Accompanying the revelation that the Halo 3 multiplayer beta is coming May 16th (OMG!), was the above Vidoc (video documentary we imagine) dubbed "Is Quisnam Protero Damno!" (Any Latin majors reading?) Included in its roughly 7-1/2 minute runtime is footage of two new defensive functions and something entirely different:
The bubble shield, first spotted in the Starry Night commercial
The just-revealed trip mine, shown taking out an incoming Warthog (and the player)
And a replay function you can share with friends, to slow down or even pause that perfect headshot (perfect for bragging rights)
So exactly which features are activated by the mysterious X button? In his update at Bungie.net, Frankie said, "There will also be new guns, vehicles and gameplay features to try – including the mysterious 'X-Button' functionality. But you don't have to wait to find out what that is, since you can now view part of its functionality in our latest Vidoc ..." Part of its functionality, eh? Need more proof? An alleged IRC chat sent in by reader Kritz had Frankie confirming, "x button deploys equipment for great justice. :) bubble shield and tripmine announced so far." So far, eh? What else is up that comically billowing sleeve of yours, Bungie?
I think people have a huge misconception about what "Next Gen" consoles are supposed to do. They're looking for significant and noticeable leaps and bounds over graphical performance over the previous generation. Noting that this alpha-phase graphics aside, Next Gen consoles are more about how much crap can you fit into a game: larger levels, more things in each level, better AI, etc. To those who have complained about it looking like Halo 1/2/(being) 2.5, I have to say, did you actually watch the video? Look at the improvements over game play that were shown. They balanced out the cheap kills via Warthog by adding cheap kills via tripmine. They let you cover your ass when you can tell from where you're being shot by giving you a portable shield. To be honest, when a game developer from another company comes out and says, "Wow, those guys aren't doing anything original," then I'll validate that criticism. As you would note from the video, a lot of time and attention has been put into creating a game that FOLLOWS the other two whilst still maintaining a NEW quality to it.

"Is" is the nominative singular, meaning it's a singular subject. However, in the above translation, "he" is the object of condemn, not the subject. Equally, "quisnam" would have to be in the accusative as well for this to be the correct translation (not to mention, quisnam is interrogative, so it would need to be used in a question, not as a relative pronoun, as the intrepid attempts have presented). Perhaps that's the intended idea, but not even close.

I don't know why but it just seems so incredible that I am bothered by you ignorant whelps and its not next gen bull... Instead of running into an area and having at max 15 baddies at a time a la Gears. You are going to run onto an entire field of battle. Ships in the distance having a dog fight will actually be there and if you really wanted to you could run the 5 in game miles and shoot them down if you were so inclined. There are saying there are going to be hundreds if not simply lots of fighting on screen the scope of battle is going to be huge.
There are elements graphically speaking that they have already added into what will be in the beta months ago that are not included in these vid clips. I honestly don't think it is from just a couple weeks ago... Neither is it fully impossible that they stripped off all the extra glitter so as to not ruin anything they havn't disclosed or because they just want to show gamepley....
Geo is really cool. He is already sure Halo 3, the sequel to two of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, will suck based on an Alpha build. With his next breath, he claims Crysis, the essential extension of the okay-but-not-great Far Cry franchise, will be the greatest ever, based on some good graphics. On a serious note, people claiming Halo 3 is underrated or will be a huge letdown are the same people that said the same things about Halo 2. And, they will most likely be wrong again.
As for graphics, Bungie has already said the graphics will not match Gears of War. They'll be good, but not great. Halo games aren't really known for their stunning graphics. They have good graphics, that's it.
And wtf we can't trust Bungie on this one. They've been working a long time on this game and the first two were very good. I am basing "very good" on the fact that they have extremely high meta-critic scores, sold tons of games and pushed consoles, and have incredible replay value. I personally didn't care for Halo2 that much. Halo1 was a lot of fun when it dropped, though.
As long as Halo 3 plays like Halo 1 I'll be happy. And from the looks of it even in Alpha stage it looks pretty snappy. The graphics don't blow me away, but I'd much rather have innovative gameplay and some cool new features than GOW graphics and not much else.
Halo 2 for me was tedious... gameplay was the same as H1, the cutscenes and storyline were BORING, and my favorite vehicle, the Scorpion, drove like a broken shopping cart and blew up at the drop of a hat.

