My Xbox360 doesn't read discs when I stand it vertical, so I lay it flat.

That being said, I have played the hell out of a good chunk of my games for hours on end. My girlfriend has worked over Viva Pinata pretty well too. All my games are pristine for the most part.

I wonder if people know not to rest their game cases on top of the system? I learned that from working retail with the PS2. If you put weight (ANY) on top of the system while running a game, it screws with the drive disc / laser positioning and trashes your games. I'd imagine the majority of people getting this problem probably play it horizontal and lay the case on top of the system.

All of you users that have had no problems with your 360...patience, patience. I remember those days...the "I got a good one" days. Don't think your console is bulletproof because you take care of it better than anyone else. It's bullshit. My 360 is in an ideal open space, a cool environment, and I still got the ring of death in just 5 months. It's sad. I have never had a scratched disc though. Maybe I will be lucky enough to have my refurbished replacement box have this problem...fingers crossed!! MS has no fucking clue what is wrong with the 360. If they did, the refurb boxes would not keep getting RCODs, yet they consistently do. I have never seen anything like this in the electronics world for a device this expensive and this popular. It's it literally mind boggling. I have the extended warranty so I know I am covered for a long, long time, but it is still incredibly disappointing that MS put out something of such poor quality. The thing plays the best games, no doubt, but it would be doing even better without all the negative press. Unfortunately, it's all justified.

Blaming Xbox 360 owners for a problem that Microsoft is responsible for, all the in the name of brand loyalty, is both immature and despicable! This isn't the first video posted of Xbox 360 consoles damaging discs. It's pretty widely known that the console can destroy discs even in the horizontal position; there's no need to switch it to a vertical position.

One person even realized that the console would scratch his discs as he walked across his room -> minute vibrations through the floor triggered it. Hell, even the PS2 didn't have this issue. You can switch the console between vertical and horizontal positions without any problems. Luckily, Sony and Nintendo are very good hardware manufacturers; Microsoft should stop being so stingy and actually invest enough money when designing their own. We already saw what kind of shortcuts they took with ED-RAM, and how that's negatively affected 360 devs.

I notice that in 50 comments, NOT ONE PERSON said that Joystiq was biased, in reporting this.

In other words, you're all admitting it. You got taken.

It's not all bad, when the Commodore 64 came out, the best 8-bit computer ever made, their disk drives sometimes did terrible things, and me and my friend fried one once just by rubbing our feet on the floor and pressing the spacebar (hey, we were 12!)

So I don't care too much if a manufacturer screws up, and replaces the damage, even up to the 4th time...

But you have to ask...

How many ps3's have had to be replaced? Up to the 4th time?

First of all, I've never even heard of ps3's having to be replaced.

Or Wii's, for that matter.

Even if they were, it would be ONCE.

I have no problem with the 360 as a machine.

But I do have a problem with a greedy manufacturer who screws over people who paid good money for their product, then have the audacity to attack other console manufacturers who frankly make better products than them.

Yes, the 360 controller is the best plastic you will ever see on a console.

But an optical drive that physically touches disks?

I mean, simple honesty would suffice here:

WARNING:

DO NOT ORIENT YOUR XBOX360 IN A VERTICAL MANNER! KEEP IT WELL VENTILATED, AND KEEP IT HORIZONTAL.

We wouldn't be offended by this. So what if it can't play vertical?

But why can't you just be honest and tell us?

I want every console to win, but geez, right now my money is on PS3 and Wii, and all I own right now is a Commodore 64 (the later one, with the good disk drive, after all the bugs were worked out, hee hee!)

I can't trust the 360 to put any more discs in it and have to consider returning/replacing it in some manner.

This is a BS video......not to mention tons of urban myths about Vertical vs. Horizontal.

IMO....it'd probably be more likely to scratch with horizontal as the disc is resting IN the platter.

4 XBOX 360s.....that are played PLENTY....all are stood vertical....all are from Launch day.

ZERO PROBLEMS. No Red Rings of Death, No Scratched Discs....all have 3 year extended warranties...Just in case (as any early adopter should know to do).

Only thing that hasn't worked was GUITAR HERO II....which I promptly returned and will wait till everything is "FIXED"

So everyone....QUIT YOUR WHINING. Shit Happens.

