Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA and PSN announced
With 13 years of competitive play under its belt and counting, Super Street Fighter II Turbo is widely considered to be 2-D fighting perfected. A high octane, extremely offense-minded fighter, how is it that Capcom plans to improve upon perfection? By bringing in the comic masterminds at UDON to redraw the entire game, pixel-for-pixel.Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (wow again) for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN mirrors the same tactic Capcom utilized with their Hyper Fighting release - the goods you remember, only with online play. This time, however, Capcom is taking care of business in-house and utilizing the insight that 13 years of worldwide, top-tier competition has brought to the game.
While SSF2T HD is a pixel-for-pixel recreation of the game, they aren't ruling out making slight changes to the game. It will be lost on the average player, but when the faithful get a load of the slight but sexy frame tweaks, they'll freak out. And they will love it.
Capcom didn't have anything to show on the project, but they did say that the entirety of the game is being redrawn, from the character select, all the way through to backgrounds and endings. While it would be heaven in a download if they could also work in the original SSF2T, it is something they are currently considering. Capcom is aiming for a release this Fall.
[Update - If you were interested in seeing just how super this remix is, the folks at GameKult snapped a picture of the presentation slide during the announcement. Capcom to Sammy: "In yo face!"]

Come on Capcom, give us Street Fighter 4 already.
Donutta @ Apr 13th 2007 8:17PM
I'm not sure if I am getting this correct, but does this mean that they are going to be redrawing the sprites, etc? Does this mean that we can expect SF3 graphics or better?
And for the love of God, Capcom, make sure the announcer and Guile don't sound like such high-balled wimps.
omgJOHN @ Apr 13th 2007 8:19PM
This is awesome! It's about time they replace the sprites with something of much higher quality.
I'm going to hope this means a new trend as Capcom slowly remakes all the sprites for their games with higher resolution stuff.
Uchendu Nwachukwu @ Apr 13th 2007 8:23PM
Whoever came up with that name should be shot. Though the original was called Super Street Fighter II Turbo, so I guess they didn't have much of a choice.
Reminds me of Gillette razors. "Mach 3 Turbo Champion," anyone?
Borat @ Apr 13th 2007 8:23PM
I want SF Alpha 3 with online play on the Wii! (I only have a Wii).
LongshotX @ Apr 13th 2007 8:27PM
Good finally we get high resolution sprites! And how about porting MVC2, Capcom vs. SNK, and Powerstone to XBLA. Thank you very much.
LongshotX @ Apr 13th 2007 8:28PM
Any figher on the Wii would suck even with the classic controller. Sorry.
KC @ Apr 13th 2007 8:29PM
Ok, if the in game sprites are redrawn, GREAT, I'm all for it.
Its not to clear on this.... so I'll pass judgement later.
Diskoboy @ Apr 13th 2007 8:29PM
So how many times are they gonna delay this version?
I'll pass.
Diskoboy @ Apr 13th 2007 8:30PM
And I'm with longshotX - How bout some XBLA Power Stone (1 or 2) with 4 player online play?
It's all about Power Stone 2 adventure mode.
Al2x @ Apr 13th 2007 8:31PM
I like how the actual link for RSS feeds and the title for the page doesn't include the "PSN", It's only "Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for XBLA announced"
Borat @ Apr 13th 2007 8:33PM
"Any figher on the Wii would suck even with the classic controller."
Care to elaborate why? Though I haven't tried it yet it looks good enough. (I'm currently using a GC controller for VC games).
One problem: you have to have a remote just to use the classic controller.
NintendoFanbot @ Apr 13th 2007 8:41PM
"Any figher on the Wii would suck even with the classic controller. Sorry."
I didn't think Capcom ever considered that when porting SFII onto cellphones.

i hope they fix the lag because sf2 is unplayable over xbl....
OGHowie @ Apr 13th 2007 10:00PM
How do people get excited for this when the lag over XBL isn't playable?
Ian Von Porter @ Apr 13th 2007 10:04PM
MKII plays great over PSN... so, online is doable.
And, this will never appear on the Wii.. cause its HD (Shiggy sez HD dont matter, remember?) and the only SF games you will get are gimped SNES ports... with no online of course.
Randy M @ Apr 15th 2007 7:56PM
I just hope this version of Street Fighter II has an acceptable level of difficulty. I thought SF II for XBLA was impossible to beat, with characters pulling off specials with no lag.
I also hope they'll give us Power Stone, it'll be great with my Dead or Alive joystick. I would love it if Capcom would also give us some Strider.
LongshotX @ Apr 13th 2007 10:13PM
"...only SF games you will get are gimped SNES ports... with no online of course."
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oniel @ Apr 13th 2007 10:32PM
Capcom should throw in an update to the Morrigan sprite just in case they decide to ever use the character again.

