John Romero needs to STFU and go away.

He hasn't been relevant to the industry in almost a decade, or more. Why does anybody even listen to him anymore.

Unfortunately for the same reasons that the Wii is doing well I fear that the PCs will never be able to ultimately destroy the consoles. That reason being very innexpensive hardware and sales driven more by image and misdirection than informed consumerism.

Unfortunately there are tons of people out there willing to get ripped off...and a console is just 'cooler' in most of the publics perception.

I think the PC is hands down the best platform, but I doubt it will eradicate the console especially in the next 5 years.

Romero is apparently an idiot. He seems to be under the delusion that people play consoles simply because they are cheaper. That does play a role, but other facters like ease-of-use come into play. Also, unless you can convince people to start putting PCs in their entertainment centers then PCs won't be able to displace consoles. In addition, what makes him think CPU prices are going to come down? I've seen no evidence of that. I also see no signs that graphics cards are getting any cheaper. In short, I don't know WTF is smoking.

I'm pretty sure that gaming will go through cycles, PC -> Console -> PC -> Console. Hardcore gamers will move to PC when it's cheaper cause it does look and play a whole lot better than any console game. But there will always be both districts of gaming.

of course the pc will overtake the console. consider that all the xbox 360 controlers work on vista. think of vista and media center and cable card support. it's only a small jump from that to a "set top box" that controls your tv and plays xbox 360 games that's really a pc underneath. it's the future kids.

There's a 3rd one, Jody. That is, the attempt to re-engage Windows on a large scale basis in a gaming platform is mired in Vista, which is COMPLETELY fucked up. I'm not going to be so quick to denounce Romero, there are some very solid points behind his claim that the battle for the hardcore gamer will eventually lead to this kind of ridiculous firefight, but a lot of things will have to fall into place for that to happen. Right now, PC gaming is a complete disaster.

Why would the PC ever become bigger than consoles? A good gaming rig costs more than a PS3, and you need to keep it upgraded so you can keep playing the best games.
Consoles on the other hand don't need upgrades AND the games progressively look better. (And are cheaper than PCs)

Plus Mr. Romero has been SOOOOOO right about everything else. WHY Are we giving this washed up game dev the time of day?

When I no longer have to deal with crap like that before I can play my games, I might come back to PC's. Also, when I no longer have to spend 30 minutes to install a game, another 15 minutes configuring graphics, another 15 minutes configuring controls, another 15 minutes reconfiguring graphics when I get to level 5 that has more complex geometry etc than levels 1-4 and now I have to downgrade..........

First off, it does NOT cost 4,000 to play games nowadays.

I have the following:

AMD 64 FX60 Processor
MSI Motherboard
2GB of RAM
7800GTOC (soon to be an 8800)
Wireless
etc

All for under a grand. And I can also get games for free, "illegally" sure, but if I REALLY wanted to, I could do that.

On top of that, there's always updates to games. Whether it would be from the company, or from the user-base. There are maps to be made, and new skins designed all the time.

IMO PC > Consoles. You can't do HALF the stuff with a console you can do with a PC.

Plus, I can download pr0n. Can you do that on your console?

Well, I've always felt that the reason to stay away from PC gaming was that the PC was almost never located in the living room (which has changed), and it takes a lot of money to keep up with PC gaming.

When people buy a console, they know that, even though it costs $300-600, it will at least be able to handle every game that comes out for that console for the next 5-7 years. That is a nice assurance, look at God of War II, I bought my PS2 on launch, and 7 years later, I can play God of War II without framerate problems and incompatibility. Where I know that a 7 year old PC couldn't even choke on some of the stuff coming out right now.

People buy computers to do lots of things, and placing the computer in a living room makes it impossible to do those things. Consoles are specific to living room entertainment.

I don't see a reason why consoles will die out.

Get the Xbox 360 USB controller for your PC. Lay it next to your TV, hook the VGA up into it.(You said it was an HDTV so I'm sure it has VGA, if not you paid too much for it.) You've got your PC playing on your TV, and you can use the 360 controller to play whatever game you want.

