In yesterday's post by Bungie staffer Frankie, what we already knew about Halo 3's mysterious X-button functionality was confirmed: It will be used to deploy equipment like the trip mines and bubble shields we saw in the recent Vidoc, and as of now is, appropriately enough, called Equipment. There's also some hinting about a third item that's yet to be revealed; we're hoping for nunchaku.
Frankie also dismisses worries of the bubble shield unbalancing gameplay as he emphasizes how rare equipment will be on the battlefield. So you can put your dreams of building a bubble shield fort back in your fan fiction where it belongs. There's also a heaping portion of the requisite undermining of all the video you've seen so far and reminders of how much better everything is in the game's current build, which will hopefully hold true when we see for ourselves in May.

Your talking about FPS and the power of PC mods but talk about Crysis as the GOTY PC gamers are waiting for? NO only graphics whores that are directX 10 crazy. Crysis will bring nothing new to gaming besides a new engine and better graphics.
I wouldn't even consider you a real PC gamer looking forward to that. Unreal is a much more trusted franchise and the new Unreal will have a hell of a lot longer lifeline than Crysis with the mod community.
But hey you wouldn't know that because you're a disgruntled PS3/Wii fanboy that's trying to pose as a PC gamer?

I really don't care about Halo.
What I want to know is if Yukes/THQ will WISE THE HELL UP and allow custom soundtracks in the next Smackdown vs RAW, or if they'll just tweak the graphics and change the roster again. I'm getting sick of these tiny, incremental changes each year in EVERY franchise. The X button function in Halo 3 is one of those things. Ooh! You can do everything you could before PLUS ONE.
Gag.
I want to know if the publishers will ever get wise and release more western-style computer RPGs for the consoles. There's no reason Neverwinter Nights II couldn't have been available on the 360. There's no reason the PC version of Baldur's Gate couldn't have been done on the XBox... But instead we get a Gauntlet-style hack-n-slasher? WTF?
There's no reason the Sims 2 can't be translated perfectly to the 360. Why do they release watered-down versions of PC games? Why bother?
Where's the console port of City of Heroes? Where's the console port of Star Wars Empire At War?
Instead we get Halo. meh. More running around getting sniped by cheaters does not sound fun to me. If I'm going to play an online FPS, it will be Team Fortress, not Halo. Hell, I'd rather play The Outfit online than Halo.
Who give a frack what the X-button does in a tired-ass FPS? Gears of War was typical and boring, and Halo will be too.

Obviously people missed my earlier comment, where i clearly praised some of the new features...
I'm not with the whiners here, saying Halo 3 sucks, i'm just saying that, unlike Halo 2 in 2004, Halo 3 has some incredibly stiff competition this year in terms of anticipation alone
Now, in terms of sales, the competition runs between Brawl, GTAIV, and Halo 3, but that's one its more likely to win
And Brawl is in no way confirmed for 2008 (although i almost wish it were)
(and some people think Nintendo fanboys are the most sensitive, Halo fanboys are just as bad)

I could be mistaken, but wasn't 2004 considered one of the best, if not the best, years for gaming?