Online Gaming for the Wii, LOL I've never heard of such a ridiculous idea. It's ok kiddies, when you grow up and get a job you can buy a big boy toy like an XB360 or PS3:)

"Oh my bad...I forgot I can't speak bad about the Wii or I will be attacked by Fanboys. Sorry guys, do you except my apology?"
Let me copy the most direct responses to your comment:
"Care to elaborate why? Though I haven't tried it yet it looks good enough. (I'm currently using a GC controller for VC games).

"I didn't think Capcom ever considered that when porting SFII onto cellphones."
Who was attacking you?
Opportunity to respond with meaningful dialogue is wasted on your knee-jerk paranoia. I have to wonder why you are paranoid in the first place?
Could it be because you post flamebait? Well I never.

"cause its HD"
Sprites are sprites. The only difference is resolution. The Arcade-Console ports worked the same way.
Though the best improvements I bet would be the frame-count of the actual animations, which is awesome.
orange.micro @ Apr 13th 2007 11:33PM
damn i was expecting to read posts that showed exceitment over this. well i am excited this is gonna kick ass, FINALLY! in HD with online play no less my wet dreams have come true. well kinda, im still hoping for sf4 but that prolly wont be coming out till the end of the mayan calendar.
gir @ Apr 13th 2007 11:31PM
@Korben
lol.
Shut the hell up korben! I've played this game when I was a kidd on SNES. You're forgeting that this game came out for super nintendo.
Oh, here is one for those Devil May Cry babies
Oh nooooooo, no fair capcom, how can you stab us in the back, this game came out for nintendo first, waaaaah waaaaahhhhh, you guys are traitors. I'm never buying a capcom game, EVER! I hate you capcom. WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
This game is for everyone. A lot of us grew up on this game, and its probably the main reason why most of us like fighting games.
So shut your mouth up.
Vidikron @ Apr 13th 2007 11:38PM
Looking at the slide in the update posted in the article, it looks like they are really doing a very nice update. BUT they should quit wasting their time with SFII and put SFA3 on XBLA already!! Why not an HD remix of that one? Sure, SFII put the series on the map, but everyone knows SFA3 was the pinnacle. So what's the deal Capcom?
dsub @ Apr 13th 2007 11:40PM
this will be badass. to bad capcom doesn't hold the marvel rights anymore. Because marvel vs. capcom 2 on XBLA redone in HD would be amazing as well.
orAngeMicro @ Apr 13th 2007 11:50PM
dsub, Vidikron
both those titles would be really sweet as well as cap vs snk 2 id love to get all 3 with online. here's hoping someone at ms is "listening" to us as fans as they've claimed in the past to do.
NintendoFanbot @ Apr 13th 2007 11:53PM
I think the worst thing about this is that there isn't going to be an HD Dan. :(
gregory mitchell @ Apr 14th 2007 12:33AM
I thought i was SF biggest fan, but damn after all these years Im just at a point where enough is enough. Stop this shit already. Refresh the whole IP or just trash it. Theyve run it into the ground. At least MK took a break for awhile. damn know when to say WHEN.....JEEZ!!! Unless where getting some new fighting styles and all new moves(not just one each) then just kill it already.
silverfox @ Apr 14th 2007 2:23AM
FCUK, WTF IS THIS. IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR CAPCOM to make super street fighter vs. capcom 3 turbo HD bluray remix??!! all i want is a online version of street fighter vs. capcom, which is also cross-platform with the 360 and ps3 so then we can once and for all settle this shit. maybe some 3vs3 action to spice it up a bit.
Ninegauger @ Apr 14th 2007 2:36AM
No deal until there's an acceptable controller available... like the Anniversary Collection controllers those were pretty good.
STEEL @ Apr 14th 2007 3:09AM
Fighting fans don't give a damn which console it's on as long as it sticks to its roots so anyone talkin sh*t because it's only goin to 360 is no real fighting fan in my book...frekkin losers...
Velops @ Apr 14th 2007 3:38AM
The only real benefit to redoing the sprites is that the game won't have the annoying artwork frame that so many classic games that appear on XBL get.
There is also a risk that fans will not like the changes made to the animations. Hardcore fans have honed their skills based upon the the exact number frames for each attack animation. This includes hitbox sizes, reaction, and recovery times. If the change is noticeable, it could completely change the tiers for competitive online play.
Lag can still be an issue as well. MK2 isn't a good example of honed online play. That game has never had the same amount of technical subtlety that SF2T did.
NintendoFanbot @ Apr 14th 2007 3:52AM
"Fighting fans don't give a damn which console it's on as long as it sticks to its roots so anyone talkin sh*t because it's only goin to 360 is no real fighting fan in my book...frekkin losers..."
LOL. You could replace 'fighting fans' with 'true gamers' and it would have the same meaning, and by that I don't mean much at all.
Personally I'd prefer the Arcade experience. But the chance for such heroism is lost to the ages. :p
innocentboy @ Apr 14th 2007 4:52AM
can't wait to see it, the Udon comics are mad dope,
but yeah, bring on the Street Figher 4!!!!
Paul Gale @ Apr 14th 2007 7:17AM
I'm really looking forward to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. I've been a big fan of Udon's work with the Street Fighter comic book series, as well as what they've done with DarkStalkers, Rival Schools, and the Street Fighter Legends: Sakura story line. This game is just a sign of thigns to come...
kevinski @ Apr 14th 2007 8:43AM
Wow, I must say that it'll be nice to finally have some redrawn sprites, especially in the SFII line of games. I was hoping for something more along the lines of SFIII in terms of graphical upgrades, but this will do quite nicely. They really need to beef up the animation a bit, as well.
LinsoN Chan @ Apr 14th 2007 10:58AM
Numero Uno!
Been there done this game! Will love to play this again in HD!
LongshotX @ Apr 14th 2007 11:48AM
Hey guys I found some images of the sprites for the new HD version. Talk about big difference. Check them out....rendering in HD makes a huge difference.