Everyone knows the processor in the PS3/360 is a watered down version of the real deal.

My AMD 64 FX60 processor and Motherboard was only $300 total. And that processor is alot better than the 360 one and up to par (if not better) than the PS3.

And if you shop newegg and Fry's you can find amazing deals on graphics cards that put your consoles to shame. :)

hardware prices are dropping rapidly, but when has that not been true? anyone who can't see that there are cheep CPUs and GPUs out there isn't actually looking, or doesn't know what to look for. that has never been the issue with PCs, however, since dropping hardware prices has been a never changing constant. the biggest hurdle has, and will always been, compatibility. as soon as a user needs to start troubleshooting driver issues they start thinking to themselves, "if i was playing on a console i wouldn't have to deal with this shit." now for some of us those issues are worth the cost of superior graphics and audio but for most it just isn't worth the trouble. one of the main reasons the wii is doing so much better than the 360 or the ps3 is that it's NOT trying to be a pc in the living room. it's just a console and it just plays games and people love it.

Romero really isn't that smart.

People buy consoles because they're easy. There's no worrying about hardware compatibility or whether or not loading your latest game will cause other parts of the system to not work.

Not that I'm against PC gaming. It just seems to me that as soon as true 1080p TVs come down in price enough for most people to have them, and as soon as it becomes OK for publishers to market console games that require a keyboard and mouse (X360 and PS3 already support them, remember), there really isnt a reason to PC game. 1080p is like 1920x1080 resolution, more than I've ever had on my PC. I could buy all 3 game consoles for what it would cost me to build a "budget" gaming desktop.

I used to play games on my PC. I got sick of upgrading my Video card (spending $400-$500) every two years. Then Upgrading my Processor every three years just to keep up with playing games on a PC.

Now... I spend $400-$500 every 5-7 years for a new console and know that EVERY game made for that console will work on it.

I can also connect my console to my 53" HDTV and sit in my recliner and relax while playing games. I can do this from a PC as well, however, I would have to purchase additional hardware to support these features which again makes the PC setup even more costly.

Yup, use a 360 controller on the PC. Except now you have to install and configure XBCD because the MS drivers are crap and have both triggers mapped to the Z-axis. Oh and some games don't recognize axis movement for button presses, so now you really need XBCD. And if you have the wireless version and a receiver, well, you're shit out of luck, as XBCD doesn't support those yet.

Not to mention the fact that even once everything's set up and configured, you still need a keyboard/mouse to navigate Windows and launch the damn games.

Yes, it's possible to hook a PC up to a TV, but it certainly isn't as convenient as a console.

This is just silly...

And thanks to the rising cost of gas and availability of cheap hay, horses are expected to make a huge comeback against automobiles.

You want to know the real reason why gamers (even "hardcore" gamers) will prefer consoles? The freakin games work out of the box when you buy em! No patches, no putzin around with graphic card settings, no CTD's, the things just work.

If anything, the PC would be outmoded as a gaming platform if developers began to treat the consoles more like the sophisticated gaming engines that they are.

Put a keyboard & mouse on an X360 and develop sophisticated simulation and strategy games and the "hardcore" PC gamers will flock to the consoles. The game developers won't have to deal with the headaches of developing games that run on umpteen different PC rigs.

If UBIsoft, for instance, made games like Silent Hunter 4 for the XBOX or PS3, I wouldn't even bother with the PC.

"What about the modder community?", you say. It'll be alive and well in short order; MS already released a C# SDK for the x360. If you can program games for the consoles, surely you could edit files installed to the HD. If the consoles install config and 3D models to the HD, no reason why modders can't continue to mod with their PC's and install those on the console drives.

The real question is, "When will the developers wake up?"

I think this is the number one reason why PC gaming won't take over the home market. Games like WoW make money not only because you pay on a monthly basis, but because stealing it isn't an issue. PC gamers bitch and moan about how the PC is the best, yet they rape their own market with piracy. No wonder so many formerly exclusive PC developers (Id, Epic, etc) moved to consoles. A lot more of us pay for our games.

