Mortal Kombat II bloodies up the PS3 April 12th
When we last reported on Mortal Kombat II for the PlayStation Network, we said it was coming out in March. Obviously that didn't happen as we're now deep into April and you have yet to punch someone in the crotch with the power of the internet. To make up for it, here is a fabulous joke that is guaranteed to mortify your opponents online. What is Liu Kang's favorite drink?
...
WATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Hilarious. The ball breaking goodness arrives this Thursday as Mortal Kombat II will be available on the PlayStation Network for $4.99. It comes complete with online play, so be sure to brush up on your Mileena for when you run into jerks like us who just want to play Jax all day.

Took me a second, but I got the joke...nice
Pic is nice too. Can a game get much better than the old Mortal Kombat games? I think not.
Jonny McCormack @ Apr 11th 2007 8:00AM
Hahahaha that picture is awesome!
JSL @ Apr 11th 2007 8:15AM
$4.99 is an excellent price for a classic with online play. So many fond memories of this game in the arcades.
Geo @ Apr 11th 2007 8:16AM
Oh WOW this is the best Mortal Kombat game from all the series for me that is cool........
Neal @ Apr 11th 2007 8:17AM
Jax blows.
SubZero > All
Markster @ Apr 11th 2007 8:19AM
Okay, about the pic:
I understand that "Top" means top tier, and "Yes" means middle tier, and "No" means bottom tier...
But where do "LOL" and "NOOB" fit into it?
Zeruel @ Apr 11th 2007 8:19AM
The last sentence sums up the game perfectly - it's the "Mileena/Jax beats everyone" show. This is the main reason why I strayed away from MK2 as "the best MK of all time" and instead put that moniker on UMK3. While the tiering in UMK3 is not as balanced as SF, it still has enough play mechanics going on to make matches interesting and skill based. Playing top tier Jax or Mileena is not too hard. I give it a month before people get sick.com/never_want_to_play_again.htm.
I know I'm part of a vocal minority, but if you don't believe me come back to me in a month - By then the nostalgia will wear off.
@5 - If you really think SubZero can beat Jax, you have no idea how to play this game.
Kye @ Apr 11th 2007 8:21AM
Picking Johnny Cage was pretty much suicide.
Scorpion and Baraka were the shizzle tho, most people couldn't believe they lost so fast.
Good times.
Kye @ Apr 11th 2007 8:24AM
Zeruel, SubZ could SO kick the snot out out Jax!
Even Lui Kang could beat him!
*he acts all big and bad behind the safety of his screen*
Zeruel @ Apr 11th 2007 8:25AM
@6
LOL for Johnny Cage is because he's a fucking joke, and NOOB for Kitana because everyone does the same tired fan lift > Jump punch XX Air Fans > Square Punch juggle. If you were in a more packed arcade in late 1993 you saw this at least 20 times an hour.
Kye @ Apr 11th 2007 8:29AM
Yeah, would love to see this game on the VC eventually. With online play.
For the winner in a SF vs MK fight check out these vids.

