Joystiq interview: Nolan K. Bushnell -- Atari founder and restauranteur
35
We caught up with Nolan Bushnell at the "I Am 8-Bit" party, and asked him a few questions. Since he founded two of our favorite things, Atari and Chuck E. Cheese, it's hard not to be impressed with the guy. Plus, since he's not in the game business anymore, he can be snarky and honest about the current console wars. Also ... he sort of looks like a pirate.
Check out the interview after the jump where he comments on the success of the Wii, calling the PlayStation a mistake, and some of the details on his new gaming restaurant venture.
So, you said back in 2005 that the 3D controller Nintendo was working on, which turned out to be the Wiimote, was a good idea. Now that it's been out for awhile and is enjoying popularity, what do you think about it?
"I think it definitely fulfilled expectations. A lot of people had opted out of the video game industry because controls for games had become so complex. The Wii has brought a lot of those people back into the equation."
Were you able to pick one up? They've been hard to find.
"Somehow, I don't seem to have a problem getting these things, I don't know why that is. (laughs) I do have a Wii and it's been fun playing around with it."
Speaking of next-generation consoles, what do you think about the current three-way race between the majors?
"Well, it seems like the Xbox 360 has the clear advantage in terms of games and the online service. It's a software race at this point, the hardware is just secondary. I play the Xbox 360 more than the other systems, although I don't have a PlayStation 3 yet. I'm not sure if I will get one, because there isn't really a compelling reason to own one just yet."
You sort of famously said that the PlayStation was a mistake, and that the PlayStation 3 will ultimately fail. What did you mean by that?
"The PlayStation just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It wasn't that they had put together an incredible product, they just filled a void that the market had at the time. Consumers wanted a new gaming system, and Sony was there. There weren't really any other choices as far as the technology available, at the time.
With the PlayStation 3, some of my engineer friends have looked at it and said that it is very difficult to program for. Engineers like to do things that are hard, but they need a good set of tools to do that with. That's keeping a lot of good things from the PlayStation 3, because engineers and developers are shying away from it."
Your restaurant uWink, aimed at women and gamers, opened recently. How has the response been? What makes it particularly appealing to women?
It's been really great. We have touch screens at every table, and it lends itself towards group gaming, not just an individual experience. We don't want to make the gaming a focused experience with just one person playing at a time, and that makes it more accessible to non-gamers, including females who haven't played games before. Plus we have great food and drinks. Stop by and check it out!
Oh, we will. We will. Look for a report on Joystiq soon. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Pirates wear patches for night vision.
And yes we have heard the argument that PSX and PS2 were hard to program. The difference being those had head starts and a momentous surge in install base. With so many games developed for it since it had the largest install base negated the difficulty and cost in coding for it. The situation is different this generation cycle. It's coming late to the party with 360 having the head start and MS pumping money to developers. An even more difficult to program hardware with 8 processing cores and disc medium higher than even some FMV rich RPGs. The Wii is easier to program for since it has the same architecture as the GCN and the development tools are significantly cheaper. With the pressure to pump games at 1080p 60fps requiring substantially more artwork and coding, on a hard to code machine with complex mechanisms, most developers having not pushed the PS2 having an even harder adjustment, combined with the lack of available tools at the outset gives far more importance this generation that the PS3 is hard to program for will definitely hurt it.

Wait, didn't Atari beat ITSELF out of the video game console market, only to have Nintendo pick up the broken shards of the market? You know that your company is incompetent when your company is it's own worst enemy.

The hardware is 2nd to software. You heard it from the Pirate King himself. The Wii really does have a great chance this generation to prove a major success. All they need is more 3rd party support which gets announced more and more every day, and the inevitable online Virtual Console play in 2008. I bought it because I knew it would bring back that arcade experience which had evaporated where I live.
I will get a 360 or a PS3 when I have a 40"+ HD screen but untill then the Wii is great on my SD 32".

Nolan Bushnell didn't work at Atari anymore when Atari destroyed itself and the whole industry.

No, let's ask John Romero! LOL.
Anyway, who cares? Nintendo also came in the right time when everything was an atari clone and gaming was almost dead. They came with a fresh product, and so did Sony.
Seriously, attributing sony's success only to "timing" makes you sound like a moron. I don't know where you guys are getting the "PSX was hard to program for", PS2 was, but PSX wasn't. One of the main reasons Sega Saturn didn't get the amount of exclusives PSX had was development ease, assembler versus C++ for saturn and PSX respectively.
The reason PSX was so successful was not simply timing, but the fact that its games were a lot cheaper than before, while at the same time, delivering a ton of content, with excellent CGI and music quality. Its controller didn't deviate much fron the SNES one which most had, and is today's 360 controller much different than the first dual-shock?
Calling it "just timing" is stupid. Maybe PS2 was a little more reliant on timing, but then again, Sega and Nintendo could have released a DVD based console before or in time to compete, and did they? Hell no, and it's understandable since there was nothing to gain from it. For Sony, there was. But the dreamcast could have been backwards compatible... yet it wasn't. So, the PS2 was a success because of timing, a free DVD player, and backwards compatibility with a very successful console, something never done in the modern era of games. The Xbox had a DVD player, but by then everyone that wanted a cheap DVD player already had one. But it wasn't simply lack of timing, it was lack of Japanese games, and an excess of the same genres that stopped it from beating PS2. That's hardly luck.
I detect a little bit of jealousy in bushnell's words. After all, Atari was simply moderately successful in the modern era of videogames... oh wait.

@Ed, Bushnell sold Atari to Warner in 1976 and they got rid of him in 1978. The industry crashed in 1983.

Nolan Bushnell is the video game industries version of Ron Jeremy. He used to be cool (when we didn't know he profited off the blood sweat and tears of the Jewish immigrant that invented pong) but now he's old fat and washed up. Why bother interviewing this old moron?

The argument of playstation is hard to program for applies much more for PS3 than it did for PS2. PS2 had certain advantages and created an install base large enough to negate any difficulties to program for it. The PS3 is the hardest to program for and has high specs being pressured onto them unlike the PS2 era and it's uncertain if or when they can reach enough gamers.

I've been to uWink a few times, moving to Georgia in a week or so though sadly, hoping to go one last time before I do, it's fairly neat. My friend actually got sort of a coupon from a manager or something. (Really it was just a card that said buy two meals get two free signed by them.) Watched the Academy Awards there. Hope they keep updating the software, oh yes.

Funny, when PS1 came out I distnctly remember another System by Sega being released..... What was it? It outsold the PS1 by 2 to 1 initially in Japan... oh, I can't remember... seems like Nolan forgot too.
And PS2... I think the same Sega had a machine out a good YEAR before PS2 hit and had a steaming head start with software and looked like a sure fire hit! (Much like Xbox 360 now)... I can't remember that console either, gads it was so long ago now...
I also seem to think a certain Ralph who's-ya-calls-him inventing a certain Magna game-thingy-ma-jiggy in '72 that was blatanly ripped off by said Pirate and made a ton off of.. .what was it?.. "A" Something... Damn, I forget easily. But he sold it off for shit loads and fucked the games industry up the arse, then opened Chuck E Cheese.
Cheers Nolan!
Thank god Nintendo came along.