SOLUTION: to people saying HALO 3 is overrated
GTA IV- will be released on 360 and ps3 mostly everyone who own those consules will have GTA IV at one point very few won't get it so it will sell near 15 million copies eventually like the past 3 GTA's have sold any where from 9-14 million copies on ps2 alone and now its release is multi-platform. Won't sell as much as HALO 3 on day one but will sell more in the end cuz it is multi-platform and mostly everyone knows what it will be like unlike HALO 3 people want to know how the story ends.
HALO 3- will be released between september(if they want to release it before other major releases like gta iv or super mario galaxy) or november(like all other halo releases. Will break day one sales again and pass halo 2 on day one sales with all the hype. Here is this from wikipedia:
HALO 2 Anticipation for the game was high; three weeks before this release, a record 1.5 million copies had already been pre-ordered.[56] Massive lines formed at midnight releases of the game; the event garnered significant media attention.[57] This was followed by releases on November 10, 2004 in France and other European countries, and November 11 in the UK. The game sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to US$125 million in its first 24 hours on store shelves, thus out-grossing the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as highest grossing release in entertainment history.[58] As of November 9, 2005, exactly a year after its release, Halo 2 had sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.[59] Official Xbox Magazine reported that the Halo 2 launch was the biggest event in entertainment history, grossing $125 million on the launch date alone.[60] The game sold 260,000 units in the United Kingdom in its first week, making it the third fastest-selling title of all time in the UK. On June 20, 2006, Xbox.com reported that more than a half-billion games of Halo 2 have been played on Xbox Live since its debut; it also reported that 9.2 million units of Halo 2 have been sold worldwide.[61] From the day of its initial release and up until mid-November, 2006, Halo 2 was the most popular video game on Xbox Live, even after the release of the Xbox 360; its position was only recently surpassed by the 360-exclusive Gears of War. Halo and Halo 2 are still some of the most played games for the Xbox console. If that doesnt show that people love this game then i guess go and see the lines when HALO 3 release at midnight or watch the news.
SUPER MARIO GALAXY- All I can say fot this one is i am buying it like everyone else who has a Wii will if it is released this year then i will just get super smash bros.
other ganes coming or possibly coming this year that are trying to compete against HALO, GTA IV, AND SUPER MARIO GALAXY:
MASS EFFECT(june or july release)
Bioshock(august release)
KILLZONE(who kows the release)
heavenly sword(before christmas)
TOO HUMAN part 11 of trilogy(maybe summer)
METROID PRIME(after june but before Christmas)
SUPER SMASH BROS.(before Christmas)
LAIR(july)
MADDEN(august)
FORZA(may)
LITTLE BIG PLANET(maybe this year)

Anyone thinking Halo 3 is not the biggest game of 2007 is kidding themselves. It IS the most significant release of the year, and the most important game for the Xbox 360 console. This game will completely destroy the sales of Super Smash Bros and Metal Gear Solid 4. Give me a break...those games are not on Halo's level. Mario, while an icon, is not the king of gaming anymore. That title is firmly in the Master Chief's grasp, and it is his to lose. In fact, the ONLY game that will even come close is GTA4, but even that will fall short of the Halo 3 juggernaut due to the small installed base of the PS3. People fail to realize that while games like Smash Bros and MGS are popular in the gaming community, Halo has transcended that. It is the standard for FPS in the console world. There are millions and millions of gamers out there that haven't even bought a new console yet that will buy an Xbox 360 just to play Halo 3. There is nothing Sony has that can battle this game toe to toe, there just isn't. GTA4 would have been that game, but not anymore since it is not exclusive. Games like Heavenly Sword, Lair, and MGS might be great games, but those games do not have the mass appeal of Halo, at least in America. Until the Halo series missteps and people lose faith in it, the beat will go on. The only reason great franchises fail to continue their success is if they either pump out too many sequels in a short period of time, causing gamers to lose interest, or if the series loses the cool factor that made it successful in the first place. Thus far Halo has not made either of those mistakes. Halo is a multiplayer game first and a single player game second. While Halo 2 was not a great single player game like Halo 1 was, the multiplayer went above and beyond...setting new standards for online gaming in the console world. It still has yet to be touched by anything on the market. If you are sick of Halo 3 now, just wait until the game comes out...it is going to be everywhere.

i agree with most of ehat u said but GTA IV will eventually sell more than HALO 3 though it will break the HALO 2 records on day one sales and probably sell anywhere from 12 to 20 million copies over all but GTA IV will sell more cuz it comes out on both ps3 and 360. GTA San Andres sold around 14 million overall and HALO 2 sold around 9.5 million copies but still is the most played game online other than world of warcraft. Also the single player campaigne is more import cuz Bungie had the trilogy story basically all wrote out before HALO 2 AND 3 and I want to know how the trilogy/world ends cuz you know what the multiplayer is like with exception of added weapons or vehicles.