This has happened to 3 different discs for me... It produces the disc read error. Interestingly, I've often found that the 'scratch' can be wiped off in warm soapy water. The problem in my unit seems to occur when the 360 spins up the disc at strange speeds. There's definately something up with this model of disc drive. For the people who claim the 360 is fine and it's always the user's malhandling, well... think about what you post before you post it. It never ceases to amaze me the sheer number of people who go to any length to defend the manufacturer. If it works fine for you, great, but that doesnt make you the de facto standard. This issue has been all over the internet for a while now, but this is the first time there's been some hint of an admission of the problem from microsoft.

http://forums.xbox.com/8125617/ShowPost.aspx

http://forums.xbox.com/8225054/ShowPost.aspx

I've just watched the video and its a pretty sound method of testing it, it doesn't matter that he moved it from horizontal to vertical, as he wasn't looking for scratches then. No doubt when he used the black marker technique he didn't change the orientation, and that's when the scratching occured. This fault exists, and people blindly denying it and accusing people of mistreating their machine can do one. I'm just gonna sit back and wait for someone to accuse me of dangling my 360 from a rope to demonstrate gyroscopic stability. That or attempting to molest it.

I love my Xbox360, but I gotta tell you. I think the dvd drive they put in those things are BS. 1st my Gears of War disc got all scratched up when I accidently knocked it over while it was on. Then more recently while I was playing my GH2 I lifted the console up slightly to remove a plug for another machine and the same damn thing happened to me.

I know a few of your idiots out there are going to say user error, but come on now. How many dvd/cd devices out there has a problem when you move the player while the disc is still spinning? If a 1990's portable cd player can play without issue's, why can't MS make a 2000's gaming console without issue's?

I had this problem months ago with my 360 and a copy of the last NCAA football game. I keep my 360 horizontal in a well ventilated area with nothing around it (it is on it's own shelf). I'll do a walk through of how it happened, thought it has been a few months.

I put the game in like normal and it started up fine. I told my friend about the online real-time updating 'sports ticker' thing and went to the part of the menu where you turn that option on.

At this point, my 360 completely froze. I let it sit for a couple minutes until it became obvious that the software had locked up (the guide button would not work).

Through all of this I never once touched or moved my xbox 360.

I then cycled the power by using the power button on the 360 itself (since the guide button was unresponsive).

The game started up like normal but when it got to the part where it was loading the title screen it gave me a disc error that I had never seen before.

I ejected my game to find that it now had a circular scratch on it from the 360. The game has never worked since.

When this happened I posted about it in the Xbox forums and nothing ever came of it. I have not had a problem with any other Xbox game since and I have played a good number of them. I still have the game and have considered calling MS about it numerous times since I hardly got to play the game before it got scratched up. Also, if the problem is in the design of the system I would rather get a unit a little further down the road that has this problem fixed.

I purchased my 360 a month after launch and have had 9 discs rendered unreadable with the circular scratches. At first I thought, perhaps, it was user error, and that somehow I must have moved the 360 while it was running. 8 discs later I now know it's not me. I was told by 360 support that I should stand the unit up-right as apposed to horizontal... still the thing scratches my discs. Most recently my GH2 disc was ruined... totally ticked me off, and on top of that I have one of the guitars that have the whammy bar issue. My luck sucks.

I wonder if the bass from my surround sound would cause the disc to vibrate enough to scratch the disc? It seems like horrible design if a bass hits from a shitty sub woofer would cause this though. My original XBOX never had this prob... neither does my Wii.

There is a fix to the disc scratching however... I've found those CD repair kits that buff scratches out of discs do a great job and remove the thick scuff marks. Then the disc plays fine... until the 360 scratches it again :)

My Wii (sitting in horizontal position) scratched circular patterns on game discs. Nintendo warranty repaired the Wii. I think a small percentage of DVD drives will always have this problem. It is not Microsoft or Nintendo's fault, just statistics.

My 360 has put perfectly circular scratches on four of my disks, rendering each of them unplayable. NEVER has the xbox been moved from the well ventilated position it started in. I've owned many gaming councels since Atari, and I assure you this is not a result of user error.

Some of you are lucky to have a well-running xbox. Be warned that my xbox's problems didn't occur until a year after purchase.

FFS, when will people learn that just because their particular machine runs fine, this doesn't necessarily mean the same must be fine for everyone else.

Anyone who genuinely believes this is a small problem that's not caused by the hardware but by people mistreating their 360's is plain ignorant. There are far too many people complaining about such a specific issue for that to be true.

What's more, where do people get off on implying that we're abusing our machines or flat-out lying, when they know nothing of the treatment or condition of our 360's. Fuck these goddamn fanboys. Grow up.

I was given a brand new XBOX 360 for my birthday in January of 2007. I bought Madden 2007 on ebay and played it vigourously for about 1 month. Then, during one of my gaming sessions, the machine started to make a strange noise, then stopped and a message appeared on the screen that said there was an error with the disk. I ejected the disk and there was the "Ring of Death."

