BTW, Sony isn't the only console manufacture to treat its console as do-it-all PC like device. Hell, even Nintendo does it to a certain extent (browser, music player etc.), though not as much as either MS or Sony does. I love Nintendo as well, but their spin that the Wii is a pure dedicated gaming console is bull.

Jesus Christ.

What world are you all living in where technology never changes? It would be one thing if they upgraded a central component of the system like the GPU and you couldn't play any future games (or adding rumble function - why isn't anybody upset about this much more legitimate complaint?). But this is the -hard drive-. Did you honestly expect it was never going to change? Do you buy all your computer equipment on the condition that "The price can never drop and the hardware can never change"? Did you walk into the game store 10 years after buying your SNES, see it for $50, and say, "Oh man, I got SCREWED!"

Guess what? The PS3 HD is going to get bigger. Maybe not today, but it will happen. And then it will happen again. And the price will drop. And you can sit on your high chair in the corner screaming about how you NEVER could have seen this coming and how you NEVER would have bought it if you'd only KNOWN that technology changes, or you can shut up and remember how you've been enjoying your PS3 for months longer than these new adopters, which was the privelege you PAID for.

And in the middle of these hysterics, do you need to be reminded again that: a) this is a "possibility being considered" that is months off at the very least, and b) you can upgrade your damn harddrive yourself!

And to the people who don't like the term 'SKU': that's fine, if you have an alternative. Do you know another short term that means "console model with variation on price and features"? Keeping in mind that "bundle" and "package" have different meanings (games and other bonuses included in the box, not changes to the console itself).

SONY EXPLAINED THE DIFFERENCE THEMSELVES.

THEY made it clear they value the PS3 as a do-it-all-in-1 device that also plays videogames. They are putting their Sony movies, Sony music, Sony media on their device. Games aren't that high in their priorities save for the financial gain and installbase. People buy more music and movies than games will ever be sold.

Nintendo is developing a platform that plays videogames they develop for it. You aren't paying $200 extra to make up for 1st-party software support. Wii doesn't rely on its Wii Channels to give it the advantage over other consoles, the way someone might tout "Well because it can do all these things the PS3 is worth $600!".

Ken and Neal,

You guys are notorious Nintendo fanboys. You make nothing but anti-MS and Sony comments. Your insecurity in your Nintendo only gaming choice is very evident in your ridiculous comments. You bitch about memory size changes to systems you hate and will never own. You are sad.

Changing HDD size or adding an output choice doesn't take away from the console you agreed to buy already and already enjoy. The 360 and PS3 "elites" will not play any games that the 20Gb models do not play. The advantages of larger HDD's and 1080p digital output are actually in video download/playback primarily. They have little or nothing to do with gaming. I own a lot of 360 games and have plenty of room on my HDD, with most of my content deletable with 3 minutes spare time.

For the record, I have owned every Nintendo console and love their 1st party games. But there is no way owning a Wii only is a substitute for glorious mindblowing HD gaming goodness like Mass Effect, Gears, MGS4, RE5, GTAIV, etc. The kind of over the top epic big budget critically acclaimed games that the Wii is very short on so far.

But, I guess you two know that deep down and make these ridiculous comments because of your insecurities there. Time to go home and play some Gears Annex mode. Haven't tried it yet. Maybe a little Guitar Hero and/or Wii Sports once the old lady is done with her homework.

Chris Putnam pretty much nails it with comment 101. You will be able to play every PS3 and 360 game ever made with the 20Gb models. You won't be able to download as many movies and always play 1080p movies (360) with the 20Gb models, but Halo3 and MGS4 will run just fine. You PAY for owning electronics before other people, one way or the other. Your PAYBACK is that you get to enjoy it months or even years longer than other people.

God, people are going to really freak when the PS3 drops its price right before Halo3 and MS drops it right after Halo3. Pants will be soiled. Milk will be spilled. Grown men will scream for their mothers.

the newer-model-iPod/Computer paradigm is a negative aspect of computing and it's never affected consoles before until now.

this is the first time mainstream consoles have fluctuating specs (and launch SKUs), so expect lots of growing pains with people reacting to technology changes.

upgrading core technology is all about timing. when you're going to piss the fewest people off should be one of the main considerations but it's too often really not.

if the 60 GB is fine dining, then the 80GB PS3 must be a really expensive, flexible hooker.