David @ Apr 11th 2007 8:31AM
i remember jax sucking horribly... mileena too... sub zero, scorpion, baraka and raiden were the ones that were nearly impossible to beat if they knew what they were doing. all jax could do to screw around with you was that throw thingy.
and whoever said johnny cage was a joke... if you knew how to use him, he was sick. no one ever got close to me when i was playing as him. just throwing green flames and if they got close, shadow kick/uppercut until they backed off... repeat.
Virtua Fanboy @ Apr 11th 2007 8:31AM
This is the first time I've ever been jealous of PS3 owners, lol. I use Rayden and Baraka and niether one of them are in the MK3 (on Live Arcade). Maybe they'll port this after a while. Truly effing awesome that MKII is Koming out on any system.
Zeruel @ Apr 11th 2007 8:42AM
@12
That sounds great - in Theory Fighter land. Cage has too many delays in his special moves to be effective. He does have one of the better uppercuts in the game, but that's only good if you are playing against a total tool that *has* to land a jumpkick on you.
ducnguyen95829 @ Apr 11th 2007 8:49AM
This brings back great memories of skipping school in 7th grade and going to the pizza place and kicking all the other kids who skipped school to play. Great memories. Scorpion was my favorite. A quarter lasted me a long time using him. You just had to perfect the roundhouse kick and you were pretty much unstoppable.
Neal @ Apr 11th 2007 8:56AM
@7 Zerual
Haha, I have no idea how to play the game? Just because I like one character over anyother? You think the game is so unbalanced that Jax is the only way to win? haha, thats classic.
Hit me up on PS3 Mortal Kombat when I download it. my name will be MTFPD112
Kizzle @ Apr 11th 2007 8:58AM
I hope "No" stands for "no, these characters do not suck. Raiden = #1 and best. Shang Tsung = #1 and almost best. Baraka = #2 and best.
manhole @ Apr 11th 2007 9:14AM
you nerds are overanalyzing that picture
Geo @ Apr 11th 2007 9:18AM
does anyone knows who is the best fighter in Mortal Kombat 2..? well is a woman; Milena if you know how to use her......
Zeruel @ Apr 11th 2007 9:49AM
Neal - Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying /sarcasm. =P
Liking a character and a winning character are two different things totally. For example, I like using Dhalsim in Hyper Fighting, but I fall back on Chun Li or Ryu for matches I want to win. Sim has many matches that are next to impossible to win in a high end competitive environment.
Jax is not the only way to win. Mileena, on the other hand, is.
Yeah, I'm classic.
I'm also a poor bastage too, no PS3 for me until I land a new job and new digs. I need something I can turn my money around on, and PS3s aren't cutting it. You can't sell one for two grand like you could days 1 to 1.5 of system launch. :)
RDX @ Apr 11th 2007 9:49AM
And here I was thinking that nobody took Mortal Kombat games seriously...
baby sea tuna @ Apr 11th 2007 10:01AM
Best.MK.Evar.
Question is, why is it that the only PS3 games I want so far are the PSN downloadables?
Sony, I'm begging you...give me a decent reason to drop $600+ on this machine, PLEASE!
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 11th 2007 10:14AM

It is a sexy piece of technology. Once you open that PS3 box and see the beautiful glossy black paint you will fall in love.
Yes, it doen't have that many games but it will in the future. Im in love with my PS3 on a technological standpoint.
t_m @ Apr 11th 2007 10:16AM
hmm.. don't think i ever actually tried JAX due to him being such stupid looking character.. i always stuck with liu kang, scorpion and rayden.
Shows why i lost so much...
D @ Apr 11th 2007 10:55AM
wow, a the full MK2 game with online play and it's cheaper than 3 Guitar Hero II songs on the Xbox 360. I think it's time we start referring to MS as M$ again.
Cheap shots aside, this is a definite buy for me.
Also, @22 - I'm not sure if you've checked but there are some good games out for the PS3 now. My hands down favourite (and everyone who sees and plays it) is still MotorStorm.
baby sea tuna @ Apr 11th 2007 11:12AM
Eh, until they actually start bringing out some decent software (outside of a better than mediocre shooter and pretty standard racing game) I guess I'll stick to my 360 (not to mention the Wii that I rarely, if ever, play.) I'm a gamer and not really in the market for a high tech paperweight. Especially since I think the PS3 is ugly as sin, from a design standpoint. Still...I do really want one, and with tax returns burning a hole in my pocket, I just may break down and pick one up for the hell of it.
vR @ Apr 11th 2007 11:15AM
Neal: So bold! You've never been exposed to tournament-level MK II? You're in for a rude awakening.
There's a difference between playing at the local 7-11 in your isolated hick town, and playing against the best in the nation.
And for those of you who might laugh at people who take games seriously enough to play tournaments, remember what kind of site you are at.

