After breaking our hearts with a rather lengthy (albeit expected by now) delay of the return of Celda, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is slated to reach Japanese DSs June 23rd according to the most recent issue of Famitsu (image here). Importer gamers, get your orders in. Of course, if can't understand Japanese, you're still waiting until "Holiday 2007" to squiggle your way through Hyrule.
[Thanks, Josh]

Any mention of control options in that issue of Famitsu? More specifically, the option to use the d-pad/buttons instead of the touchscreen? Thanks!

Too bad they opted not to use the mildly clever DS naming scheme. I was looking forward to playing Zelda: Dantom Sourglass.

This game looks amazing. I'm more excited that it's a new-look top-down Zelda.

Great to see it coming out so soon in Japan. Problem is, I live in the US of A. It might not necessarily come out during the holidays though. I think July is when the game is reaching our shores, but you never know with Nintendo. Either way, somehow I'm not too excited about the game because of the stylus controls. Star Fox Command was ruined for me because of said stylus controls, and I pray that Zelda: PH doesn't suffer from the same fate.

So after all the whining about TP's graphics, we're back to hating the cell shading style again, I take it?

Nah, at first people hated the cell shaded graphics. But it seems its alot more welcome now.

I hate to say it, because I've been a Zelda fan for a long time, but I am just sick and tired of this series.

I never had a problem with the Cel shaded graphics in Wind Waker. My complaints were in the lack of dungeons and overall ease of the game. This looks really good and the controlls aree likely to be akin to Animal Crossing stylus controls, which are fine. The only place where they seem necessary is with the boomerang.

Dude...Celda is correct. Cel-shaded Zelda is Celda.
He just forgot "you".

I think they're outsmarting themselves by trying to use cel shading with such low rez polys and screen. It just doesn't work unless there's enough verts and pixels to work with, and unfortunately those aren't the DS's strong suits.
In short, it looks bad. Worse than FFIII bad. And that was bad. And say what you will about graphics not equating to gameplay, but when the environment and characters don't look right and stuff is hard to make out (is that a key? sword?), it doesn't help things.
I hope I'm wrong. DS Zelda is a very big deal and I'll be getting it as soon as it lands.

The look of FFIII doesn't bother me at all. Now, if I could just find the will to subject myself to a million more random battles before I make it to the next stairway...

It would be perfect for Celda to be for hand held romps and have realistic Link on the consoles.

I'm very excited to play this game. Mostly because it's the first Nintendo-developed handheld game in almost 15 years!!!