Halo is incredibly popular. Gamers from hardcore to casual can find enjoyment in it. More hours of Halo2 were played than any other game last gen, easily. Halo3 will have good single player, multiplayer, and sell to 75% of the 360 userbase or more. It is a freaking monster. Just deal with that and get over yourselves, haters.

did someone just assert that GTAIV is going to sell 15 million copies, and that everyone with a 360 or PS3 will have it?
damn, that's just delusional. If you look at it, GTA San Andreas sold 14 million on a platform that was incredibly well established, vs. two platforms that only have about 13 million between them, and that number couldn't be more than 17 million by the end of the year
Or, if you look at it as a %, San Andreas sold to about 15% of the PS2 userbase. Halo 2 sold to about 35% of the Xbox userbase by comparison, and Smash Bros to about 33% of the GC userbase
And no, Brawl is still coming out in 2007 until more information is given...

Instead of picking your grenade placements and firing away with the pistol you can just drop the trip mine to foil a warthog. Where's the challenge in that? GTA 3 which came out a year after release of ps2 in usa which i don't know how many ps2's were sold in the first year in europe, usa, and japan but there were shortages so maybe 15 million ps2 were sold by gta 3's release and gta 3 sold 11 million so like i said it isn't impossible for gta iv to sell around 15 million copies eventually. HALO 2 sold around 9.5 million copies and original xbox has around 26 millionish system sold as of now so in 2004 when HALO 2 came out there was mabe 20 million systems owned, i don't know but HALO 2 sold alot but the gta 3 game sold better with about the same systems sold as xbox did when halo 2 came out for the xbox.
also i think the halo series is better then gta series cuz those are all the same gameplay with no story and get boring unlike halo 2 which still has anywhere frome 40,000 to 70,000 people online everyday which is the most out of any console gameout until HALO 3 comes out of course

True, it is multiplatform, but a much larger percentage of Xbox owners will buy Halo 3 than GTA4. PS3 just doesn't have enough installed base to make much of a difference yet. GTA and Halo are both games that appeal to an American and European market for the most part. In those territories, mainly America, the Xbox has sold much better than the PS3 thus far. GTA4 sales on the PS3 will be good, but we are talking a percentage of an already small amount of consoles out there. However, you are right that GTA4's numbers will be incredible combined between the two. I guess it could be close, but the Xbox will be behind most of those sales because Xbox owners tend to buy more games...that is, when our consoles are actually working of course.

Yeah I kind of got off track there. I was merely speaking to the fact that PS3 doesn't have a game as big as Halo 3 on their platform. The only game that is, is GTA4, which is also on Xbox. I wasn't speaking about GTA4's overall selling power in that statement.

This whole X-Button hype just seemed stupid from Day 1. And after this story, I'm going to have to agree with #2. That is a pretty blah payoff. It'd be like saying that they won't release what the control stick does because they didn't want to reveal any new vehicles.
As far as anticipations goes...this game is no more highly anticipated by 360 owners as Brawl is by Wii owners. But Brawl at least still has secrets and potential news that will be worthwhile down the line (new characters, modes, online play...)
I'd be far more interested in Halo 3 news if I actually got to hear a bit about the story. We basically were given Halo 2 without having any clue what the hell would be going on going into it. And I think that hurt it quite a bit in the long run.

I am a manager of an EB games.....there are only 2 games this year that will require our stores to open at midnight to satisfy all the pre-orders, when the game launches....WOW exp, and HALO 3. my store alone has 125 pre-orders (6 months before launch!!!)
I will also state that we have exactly 1 pre-order on MGS4...mine. Unfortunately although crysis look sick, and will most definatley be a critical hit, this will not translate into strong sales because of hardawre requirements.

