Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see the toolbar doing any auto-hiding. Is there something you have to do (or not do) to get it to hide?

I only played around with the new browser for a few minutes before I had to go to work this morning, but it's much improved over the previous version. I still prefer a PC for my web-surfing, but it's a nice bonus for the Wii nonetheless.

Relay: when you start up the browser go into settings. you can pick no hide, auto hide, or 'press 1 to hide' (the third being the one I picked. Its pretty sweet)

Wow, lots of hostile posts here. Apparently people are upset that you can download a browser for the Wii, at a low low price of $5 no less. People need to understand that Nintendo has paid Opera to build a custom browser for the console. This doesn't dispute Nintendo from trying to make a deal with Mozilla, or in the case of Microsoft which as it's own browser already. Someone has to get paid for that work.

As for people complaining about browsing through a console. Wow, there are bigger issues to deal with than whine and complain about that. Nobody has forced you to download this feature. Nobody has forced you to use this feature. Sheesh... what whiny babies.

While I've only used the browser for speed testing so far, I do see its merits, especially when more sites are specifically tailored for it, like online video...

@7. If you're looking for a decent Wii Radio, may I suggest Finetune? It's what I've been using since a few days into the initial release of the Internet Channel Trial Version and it hasn't failed me since. There's a few quirks that you'd expect from a free site, but otherwise it's great.

And I've only had the chance to play around for an hour or so on the new version, but it's already got several features I was hoping for (search function...w/ Google no less, enter URLs from any page, better favorites display, several levels of zoom, pressing a button to toggle tool bar)

All in all, I haven't run into any issues yet. Though I haven't tried entering passwords or actually doing anything that would test to see if it remembers stuff like that (or at least fixes it so somebody across the room can't see what I'm entering in the field)

Well just because its free doesn't make it good. I can put my shit in your hand and say "Hey you can have my shit for free"; but does that make it anymore than what it is, just crap in a warm hand?

The Wii has free online gaming but it still uses friend codes and its not as integrated into games as say the XBL platform. The PS3 has free online gaming and it is up to the publishers to decide whether they want to put up servers to host the games. Its all disjointed, and the truth of the matter is you get what you pay for. If you don't put anything in don't expect to get anything out. That is why getting online with either the Wii or the PS3 sucks.

And a browser in 480i/p give me a break. I might as well boot up my Dreamcast and put the Web browser disk in. Low resolution internet browsing sucks. Use a computer...

@LongshotX

Once again, whining. Seriously... we know what's at stake. You're complaining and repeating what everyone already knows. Now let the people make their own decisions and stop trying to sway everyone into thinking your way. If you don't like the browser, then don't download and don't use. Just get up, hop to your PC, and browse to your heart's content.

Incidentally, I know the whole "friend" code on the Wii sucks but I also know this limits malicious people from finding you. As for the PS3, I can't wait to hear all the juicy stories of online predators getting into Home to fuck with the kids. Sony will be patching that bitch up lickity split. Perhaps Microsoft got it right, albeit their micro-transactions sucks, and maybe Nintendo and Sony are trying something different. I don't know, but I'm willing to find out.

If you say PC games online are shoddy because of lack of a messaging service you don't have to alt-tab out for, you have never heard of xfire. If you ARE a PC gamer, you have xfire. Get your facts straight. Paying for an online service was lame in 2002.

I guess for a free web browser it'd be good. I currently can't get the wii online but I'll get it going eventually (going to phone the router's helpline to see if they know how to make wii compatible for the router).

Microsoft has had online console experience for over 4 years I think but nintendo has only had 6 months experience at most. Give them time and they'll get there.

@55

They fixed the password thing, that annoyed me too. When you're entering something into a password field the characters show up as asterisks now as you type them. I suppose if someone was sitting there watching each letter you click on they could still get it, but it is better than it was.

I'm taking this software out since it doesn't support keyboards yet or am I wrong. Either way I'm taking this software out. I will miss it though. Maybe when they have it promoted as free software for a short time I'll get it.

If you download it by the end of June, it is free forever. The $5 charge is just for suckers who can't find a Wii until July.

Somebody made LongShotX mad...

New Opera browser = fun

but i must disagree with Rubang B on this one, compared to the going rates for MMOs, $50 a year is totally worth it

Wii Online gets the job done, just with no bells and whistles, but if every game has a "rivals" mode like Metroid Prime Hunters, that would be perfectly adequate

I will never pay for the online portion of a game I already paid for. I was playing Doom 2 for free (except for the phone bill) by calling my friend's house modem to modem style in 1994. That's also how I played WarCraft 2. Hey Master X 24, when XBox Live gets a free online Mario Kart, call me.

And if you're gonna hype up your XBox Live, read this article.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle.net

Battle.net has more active users than XBox Live, and that's with only 5 games: Diablo, Diablo 2, WarCraft 2, WarCraft 3, and StarCraft.

Mr Khan, I demand your Wii code.

@33 Todd
" This doesn't dispute Nintendo from trying to make a deal with Mozilla"

They probably wouldn't do that, as Opera powers more than just the Internet Channel on the Wii. FWIW, the Wii Shop channel also uses Opera to do its thing -- it even sends an Opera user-agent string.

Lack of internet connectivity at the ol humble abode prevents me from
enjoying this just yet but I've been looking forward to it, nonetheless.Also, why
is it that so often these forums/posts/blogspots become rantings of
fanboys hurling whatever criticisms they can--those petty arguments
are irrelevant to the subject at hand and in no way constructive.To
those who are able to bring insightful info to this post (and
others), many thanks!

The Wii has online games because of the browser. It is a shame about the Flash version but that is out of Opera's and Nintendo's hands. Java support would be fantastic, and open up many more games.

Of course these games were made for PCs, and it is just a happy coincidence that they also work on the Wii. If it supported Java applets and had an API for multiple WiiMotes then there would be a huge home brew market starting right now.

Thanks to Opera's canvas support several of the puzzles at my games site (http://gamepixies.com) work, some of the board games should work soon too.

Not bad for a free (for the time being) add on.