Trut me. Once you open that brand new box and see the beauty you will change your mind. The system looks alot better when its standing up. Pop in some Resistance, sit back have a beer and relax. Nothing better.
Konny @ Apr 11th 2007 11:25AM
$5 bucks for a perfect arcade port with online and leader boards. Cool.
If this were Wii, you would get the gimped snes version for 10 bucks.. and nintenbots would somehow rationalise that its a better deal.
baby sea tuna @ Apr 11th 2007 11:40AM
Jack,
one of my buddies has a PS3 and I've played both Resistance and Motorstorm. Yeah, they're okay (I really do like the tank segments on RFOM,) but they just currently can't beat the lineup on the Xbox. Don't you own a 360, anyway? If you do, you can surely understand the bind I'm in...
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 11th 2007 11:46AM
baby sea tuna,
Yea I know how you feel. Its a hard choice. I jumped the gun to get a PS3 since I already had the 360. If I was you would wait another 8 months or so to see if they package in the new rumble controllers and price drop. Also your right, the 360 is the way to go as this point in time.
FrankTheCrank @ Apr 11th 2007 12:16PM
Can't wait for this!!!!
Time to spend a great kick ass time with an old friend, MORTAL KOMBAT II.
Nice!
orange.micro @ Apr 11th 2007 3:11PM
i used to whip so much ass at the mall arcade back in the day. dudes that were there with their parents from mexico were the best comp and really only comp. there was a tournament once where i won 100 dlls for 1st place, sadly it was a chaffed victory as only dumbass buttonmashers were playing me, the mexicans were nowhere to be found i was hoping theyd show up to the tourney so i could showcase my badassery.
dreemernj @ Apr 12th 2007 2:32PM
Jax and Mileena own this game so the "Yes" for them makes sense. Kung Lao is very good as well. Reptile? One of the worst characters in this game. Whoever put the "Yes" there needs to play some better folks.
susuamazin @ Apr 11th 2007 5:42PM
did anybody else download tekken??? wow im such a loser... ....
ive always wanted to know how do people get so good at games. I always try to be really good at a game so that i can truly compete against someone and almost always beat their ass and be competitive in online gaming. It just doesnt work for me. I mean you could play arcades alot (in the past) but there are so many things that a person does in their daily life. I, being 15 turning 16, go to school, work, do hw (important ones) and all the regular things in life (like taking a shower, eating, sleeping) yet i only get to enjoy games... not that much. But i really love games. what should i do, focus on one game?
end rant
Infil @ Apr 11th 2007 6:30PM
Neal, your comments remind me of the famous "Roy is better than Marth!" comments in Smash Bros Melee that were (are?) prevalent around GameFAQs when the game was released (mainly because Roy's up+B could be used to beat Cruel Melee).
The short answer?
No. No he is not.
Play someone who is actually GOOD at the game, and then I'm sure you'll start to see just how wrong you are in your opinions of the best characters. I'd love to see it, actually.
Zeruel @ Apr 11th 2007 8:10PM
susuamazin: the best advice i can give you is to find like minded gamers who have the same goals you do and all together. take losses as a learning experience and not as a failure. learn to utilize all of the exploits that a game offers. keeping it in line with MK, that would entail having a comprehension of the range of moves and the moves "hit boxes" (the area of the character graphic that will cause damage to an opponent) and know how to punish attackers with effective counter attacks. there's plenty more to keep in mind, but read further for an excellent resource...
You should not spread yourself too thin, so focusing on a few games is the right track to be on. Only a few players can keep themselves competitive over a multitude of games, and you will not be there right away.
some will tell you to learn complex combos, but that's not the case. *effective* combos are more likely to help you than knowing how to pull off an infinite.
Lastly, for more advice I'd recommend checking out the Book "Playing to Win" by David Sirlin. David is an accomplished Street Fighter player who now works in the gaming industry. He made the video tutorials that are on Capcom Classics Collection 2 for Super SF2 Turbo. While the book does focus on Street Fighter to a degree, there are alot of lessons that can transcend to many other gaming genres.

If you enjoy fighting games, you should go to Evolution, the premiere fighting game tournament in the United States. Not to win mind you, but to learn and see how the pros do it. There is alot of gaming to be had and I can assure you that it is an extremely fun learning experience. www.evo2k.com
Good luck.