I will have to agree. I have an XBOX 360 Pro and it sucks that the elite is coming out, but that is business my friend … now Sony is rumored to be thinking on updating the 60GB to a 80GB? Bad idea? I don’t know if it is .. I personally don’t like it, I think it will hurt Sony, no I’m not a XBOX 360 Fanboy, consumers need Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo to battle it out .. more competition better for customers we get more choice, better prices and better products, can you imagine only Sony or only Microsoft, I love the XBOX 360 it is a nice Game Console and I love its games GOW and GRAW, amazing, I like some things the PS3 is brining (I’ll wait for more games to come out) but c’mon we need the competition, I think Sony will make a mistake if they introduce the 80GB version, XBOX 360s been out for more than a year so well it is logical, besides you need more room, the shift is from a 20GB to a 120 GB .. big difference, plus HDMI it is understanding, but Sony just to increase 20GB, I considered it to be stupid, no wonder why PS3 is doing so bad right now, Sony Executive are sure stupid, or that it seems at least to me, Microsoft is doing a far better job, I think (I hate Microsoft but love XBOX 360) I laugh at MS and its stupid Zune (Apple is much better), but competition make products better so Microsoft keep it up with the XBOX and specially Xbox Live, Sony .. think on what you are doing, PS3 has been handle incorrectly, now cheers to Nintendo, maybe Sony should hire some Nintendo brain.. my cheers to Nintendo (but I don’t think it is going to last as graphics get older .. graphics and capacity is crucial, I wish Nintendo keeps up the good work .. it is good for all of us .. so please stop fighting Sony Fan Boys and XBOX Fan boys ,,, it just sucks, both of you guys will be worst if someone “won” the console wars, if not look at Windows XP, Vista and those other shittis OS, no innovation, Apple MAC OS, pure shit, we need a revolution in OS.

Just my two cents on that matter, so please keep competition up and running, we (the consumers) are the ones that get the preps,

Jake: for the record, neither the PS3 nor the Xbox 360 upon its launch were/are swimming in these epic, over the top, big budget games you speak of. i remember the 360 actually being swamped with hi-res ports of ps2 and xbox games initially, and the ps3 has resistance a port of oblivion and...that's about it.

Ha ha ha... Ken is seriously crazy.

This does not equal the travesty that is the 360 Elite
1) Not getting charged MORE for it (like with the 360)
2) Anybody can buy their own hard drive of any capacity at any time (unlike with the 360)
3) it's only 20GB... just enough to be an upgrade, but not enough that people with 60s will really feel slighted at all. (unlike the 100 Gb jump wit the Elite).

Getting mad at Sony for this would be like getting mad at them for dropping the price: insanity. It seems Sony will just quietly upgrade the hard drive every year or so by 20GB. Seems like a nice gradual way to keep the pace to me.

(And people will get all pissed when they do drop the price. If you are one of them, go check in to the nearest loony bin.)

There. We're done now.

This is typical Sony. Alienate anyone who bought the $500 version. Get everyone to buy the $600 version. Now offer a slightly more expensive version with MORE bells & whistles to further alienate those who bought the expensive $600 version. Damn... those Sony execs must be some greedy bastards.

LOL
A: They didn't alienate the people who bought the $500 version at all. It sucks that they're not selling the more affordable SKU, but at least its fully upgradable. You can add an 802.11b/g ethernet bridge to give it the wifi functionality, you can plug in a USB flash media reader for that functionality, and you can replace the 20GB disk with any 2.5" SATA drive you want, of any size, even much larger than 60GB (160GB is the largest readily available now, but 250GB 2.5" drives are just coming out). Compare this the the X360 elite, which actually adds some functionality that you can't just add on: the HDMI jack, which might be necessary for future HD media for copy protection.

B: There is no indication that this new version that Sony is "thinking" about will be more expensive than $599.99.

C: There is no indication that this potential new SKU will have any features that you wouldnt be able to upgrade to from the present 60GB SKU. In other words, theres no reason to believe that anyone will be screwed.

Why are all you people still thinking Sony is losing money? They just announced a expected profit rise of at least 500million instead of a lose with most of it coming from the game division. That says it has to be making a profit off of the hardware. Because ps2 sales are up but no 2000% up and they didnt sell enough games to make that profit so guess where that leaves us with? The console does not take that much to make, that was JUST HYPE and you fools fell for it! Line hook and sinker! $2000 then $600 SUCKERS LOLOLOLOL!!!!!

Add me as another PS3 owner that isn't pissed that Sony might offer an 80GB version. It's not like this is the first time I ever bought a piece of electronics gear, and something that costs less or had more features was available in the near future. I'm happy to give up the 20GB in order to have the PS3 sooner.

Think about this for a moment, if the new and the current ps3 r gonna have a wifi, bluray disk,sd reader hdd, six-axis controller, full 1080p and etc. there's no way that the new ps3 will b 600 dollars thers no way, bcause they will lose money both wayz. People r gonna buy the ps3 no matter what just bcause of the name and publisher name sony. Come on if it has a 500+ dollar bluray, 100 wifi, 100+ dollar hddrive, sd reaeder 20+, a 30+ controller, 1,000,000 dollar+ name (sony and playstation 3) theres no freakn way. dont 4 get were not the only ones that get the ps3, in some areas the ps3 outsells both systems 3:1, so dont hold ur breath.