Ah, I love the smell of baseless condemnation in the afternoon. Just wait until we actually get our hands on a decent build of the game before all the "it teh Halo 2.5, it's grafics suxxor" starts. Halo 3 will be fine, it will look beautiful, and people will still complain. I'm pleased on how it looks now, and knowing the Bungie guys, it'll turn out better beyond my expectations. No worries here.
Halo 3 is going to be epic, that's for sure (finally some meatier single-player content, lack of enthralling single-player was why i always preferred Metroid Prime, now, however, we shall see)
But it'll have a hard run to make "Game of the Year"
It's got to fight Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Super Mario Galaxy, all of which look like they shall be equally epic
In terms of sales, well, the likely top sellers would be Halo 3 and Brawl, but in terms of overall goodness, it's got some stiff competition
I was never really a fan of Halo or Halo 2. I have both games and spent a couple hours playing them, but they're just not much fun. Then along comes Gears of War and I'm all over it. 'Gears' is a fresh new concept and style, and the controls are flawless. I really hope Halo 3 can make a large leap in the style department and do something original to bring in people outside the core group of existing Halo fans. If it's just more of the same, I won't be buying Halo for a third time.
Ugh... way too Halo 2-esque for my taste (Yes I realize there was Halo 2 footage littered throughout the video). I was really hoping they'd slow the game down and bring back the strategy involved in the original Halo but this looks like Unreal Tournament with a Halo 1 coat of paint. Oh well, someday they'll make a Halo: Championship Edition *sniff*.... someday.
Ugh...if I'm not mistaken, Halo 3 is at/beyond the "content complete" stage which means the game has basically been locked down, and they've shifted gears towards the polishing aspect. I'm no developer, but I don't think it would take many months to implement some new shader effect, or 3D grass, or pimp out the water effects in a game.
From the sounds of the accompanying posts with the video, these scenes were taken from the Alpha a while ago, like even months ago. I think that for anyone's comments about the graphics to hold any water, they'll have to have had hands on experience with the Beta on an HD screen.
It's also worth noting that Halo has a certain artistic flavor. Very clean and simple. Halo isn't Gears, it's not attempting to come across as photo-realistic or showing every little detail. I'm sure the enormous battles in valleys will more than make up for the lack of pockmarking in a rock...

In this case, it's a bigger house(H3) built over a smaller one(H2), so sure, it has the smme shape, and structure, but it's not painted. It doesn't have any of the final accents or details put on that make anyone want to buy it, but at it's core essence, it's what is important. So if that doesn't help you i'll break it down even further:

"Will the FINAL build look even better than the beta and have even more stuff in it???"

Well people have their own opinions about things, but way too many people judging this footage are basing it from a fanboy view...on both sides, for or against it. And the truth is unless you play halo over xbox live frequently...your opinion doesn't really mean a %#$%^ because you really don't have a clue about the game. Sure you might play campaign and thats cool, but campaign is not the core of the game. Playing it on live is the new core of halo and that is why people love it. There is no other console game out there that does multiplayer online play as well as halo...period. The graphics and effects will add to the game but GREATgameplay features with GOOD graphics are better than bad gameplay with GREAT graphics.
i'm really hoping Bungie pulls out the HDR lighting for the final game and make this look more like the cg trailer. it's amazing what lighting and shadows does for a game, but right now, this alpha is exactly like watching Halo1 or 2.
one thing i'm already disappointed in, can't really argue here, is last gen's animations. the same thing happened with Splinter Cell: Double Agent. next gen graphics, last gen animation routines we initimately recognize from our last gen games.
will Bungie suddenly pop-in new animations and not just textures and lighting models? look how a player "picks up" a weapon. still with the mario-running and stick up the butt positioning?
the final game may not LOOK like unreal circa 2003, but i sincerely hope it won't move like it either.
I bet that the footage in this video is obviously at least three months old cuz there are not good lighting effects like shadows of buildings or some ares of the footage not even on master chief or the vehichles or trees. Just saying i dought this footage is recent at all, if you go to ign.com and look at images on page 8 those look just like the footage in the new vidoc and those pictures are from the egm magazine months back a couple of weeks before the nintendo wii came out cuz i read the articles in that issue waiting for the wii. So the graphic probably are way better then that given i believe that the video was made not even in this year but late 2006. I hope the beta is from this months progress and not from what it looks like in the new vidoc and that hopefully they come out with an online multiplayer demo before halo 3 comes out maybe a month or 2 after the beta but i dought that to cuz its halo 3 they don't need a demo to sell the game just look at the lines from halo 2 when it when on sale and i still play it best $60 dollars i spent so halo 3 line are going to be crazy. 360 will sell so fast next x-mas it will be unbelievable. I don't think 360 will get a price drop till after halo 3 at least not a huge drop in price cuz its system seller.

look at the money i may have to spend on video games if i buy mass effect, halo 3, guitar hero III, metroid prime for wii, gta ic, super mario galaxy, too human, and what ever other games come out for the christmas season plus a 60 dollar controllar for my wii and what ever new accessories coming out. so i better make and save money now cuz theres at least 4-5 games i must own out of those halo3, mass effect, mario galaxy if on schedule for winter, and metroid prime thats over 200 dollars. so thank god for game fly so i can rent the other game for 1-2 months and return them. just saying too many game coming out this year not that that is bad or anything but i am 17 and need a to save money for a car and i have a ds so thats going to have to take back seat for now.
Looks pretty fun to me. It may just be polished Halo 2 graphics, but it still looks nice. Can't imagine what the final build will look like.

I don't play fps' but I track how Halo 3 is doing, and it looks like these people are really trying to make somehthing great. I especially like the replay and camera angle options. I hope that if I were to buy an Xbox to say that I played this, that I could play against people who suck, because I have no idea what these guys are talking about, but it sounds good.

It IS Halo 2.5. Do you know what an Alpha Build is? It is the same game, with different features. In Beta stage you test it and work all the programming bugs out, and after that, you make it look nice.
Have ANY of you Halo-Haters seen the announcement trailer? I seem to remember saying "this IS what Halo 3 is going to look like" (it was rendered in real-time), and that announcement trailer looked pretty damn good.
So, if you are going to say something about how crappy this game is, shove it. It isn't out yet,and I'm sure Gears looked a hell of a lot like this when it was in Alpha.