36. No deal until there's an acceptable controller available... like the Anniversary Collection controllers those were pretty good.
what are you talkng about? there are TONS of "acceptable" controllers out there. if you were such a stickler for "acceptable" controls you would want a real arcade joystick like we used to play with back in the days at the local arcade and not the anniversary collection controller.
RockLoi @ Apr 16th 2007 8:52AM
I don't get it, why does the slide have a super sexy looking sprite above "Hyper Fighting"? Whenever I played that game it looked like "See how long we can delay this release without changing squat" (ugly).
Couple more things to rant about... why the hell do MS think that they can just piss all over aspect ratios. If I'm paying a fiver or however much it is for a game I can pick up for next to nothing at my nearest retro store (and use with better controllers, might I add)I expect to play it at my aspect ratio, being offered to stretch the image to ugliness is not a consolation.
That goes for all the lazy arcade ports, don't fob me off with "enhanced mode" which is the poorest smoothing filter since the first beta of zsnes. Homebrew developers have made some damn good filters, if you're not gonna bother prettying it up even though you're selling thousands at up to £10 a game at least use a smoothing filter that doesn't make it look like I've just plugged my 360 into an SDTV.
Final comment: About time. Capcom have been riding off the success of SFII with more ports and re-releases than even Square have had the balls to do, updating little to nothing, making sequels quickly abandoned for unaltered ports of the originals, takes them nearly 20 years and XBLA for them to update their sprites? Maybe XBLA isn't so worthless after all.
(By the by if I sound extremely critical of XBLA it's because it's the reason I bought my 360. Zero good 360 games at the time, but a digital distribution service giving us GeoWars and Marble Blast in HD that I thought would easily make the purchase worth it. Bought my 360 and been unimpressed with New X-racer and Galaga, "Cloning Clyde", a barebones Worms and a much delayed SFII with laggy online and no new challengers, Alien Hominid has been it's only success in my eyes.)
Damn, that was long, seems I've been bottling that rant for a while. ^^;
LongshotX @ Apr 14th 2007 5:51PM
I enjoyed Worms as it was the first time I ever played it, I especially love GeoWars (score is : 922,140 or something like that) and I'm constantly trying to get to a million, been playing for less than a week), I enjoyed Castlevania: SotN (first time playing), Marble Blast, Lumines, Assault Heroes, Hexic and Uno. Sure it ain't perfect but I like it much better than the VC games.
LongshotX @ Apr 14th 2007 5:52PM
Oh yeah Alien Hominid is cool and that Fireworks game is okay.
