Prince of Persia rated by Germans for XBLA
Get ready for two big words. The German Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) ratings board recently tested a game called Prince of Persia Classic -- it received a +12 years of age rating. The Germans were being kind giving it that rating considering the difficulty level of the original game; they're sparing young gamers a lot of grief. Players who are old enough -- or unlocked this classic in their copy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time -- know what we're talking about. We wait to see when the American ESRB rates the game to confirm that it's not some kind of Europe-only XBLA exclusive. Having the original Prince of Persia on XBLA will show those young whippersnappers how good and easy they've had it since the Sands of Time.

Woo. Yay. Prince of Persia on XBLA.
I loved and hated this game in equal measure.
Rubang B @ Apr 13th 2007 4:23AM
Damn! I was hoping this could some day make it to the Wii. I loved this game. It paved the way for some of my favorite games ever, like Out of This World, Flashback: The Quest for Identity, and Blackthorne. If you have a 360, get this game. If you don't, get it anyway.
jimjo @ Apr 13th 2007 5:40AM
i seriously have never played a 'prince of persia' game. I dont know if it was my arab neighbors that repulsed me from it or the fact that i supported Sega when it came out. Either way i win now that it is on live.
Adam @ Apr 13th 2007 6:53AM
Holy shit! I used to play this game on my cousin's Apple Macintosh. I loved it. I didn't even mind dying all the time, because I was still young enough to find being impaled in a spike pit a novelty. I can assure you, Microsoft, if (or when) this comes to XBLA, you will have my 400 points. (And it better BE 400 points.)
Rob Accomando @ Apr 13th 2007 7:31AM
#3, it still could come out for the Wii. There was a NES and SNES version
Fostorial @ Apr 13th 2007 8:32AM
I wonder if it's just the German rating for it or whether the rest of Europe (I live in UK) will take it on too. Germany are super harsh when it comes to game censorship (actually have to change blood from red to green most the time!!) to the point where they are trying to ban sales and make it illegal to import violent (its a pretty cover all term) games!
But as I'm 23 and don't live in Germany don't suppose it matters either way. Prince of Persia coming to an XBox near me (hopefully)!!
Rob Accomando @ Apr 13th 2007 7:48AM
oops, I meant #2

They should include Karateka too, so people remember their manners when they fight.
And remember...
When all else fails, put your sword away.

I'm still a little confused about Wii/PS3/360 exclusivity with older titles. Can't identical versions be released on multiple platforms? (Unless they're first party games of course)
ahatter @ Apr 13th 2007 8:59AM
xbla is unstoppable!
0ldb0y @ Apr 13th 2007 9:20AM
That classic pic brought me back real good.
And then Rubang B has to go and mention "Out of this World."
All sorts of nostalgia up in this joint.
XBLA is the bestest.
SuperSneaky @ Apr 13th 2007 9:17AM
+12 ?!!
Tom and Jerry had more graphic violence that the origional Prince of Persia, AND that involved house hold pets plus many easily accessable items of death dealing homeware, as opposed to say, far away Persian Laberynths.
Sheesh.
I'm 600 years old but I look 18 @ Apr 13th 2007 9:38AM
To #4 "Holy shit! I used to play this game on my cousin's Apple Macintosh."
Wow, you and your cousin must be OLD. How old are you?
gir @ Apr 13th 2007 10:17AM
ahh, those were the day. What the hell? 360?
Ken @ Apr 13th 2007 10:49AM
First off, I thought the "BIG" thing about the XBLA was the fact that it was "Original" compared to the Wii's VC. Looks like Microsoft found out how to make more money, by following suit with Nintendo. Typical Microsoft move, of course. :)
(INCOMING XBOX FANBOIES!! "OH SHI, BUT AT LEAST WE ADD STUFF TO OUR GAMES!! ONLINE SCOREBOARDS FTW!! LOAL!!!)
Second, I for one thought this game was great. But it was undeniably hard. I think I punched the wall a few times as a kid trying to get through the first stage.
Why did they have to make it so damned hard?!
ZeroCorpse @ Apr 13th 2007 10:54AM
I just wonder why this game- although great- gets all the retro treatment and love, while its vastly superior brother Karateka is never seen these days? The story, gameplay, music, and progression in Karateka was much better than Prince of Persia. I'll never forget the first time I finally "won" Karateka, beat the bad guy, and approached the Princess to get my reward- Only to be kicked in the balls because I neglected to bow to her first, thus dishonoring her!
THAT is storytelling on a fine scale!
I love Prince of Persia (classic- modern sequels can bite my ass, though), but Karateka was my favorite of the two.

