Punch Out, Virtua Fighter and Bonk hit the Virtual Console
Today's Virtual Console releases all have one thing in common: a love for violence to the head. Whether it be Bonk using his noggin as a weapon, Mac delivering that eleventh uppercut to Glass Joe or Akira Yuki landing three extra backfists on the nose of his opponent, these releases are sure to spark violent tendencies in children under the age of two and one-third.
Punch Out!, already out in Europe, is Nintendo's entrant for today's triumvirate of releases. The full serving, available on US Virtual Consoles at 9 a.m. PT, includes:

The game drought is over, baby. VF2 > VF5 ftw.
I'm joking. It is still kind of weird to me that Genesis games are coming out on a Nintendo console. It used to be Sega and Nintendo fanboys. Now it is Nintendo/Sega fanboys or something.
I don't care about paying for retro games personally but it is weird nonetheless to me considering I was a SNES fanboy in the day.
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Apr 16th 2007 10:04AM
Punch-Out! is one of those games that's never been equaled in 20 years. OBVIOUSLY a must-have. Nintendo brings the TKO from Tokyo this week.
sheppy @ Apr 16th 2007 10:08AM
Dear Sega,
I have your precious blue rodent. While you may not care about the state of his games, certainly you acknowledge that he still has value. So it's with his life that I demand you release another blue haired hero on VC. If I do not have the chance to buy Wonder Boy in Monster Land soon, I shall be forced to shave Sonic. Good luck trying to explain the Britney look in your next game.
Neal @ Apr 16th 2007 10:16AM
Punchout would have been worth it if it was Tyson, and not Mr. Dream.
sheppy @ Apr 16th 2007 10:20AM
Neal, it's $5 and only one extra boss.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 16th 2007 10:21AM
Nintendo gets Punch Out! Thats BS! Time to play my gf's wii.
Ken @ Apr 16th 2007 10:33AM
Time to die Glass Joe!!
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Apr 16th 2007 10:33AM
Not to get all immature Jack, but I think someone should let you know, unless you live in a hentai comic, that would make your "gf" a guy. The only game on "her" VC is the Crying Game.
Neal @ Apr 16th 2007 10:33AM
Sheppy, I know its only 5 bucks, but they should have included the origional game, not the revised one.
FTL

They had to. I'm sure Mike Tyson had something to do with the reason they didn't include him.
zakchase @ Apr 16th 2007 10:45AM
I already can play Punch-Out by firing up Animal Crossing. What I really want is Super Punch-Out.
sheppy @ Apr 16th 2007 10:50AM
"Sheppy, I know its only 5 bucks, but they should have included the origional game, not the revised one."
Umm, Mike Tyson's Punch Out was the LATER revision, not the earlier one. This is the original. It even features Mr. Dream.
We probably didn't get Mike Tyson's for two reasons...
1. Nintendo no longer has the rights to the Mike Tyson name.
2. Nintendo no longer wishes to associate themselves with a wife beating/raping abusive exconvict who was permanently banned from professional boxing for biting a fellow competitors fucking ear off.
Keep in mind, number 2 is mere theory.
hegemonyhog @ Apr 16th 2007 10:54AM
"Nintendo no longer wishes to associate themselves with a wife beating/raping abusive exconvict who was permanently banned from professional boxing for biting a fellow competitors fucking ear off."
Does this mean we won't be seeing Namco's re-release of Pacman Jones' World?
Dammit.
Blue Sam @ Apr 16th 2007 10:58AM
I want the acrade Punch-Out!! on VC.
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Apr 16th 2007 11:09AM
Sheppy, I'm not trying to say that you're wrong, but...you're wrong. NES Punch-Out! featuring Mr. Dream and sans Tyson was released domestically in 1990 following a contract dispute. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! was released in 1987. Previous versions had been in the arcade, but the domestic NES version with Tyson came first.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 16th 2007 11:14AM
Yoshi
So the best games to come to Nintendo this gen are VC games.
Andrew Hagan @ Apr 16th 2007 11:15AM
I'm sorry you guys are up in arms about Tyson and stuff, but if you can take a minute from your complaining, I just gotta say.
That's the most hilarious comic I have ever seen.
Ok, you may resume bickering.
Zac @ Apr 16th 2007 11:16AM
way to cut up a Perry Bible Fellowship comic.
if anyone thought the above image was missing something, see the whole thing here.

"but I think someone should let you know, unless you live in a hentai comic, that would make your "gf" a guy."
Ahhhh....sweet, sweet futanari. Between that, furry porn and vore, life doth not get much better.
Anyway, I'm on a VC hiatus until I beat a few other games I've gotten already. I haven't even beat aLttP yet.
FOR SHAME, SAMFISH! FOR SHAME!
kelekod @ Apr 16th 2007 11:18AM
Actually I thought Mike Tyson's WAS the original, and they made that important update when that fiasco happened. I don't understand why Mr. Dream would be the original, then they put the ear biter in a game.
so that theory wouldn't make any sense.
To this day, I haven't beaten Tyson yet...
Damn, time to get another points card...
iconmaster @ Apr 16th 2007 11:19AM
Punch-Out is fine and all, but Europe just got ActRaiser... when do we get to play god?
sheppy @ Apr 16th 2007 11:45AM
I'm saving points for Wonder Boy...
sheppy @ Apr 16th 2007 11:45AM
Also, turns out I was wrong....
Yoshi Likes Boys @ Apr 16th 2007 12:35PM
Jack: Try harder, the best games that ANYONE gets this generation will be on the Wii's VC. :)
Angusailde @ Apr 16th 2007 12:38PM
Hooray for Perry Bible Fellowship exposure, in any form!
Joshua @ Apr 16th 2007 12:41PM
PBF.

"Punchout would have been worth it if it was Tyson, and not Mr. Dream."
Mr. Dream is essentially a palette swap. Redraw the face, change the skin color, done. The game plays exactly the same.
Yeah, it would have been nice to have Tyson, but expecting that to happen at this point would be pretty unrealistic.
In for Bonk 2 as well, I enjoyed the first one when it was released and forgot that it was a solid game back in the day.
VF2 (version Genesis) though? SCREW that nonsense.
Knoxximus @ Apr 16th 2007 2:37PM
If you like Wonder Boy, you'll LOVE Dragon's Curse.
Steve @ Apr 16th 2007 3:24PM
Sheppy I hope you're wrong otherwise I'll never get to play the NES classic "O.J. Simpson's Football".
serotoninzero @ Apr 16th 2007 4:10PM
If I was ever to purchase a game on the virtual console, it would be punch-out. But I've got it for my DS, GBA, PC, etc. already so. Wait, I lied. If they release Mother 3, I'll buy it. Aha. Yeah.
Rubang B @ Apr 16th 2007 8:40PM
Mr. Dream replaced Mike Tyson in the game when Mike Tyson got his ass replaced by Buster Douglas in real life. He lost the title and the contract with Nintendo. He didn't become a convicted rapist until a year later. Losing the contract with Nintendo started his downward spiral, first leading to rape and later ear-biting, which is even worse.
Julian Emmett Turner @ Apr 17th 2007 2:35PM
Elendil of Penny-Arcade's forums had this to say:
"[Punch Out!!] is a rad F_ing game ... like Shadow of the Colossus with the colossi replaced by racial stereotypes and the thought-provoking plot replaced by a fat guy on a bike."
Nailed it.
