Sony certainly could have gotten PS3 out the door faster and much cheaper if they went with DVD. Merrill Lynch estimates that each drive costs them $200 to $300 right now. So you figure they probably could have launched at $399.99, taking a smaller loss on each console, with DVD.

But then what would be the difference between the PS3 and the PS2, or between the PS3 and X360? a faster processor and GPU? More and faster memory? Bluetooth? Those are all good things, but nothing that really enables a new level of games. Maybe not in 2007, but at some point game developers will want to be able to have more than 8.5GB of space.

I remember Xbox developers talking about cramming their games onto 4.7GB disks because of all the surround sound high resolution audio they had. Why all the sudden is 8.5GB such a tremendous amount of space? 1080p is more than 5 times the resolution of 480p, and PS3 supports even higher resolution audio than Xbox did.

Nintendo thought it didn't need more than 32MB per game for N64. That worked out well. I know its a more extreme example, X360 developers should definitely start feeling some constraint a couple years in the future.

well, the PS3 w/Blu-Ray is already out and here. next year's PSN isn't. in fact its a year away..

also, being paid by Sony, you expect certain statements from Jaffe.

the reason this post is even here, is because devaluing Blu-Ray is certainly not one of the statements you expect from a Sony employee.

Blu-Ray should definitely have been dumped. Considering thirdparty developers, they're going to develop for DVD-9 capacity and Blu-Ray variants are going to be chock full of empty space. The only games that would benefit would be decent Sony firstparty titles...and there sure isn't many of those. Gran Turismo, God of War...maybe a couple others that are good and a ton of second fiddlers.

LaughingTarget:
It is funny you mention the high cost of content and procedural synthesis in the same argument.

Creating content through procedural synthesis is far more expensive than just using pixmaps.

I can get an artist to take pictures (or scan them) into a computer at a rate of 20 pictures an hour. At $60/hour, that means a texture costs $3.

But if I want to synthesize them, I need to scan the elements, mask them, the start devising algorithms for putting them back together into good-looking images. This will take hours per texture. That means these textures cost 40x as much.

Think of a woodgrain. I can put a block of wood on a scanner and scan it. Or I can look at it, scan a few knots, make some grain algorithms, then figure out how to place knots and grain to look real.

Think of other kinds of art. Stock photography is cheap to buy, cause it is cheap to make. Fonts are expensive, because they are procedurally synthesized and so have to be hand-written (essentially coded) by an expert.

The cost of making a game fit on DVD using procedural synthesis will thus be likely much higher then just shipping it on a BluRay disc.

Please stop implying that procedural synthesis is a cost or space panacea. You are saying it is being rediscovered. Ever stop to think why it was lost last time?

ok, ok I, My point is that, what with blu-ray, at least in America has been out selling hddvd 3:1 (please keep, "steaming media is the future" at the door)........and while it's premature to say that blu-ray is winning it's certainly in a better position then the HD-DVD

This guy stated an opinion that isn't really backing anything, one Sony employee thinks blu-ray isn't needed, another Sony employee says that it is says....but for some reason we are only focusing on this one and not the other?

My point is that it's just an opinion, if you believe that this guy opinion is right about blu-ray which isn't really backing anything what with it's sales against hd-dvd saying otherwise and massive studio support.....why take him so serious...........but if he believes and this is not me saying this but actually words from jeff that in a years time "ps3 will be the box to own"....but this side of his opinion is going ignored?

you're the first person to bring up HD-DVD at all. Jaffe (and the rest of us) are talking about low cost DVDs for games.

the reason we care about Jaffe's comment is because a) he's one of the most influential game developers in the industry right now, and b) its against the conventional Sony line. who he works for.

being a statement so directly outside the favor of his employer is what makes this sound like an honest opinion, and not just a PR friendly company line.

Jaffe may indeed believe that PSN will be better than Xbox Live next year, but that opinion is about something that hasn't happened yet so we have no reference to consider or dispute it.

his Blu-Ray statement is about a platform that already launched and has been on the market for months, so we can reference it and discuss it.

This David Jaffe Bashing proves one thing: That sony fanboys will bash anyone who disses on their console. And I mean anyone. If it was Kojima saying this, fanboys would be all over him. "Kojima? How the hell is he making games?" Get it through your heads fanboys, just because you work for sony does not mean you have to agree with everything they do.

Anyways, yeah I defiantly agree that Sony should have released the ps3 without Blu-Ray. Sure it's helping Blu-Ray sales, but it isn't helping the ps3 in the slightest.

These comments miss the point - Sony is a mixed media and hardware business which has "bet the company" on Blu Ray. The small point on whether this is actually necessary for gaming becomes irrelevant. Jaffe may be honest, but it won't help him.

i love how the same people who held Jaffe and Gears of War as a big reason for Sony's clear superiority over MS suddenly all know better than him.

you guys really don't see the irony in that?