Pretty much grabbing everything from the best of PC games and giving it to console. Replays of all your matches (i.e Battlefield), better Matchmaking system (which Halo 2 perfected before any PC game), a more balanced weapon system (which only few FPS's have), it's still the only fps to have highjacking, and Bungies still keeping things under wraps. So we won't know everything until the beta comes out but what it seems like Halo is becoming more of a balanced competitive game than ever before.
My previous post was meant to be taken like this. "If your going to compare a FPS to Halo compare a good one". Crysis is another Farcry and will be nothing more than to show off a new engine. Halo 3 will be a bar set for console FPS and PC multiplayer on what should be expected. Plus it'll be the new competitive FPS for 4-5 years to come.
When taking in all that only a n00b would compare Crysis to Halo. I do both PC and Console gaming and for someone to do a random PC game name drop to feel like they made a point is stupid to me...

This is "news", but it's the kind of "news" that is better suited to be found on a 360 fan site or halo fan site.
I mean, it's a F^*&!NG BUTTON!
Who the GOD DAMN HELL cares?! It's not like this news is going to convince anyone to buy a copy of Halo, furthermore a 360.
"Hmm...well, I wasn't going to buy a 360 (furthermore Halo), but now that I know what a button on the controller does...well...please! TAKE MY $460 DOLLARS!"
To put it more into perspective:
Sonic appearing in Brawl=NEWS.
What a button does in Halo 3=NOT NEWS.
That all being said, I really don't give a shit one way or the other. I just felt like wasting yet another two pennies by tossing them into the endless void that is the internets.

@80 : You clearly know NOTHING about Crysis if you think it's just Far Cry with a better engine. Please go inform yourself. Here's a good place to start (although it's a bit old now) : http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25134639&msg_id=279861217

The X button isn't news because we already knew what it did. But, an extra character in Brawl is not much if any bigger than a completely new gameplay element in Halo. To me, Sonic in Brawl is no bigger than any other character in a new version of a fighter. And I am a long time Nintendo fan, old school Sega hatr, and Smash Bros. fan.
I also hate when people compare Crysis to Halo. There couldn't be a worse comparison. Crysis is just to show off a new engine that takes advantage of the next gen of PC hardware. I would be willing to bet Halo3 has more new gameplay elements compared to Halo2 than Crysis does to Farcry. Crysis is all about the gfx. Bungie has already basically said Halo3 won't have nearly the best graphics on 360. Crysis also won't be played by even a quarter as many people as Halo3.
Bungie has hinted at a lot of stuff that will be different in Halo 3. They have said there will be battles with tons of enemies at once, way more than previous Halo's. They have hinted at much improved AI. Hell, they have a bottomless pocketbook, a basic formula that works, and 3 full years of development with a dedicated team on their side. Why the hell wouldn't Halo 3 be something to look forward to.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of run n' gun shooters and am looking more forward to Forza II, Mass Effect, Fable 2, and Bioshock. Halo3 is probably my 5th or 6th most anticipated game on 360. I prefer games like Gears and Tom Clancy shooters over games like Halo or CoD. But I can still respect the great things about Halo, especially related to console shooters.

Sure, Crytek says the gameplay will be revolutionary. They have some cool ideas and big promises. But I am personally hyped about the game because of its graphics, not its promise of great gameplay.
Crytek hasn't made that many games and they are primarily in the business of selling engines. Far Cry was their other big shooter. Overall, it was a pretty good game, but not great or revolutionary to PC genres the way Halo is on consoles. Halo games have been really fun to play, imo, without being the best graphically.
My point is that if Crysis had good but not great graphics, we really wouldn't be that hyped about it. Halo3 has shown nothing but crappy alpha graphics, and people are hyped as all hell about it. I just hate when people compare Crysis to Halo3 because the only similarity between the two is you shoot projectile weapons at stuff.
We aren't hyped about Crysis because Far Cry was so damn awesome and Crytek is striking again. Halo3 is hyped because of Halo2 and Halo1 being loved by many. Crysis is hyped because it looks sweet graphically. It would be different if Halo3 was on PC and actually competed with Crysis at least.

To everyone:
This is quite a bit of news to anyone who has followed the production of Halo 3 through Weekly Updates. Since early last year, there has been "talk" of a new feature in Halo 3 tied to the X Button. This is the first time at all that any news of the feature has made it's way into the mainstream beyond pure speculation.
Brief summary of post: It's news.