The Pc will not even come close to dethroning the consoles. The consoles took Sports, FPS and multiplayer gaming from the pc and ran with it. Even with emulation the PC couldn't steal the console thunder back. Virtual console, Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network are all providing everyones emulation needs without the complicated process of having to install programs and look for roms that may or may not work on the pc.

The PC has lost its place in the living room now that the PS3 and Xbox 360 provide music, gaming, browsing (in the case of the PS3 and Wii) and movies (PS3, Wii) over wifi or wired internet with Internet chat capability forthcoming (for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The pc is relegated to just being...., well a PC. (where i do most of my day work, browsing and emailing)

I have been on PC only for a while. Is it cheaper? No. Unless you count pirated games and generally free online play. However, as noted yes you get tons of free user-created content constantly. Just look up how many mods there are of Half Life 1 and 2, GTR racing, etc.

My main problem with PC is that the games seem boring nowadays. There are no relaxed platformers or fighting games or goofy concepts like paper mario or katamari on PC. I feel uninvolved just playing FPS, racing, and MMOs. I want a game that will put a smile on my face or be able to play as a party game, not counting You Don't know Jack from 1999.

Until MS really pushes the 360 controller or puts guitar hero on a PC, nobody who isn't great with computers is gonna care about what's there. Other than Sims, WoW, Guild Wars, and flight sims, PCs are bland. User created content is great but not very newbie friendly.

Cheap processors? Intel and AMD always try to keep the prices high by producing more and more powerful processors, and the games will always scale to require the more powerful processors. So, I don't see why the PC will become any more attractive in the future.

However, the PS3 and 360 loose many of the advantages that have given consoles an edge in the past... low price, single SKU, ease of use. The more PC-like they become, the harder it will be to fught off PCs.

This guy is talking a bunch of crap. As those core processors are cheaper, games will stress them more, and to stay ahead of the curve, you'll need to buy the more expensive processors. The gap may not be as wide as it has been in the past, but boutique gaming machines will continue to be boutique, and the consoles will continue to be the best bang for the buck when it comes to gaming.

Also his idea is flawed in the fact that as the chips get cheaper for computer, they're cheaper for console, which keeps the console under the price of the computers still.

Oh don't get me wrong. I absolutely love consoles. I play my Wii more than anything.

The thing that annoys the HELL out of me, is when console fanboys have NO idea what they're talking about.

4000 for a gaming pc!? WTF, if you buy a Dell where they gouge you.

Otherwise learn to build a PC. Its cheaper.

Oh and upgades (@plaid ninja) I've already reduced that cost. It's called: Torrents. 'nuff said. Free games (in theory) brings the cost of upgrades down to almost nothing.

@Miles

Don't get me wrong, the only games I "download" are from companys I don't like. (EA). Most games I have I purchase, if it's worthy of a purchase. If I'm still on the fence about a game (The Sims 2) I'll torrent it, and if I like it... I'll buy the first game. Thank God I didn't buy it, because I beat the game in less than 3 or 4 hours.

Oh and name a good game that Id has made for the PC in years. I enjoyed Quake 4 and Doom 3, but it definitely wasn't worth the cash I put down on it. They were one of those "pretty" games that tend to lead to nothing

@AirIntake

Wireless mouse will solve your problem. You can JUST use a mouse to navigate through windows. You don't need a keyboard to do that.

I agree it's not as convenient but the 360 is almost as big as my tower. Soon when the Xbox 720 comes out, I'm sure it will weigh as much as my PC and be just as tall.

#28, I have my Xbox 360 hooked into VGA, so I should then get rid of that? Also, my computer is probably 10 feet away from the tv, if not more. Not practical unless I relocate my computer, and then I need to use my TV as my primary monitor. Not gonna fly. So I need to get a 10+ foot extention cable for VGA, and also USB extenders to reach from the controller to the PC, and I suppose extenders for anything else I need to drag from the PC to the sofa.

Yeah, mucho cables sounds like fun.

I dunno about using a mouse & keyboard from the sofa, but i guess I can get a lap desk.