I called XBOX (I couldn't return the game because I bought it on ebay) and they told me that the ring was due to the console moving during gameplay. They said that it was not necessarily my fault, but that Microsoft has concluded that it is not a flaw with the hardware. The customer service rep explained that, sometimes the disk spins so fast that the console may move.

Now, I use a wireless controler and sit about 5 feet away from the system, so there is no way that I inadvertantly caused the console to move. The only possiblity is that the disk was spinning so fast that the console moved, causing the damage to the disk (just like the customer service rep said).

My problem with this is, if the console is designed in such a way as to allow the disk to spin so fast that the console may move, then it is designed with a flaw. That design flaw is Microsoft's responsiblity. For them to say that there is no problem with the consoles defies basic logic.

I just wish they would admit that the console might cause this damage and replace the games for people who are otherwise unable to do so.

The best part of this whole debate is how people pretend that just because MS says "don't move the console or you might scratch the disc" that it's somehow OK, or the users' fault.

I was returning a game and they said it had a ring -- they took it back anyway, but I was confused, as I had never so much as touched the console while it was running, other than to put a disc in or take it out. They told me it was a terrible idea to run the console vertical, and that they saw these rings "all the time" (and I would think a Gamestop employee would have the experience to say so). I've been running it horizontal ever since, but still....

I can turn my laptop in a full 360 degree barrel roll while it's reading a CD and it doesn't scratch the disc. Why should the Xbox be any different?

It's been awhile since someone has posted on here but I do have to clarify one thing. People talk about idiots moving their machine from vertical to horizontal or "why would you move your machine" type comments. Think about this, I'm playing on my tv and I have a wired controller, man, I can't sit on my couch it's not far enough, you move your console more towards you...it scratches, it's happened to me. This is not an "idiotic" thing, everyone has done this with their console, who is going to be like "wait a minute, I need to get closer to my couch/seat, let me turn my system off". It just doesn't make sense. I just took my disc back to wal-mart, told em my xbox messed it up and they gave me another one, it was quite funny actually haha. I didn't feel like messing with Xbox or anything and wanted a quick solution

I have just found this thread because a friend told me his disc got scratched too, and that it was becasue it had it laying down instead of standing up. since he has had it standing up he has had no problems.

However, my problem is i have had the 360 for just over 4 weeks, i took gears of war back once because it was scratched (supposedly) but now i reacon it is because it was laying down. i have not moved my console whilst it was spinning or playing. I just bought Dead or Alive 4 last week, and after playing it for 2 hours, i now cannot complete the game in story mode because the disc is scratched.

Im very upset and im not sure whether i should just bin the game or try and get it replaced. and whether there is anything i can do about my 360. after all it is only just over a month old... so i dont want to be taking it apart and adding rubber buffers to stop it scratching as one site suggested.

Any suggestions? though it sounds like none of you have actually experienced scratching.

Maybe I'm just repeating others.. didn't read some of the posts.

I WAS loving my gaming experience, at least 10 games played really fine, even my GoW copy bought @ release worked fine except for some unreadable disc messages but it didn't bother me much. UNTIL I bought oblivion for budgetprice (40 euro). at first the disc seemed to brake inside the drive and I checked the disc the first 3 times it braked (can't blame me for being concerned). after like 50 hours of playing and hundreds of "brakes" later I got stuck @ some quest (blank screen before the unreadable disc message). took the disc out of the drive and was almost similar scratched as most upper image shows. only my disc got scratched more to the middle and only 1 deep clean circle scratched on the disc.

now my girlfriend moved the console a couple of times while playing some game and it didn't scratch the games at all. upright or horizontal position didn't scratch the discs either. So I think MS is just looking for excuses, for what I don't know. Bad publicity is the last thing they need, seeing the other next-gen consoles have had less customers crieing for help. Maybe it's just a matter of time who knows. All I know is I'm now stuck with a 360 console, lost the receipt. Dealer told me without receipt they charge like 200 euro.

Buying a new 1? I DON'T THINK SO, I'll try my luck on the cheap wii!!!!

If you have an Xbox 360 Console that has scratched your discs and you would like more information about the proposed class action lawsuit filed, please visit the Plaintiff’s attorneys’ website at http://www.Xbox360Litigation.com.

In the lawsuit, the Plaintiff is asking the Court to certify a nationwide class and create a fund for all individuals that have had discs damaged by an Xbox 360. The Plaintiff has alleged that the total minimum amount of damages incurred by all of the individuals combined is at least $5,000,000.00. To be clear, the Plaintiff is not alleging that he or any individual member of the class is entitled to that amount of money. The sum recovered by individual class members will be significantly less than the total damages incurred by the proposed class as a whole.