WTF? You make a stupid point and then try to stop logical counter arguments by claiming they are nothing but fanboy rants ahead of time? Anyway, XBLA has ALWAYS been a mix of classic and original/new content.
Ken @ Apr 13th 2007 11:22AM
@17
Actually I expected fanboy rants against my post for saying that the XBLA was slowly turning into the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.
Before the Nintendo Wii, please list any game that was released on previous consoles. Anything that's technically "not original" (Besides arcade games because this is the Xbox Live: ARCADE we're talking about here).
Jonathan Tran @ Apr 13th 2007 11:48AM
When will we get Flashback?
Aaron @ Apr 13th 2007 11:39AM
I was so obsessed with this game that I memorized the route through each level and managed to beat it in 9 minutes. I couldn't duplicate that effort after I had done it once, though.
Vidikron @ Apr 13th 2007 11:44AM
'Arcade' was never meant to indicate that only 'arcade' games would be released. The fact that it also contains original content blows that line of thinking out of the water. MS has made it clear well before the Wii even launched that they intended to port over classics from multiple plaforms (arcade, PC, consoles). Face it, the VC is in response to the XBLA, not the other way around.
Ken @ Apr 13th 2007 11:56AM
@20
So you're saying that there ISN'T a non-original game pre-Wii (lol fun to say outloud).
Why name it "arcade" then? Because it sounds fancy.
Face it, the XBLA additions of Castlevania: SotN and Worms and this were all in response to the VC success in making $$$... which, like all companies, Microsoft is all about.
Not saying the XBLA is shit or anything, because I enjoy both my list of XBLA and VC stuff. Just find it ironic that Microsoft is just NOW announcing re-releases of games.
Hasan @ Apr 13th 2007 12:05PM
I better buy some MS points.
Ben @ Apr 13th 2007 12:17PM
You guys are forgetting that jumping was accomplished by pressing diagonals:
Prince of Persia XBLA + Xbox360 D-pad= ULTIMATE FRUSTRATION.
Vidikron @ Apr 13th 2007 12:34PM
@22
You're not making any sense. All of the arcade games are re-releases. As are the PC ports like Doom. Hell, even this game was original a computer game (Apple II). You can't say arcade/PC ports don't count and then say, "Haha... MS is just copying Nintendo by releasing classic games". That's a completely absurb position to take. And, again, they announced console ports long before the Wii. Shortly after the 360 launched the had a promo video for XBLA that showed a Sonic game. Not sure what happened to that game, but the point is that ports of classic games from lots of platforms has been part of the plan for XBLA from the start.
Drew @ Apr 13th 2007 2:23PM
#22:
Before the Wii VC came about, XBLA had Gauntlet, Joust, Smash TV, Robotron 2084, Frogger, Galaga, Pac-Man, Street Fighter II, Time Pilot, Scramble, Dig Dug, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Contra, and Defender, in addition to a number of board and puzzle games that have appeared on other platforms before (and of course in addition to a bunch of original games). Games like Worms were in development before the Wii VC had "success making $$$". I don't see a change in Microsoft's behavior.
Ken @ Apr 13th 2007 4:22PM
@25 and 26
I stand corrected. I completely forgot about the games Drew listed. Though, "Contra" was the arcade version... and it was terrible compared to the NES game.
Good call you two. Thank you for correcting me. :)
Rubang B @ Apr 13th 2007 4:26PM
Flashback: The Quest for Identity was the best selling game in France!
