body.
A0 @ Apr 9th 2007 2:43AM
These are all great but we're still missing the fast forward button for out music...
umm...hello?? @ Apr 9th 2007 4:27AM
hey! where the hell did my original comments go?? is the term "moron" too offensive? sorry, but anyone who can't remember what is in their ONE SINGLE DISC slot on their 360 IS a moron.
the keyboard attachment seems nice, but I'm not a fan of texting. but it's better than having to leave a full size keyboard laying around my living room.
dnzperson @ Apr 9th 2007 5:20AM
@Ryan: You can't plug in your current headsets, they won't work - but the keyboard does come with it's own one when you buy it, so you won't be left out.
@Otis Whitaker: WAIT A MINUTE! MPEG 4 (part-2) support is included in this update, as well as H.264 support. Check out the official xbox.com page for it.
Daniel @ Apr 9th 2007 5:21AM
Haha, Uchendu Nwachukwu - your beating me to it every time toda ;-)
Steve @ Apr 9th 2007 5:38AM
@ 18 umm...hello??
Somebody like Major Nelson will have hundreds of games floating around in his office. Chances are when he switches on his console he probably can't remember what he had in last.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Apr 9th 2007 5:43AM
"Maybe I'm missing something here, but...like...do that many people not know what game is in their console at any given time?"
I would guess that anyone who shares a console with a spouse, significant other, roommate, child or sibling would not always know what game is in the tray.
TasteyMaggot @ Apr 9th 2007 6:43AM
"...leakier than a colander full of swiss cheese?"
Seriously, what is that supposed to mean?
So, I'm picturing a colander. Now I'm filling it with swiss cheese, and... nothing's leaking. Are we pouring water into this contraption? Why?
Tiremfej @ Apr 9th 2007 7:56AM
Am I wrong? I thought I read the update will allow for up to six people in a give voice chat.
Steve @ Apr 9th 2007 8:09AM
@ 1 Matt
What do you mean no 16:10 support? What output is your monitor at.
Plus it won't be Microsoft causing 16:10 support it will be the game devlopers also. Do you know how much extra work it would be to implement another format for a game. It's not an easy job.
V @ Apr 9th 2007 8:45AM
I actually think a colander full of swiss cheese would hold the cheese in pretty well.
Jake @ Apr 9th 2007 8:46AM
This may be the best update since I've had my 360 a few months after launch. The keyboard thing is a good idea, though I don't text chat. I can see how it would be nice for people that do.
GunForHire @ Apr 9th 2007 8:55AM
And yet there's STILL no ability to preview themes or gamerpics, that people have been asking for since day freakin' ONE.
Killer Loki @ Apr 9th 2007 9:04AM
@16 - you're right, i just didn't realise it. The 360 is the next PS2 - old, creaking around the edges, way too many games (that you would want to play) for it, and so last gen.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 9th 2007 9:15AM
Killer Loki
Let me guess...hmmm....Thats either sarcasm or you are a Nintendo Fan. I will go with Number Two.
Comming from a guy that owns both 360/PS3 the 360 is much like the PS2 except for the last gen part.
mike k. @ Apr 9th 2007 9:20AM
why can't they just let us plug in a USB keyboard?
why why!!!
Sparkstalker @ Apr 9th 2007 9:37AM
@ 32
Umm...you already can. You have been able to since launch. The controller keyboard is for those of us who don't want a USB keyboard hanging off our entertainment center...
Frank @ Apr 9th 2007 9:42AM
@32 You can... I bought one of the Logitech USB PS2 Mini Keyboards for $9.99 at Gamestop and it works perfectly. I've been using it to type my messages from the dashboard since I bought the system almost a year ago.
Shadow Hog @ Apr 9th 2007 9:46AM
Typing of the Dead on XBLA. Needs to happen.
Frank @ Apr 9th 2007 9:54AM
i'm also holding out hope that, seeing as Xvid is a MPEG-4 based technology ,that somehow it might work.
long shot, but here's to hoping I can finally stop converting all of my damn xvid movies so they'll play on my xbox.
sheppy @ Apr 9th 2007 10:27AM
The achievement popup update is nice. As is the keyboard. How about a browser though? My PC is down and I've been using my PS3 which doesn't play well with my banking accounts (but the autozoom is damn smart). Nor does my Wii.
Frank @ Apr 9th 2007 10:48AM
This mask is way better...

I think I'll buy one and wear it to Burger King, complete with robe and demand free hamburgers.
Frank @ Apr 9th 2007 10:48AM
wrong thread
Matt @ Apr 9th 2007 11:43AM
Kinda reminds me of the old Atari Jaguar control pad... know what I mean?
Nick Spacek @ Apr 9th 2007 12:13PM
Well, he did say "leakier" not "leaking like", so leakier is just describing that this hypothetical swiss-cheese/colander hybrid would be leaky if in fact some sort of liquid were poured in.
Obviously we're pouring water over it to wash it...
Joe Smith @ Apr 9th 2007 12:27PM
Looks like a standard headset plug -- could just use any cell phoen headset -- or even better, the wireless Xbox one.
THH @ Apr 9th 2007 1:07PM
It would be great if we had a browser to use with this.....
HOVA uk @ Apr 9th 2007 1:47PM
no reason to change the pop-up when you get achievement.. looks a bit shitty the new looking one..
all u had to do to know the achievement details is press the guide button..
You fucking lazy bastards ruined it for us.. damn u... damn u to hell.. on the serious note.. the dashboard every year gets better.. so kudos to M$.
VampireHunter Z @ Apr 9th 2007 4:17PM
@43
It was needed. I don't want to press the guide button when a cutscene is about to start. Normally I would wait until after the cutscene then I had to figure out which achievement I just got. I think they borrowed the idea from Crackdown.
As for the QWERTY keyboard, anyone that owns a Sidekick, Treo, Blackberry or Pocket PC would appreciate it. Having a USB keyboard in the living room is just too cumbersome. Plus I don't want to put down my controller to type and then have to pick it up again. Working two input devices isn't fun.
Austiboy6 @ Apr 10th 2007 1:34AM
Guys these are not the only new features there saving more for later major nelson has even said stop bitchin
Ian @ Apr 10th 2007 8:54PM
When is microsoft gunna get a web browser on the 360? The Wii and PS3 have them.
Sidepocket @ Apr 11th 2007 12:04AM
Um, am I the only one to see how useless this feature is?
The 360 has a FRICKEN HEADSET!!! Why are they going backwards?
Dwayne Reed @ May 11th 2007 3:24PM
ok all ur comments are great and all and the update is great and all, but................ will this new keyboard work with Final Fantasy XI, i already see it has no CTRL button so that makes me think it wont
