PS3 20GB on its way out in Japan too?

Previously Sony told Famitsu, "We're currently not considering changes akin to North America. However we would like to react flexibly with the market." They also told CVG, "We'll continue to monitor demand for the 20GB model ... which will be factored into any future Euro launch plans." A future launch of the 20GB in Europe seems even less likely following reports Sony is "considering" a 80GB PS3 model, which they said in March there were no plans for. Sony would probably like to drop the 60GB price in the relative future, because if people complain about the $600 price tag of the 60GB model -- imagine the sticker shock of an 80GB model! That means clearing space and minds of the 20GB model, which if it were still on the market would probably drop in price relative to the 60GB model and be an overly attractive price for a Blu-ray player.
The picture above is from one store in Japan which crossed out the 20GB model from their storefront sign, other reports are starting to come in that the 20GB model is saying sayonara in stores. Joystiq spoke with Miller Stevens, a San Francisco native spending some time in Japan, who says, "I headed to some electronics stores in the Shinjuku district. Bic Camera, major store, has 20GB in stock and, when asked, said they were available as far as they knew. Another big store, Yodobashi, did not have them in stock and weren't getting any and weren't clear why. A couple of smaller stores didn't have them, but weren't clear whether it was because there was no supply or they just weren't ordering them." We wait for confirmation that the 20GB PS3 is official dead -- everywhere this time. Maybe Sony is just waiting to call the 20GB's time of death at the same moment they announce the 80GB's life?
[Special thanks to Miller Stevens]

That's because it sucks. Just like Sony. And M$.
The only next-gen console is the one that changes gaming. High def graphics really dont. Plus the dual analogue has broken every FPS ever designed for it,
hvnlysoldr @ Apr 18th 2007 10:39AM
Walrus picture please. Pretty please?
What Happened to Sony @ Apr 18th 2007 10:52AM
Oh well, who cares. The 20GB model is gone.
I don't own a PS3 anyway and i wasn't going to buy this model. I won't be buying a PS3 until they lower that sh*t.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 18th 2007 10:56AM
@cunt
I agree dual analogue for FPS is jacked up, but it gets the job done.
More power & high def graphics change gaming. Your a complete dumbass if can't see that. More enemies on screen, more atmosphere, smarter AI, more realistic enviroments. I would take that over the Wiimote any day.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 18th 2007 10:59AM
Also the sixaxis already has good enough motion controls. So I got the best of both worlds. Blu-ray, power, sixaxis.
hegemonyhog @ Apr 18th 2007 11:01AM
A year and a half into this generation, and we've seen two effective price *hikes*.
Jake @ Apr 18th 2007 11:03AM
I don't think the Wii is really changing gaming. It is adding another way to game, but it really isn't changing the way I already gamed and continue to game. It is just offering an alternative for people who are more casual and not good enough at games to enjoy the more difficult ones.

What a load of BS. Seriously. You're only next-gen if you "change" gaming? WTF? How do you define "change" anyway?

You're famous, buddy. I've seen so many variations on your name, it's not even funny.
My guess is ... 20gb gets nixed. 60gb drops to 550 (cause 100 would make it lose more money than the 20gb was), and the 80gb will ... if we're lucky, sneak in at 600. Any higher who be stupid, no?
Saneless @ Apr 18th 2007 11:20AM
Heh, price hike. Sony, you rule!
It's just going to be great watching this.

@Dolla Dolla
lol! I know, its crazy.
I wonder if Sony would drop the price this soon. They might wait to see how well MGS & FF sell.

If they are smart that's what will happen. But it's Sony so you never know. I don't know what the sales of the 20 GB were like, so I really can't say if dropping it was a good idea, but I really don't get the point of the 80 GB model. Just seems pointless unless they are also phasing out the 60 GB model because their supplier isn't going to produce 60 GB drives anymore. 60 GB seems like plenty to start with and users can upgrade anytime they want. Seems like they could just slap the PS3 brand on SATA laptop drives and sell them as official upgrades.

This can be done on any platform. The key is having talented developers and tons of money. If what you said was true, we would not have any crappy games. But they still come out year after year after year....
Guess you are in the "George Lucas" of cinema too. ;D
LongshotX @ Apr 18th 2007 11:26AM
Who gives a fuck. The big question is when is Microsoft going to drop the price?
Dolla Dolla @ Apr 18th 2007 11:28AM
@Jack
They can't wait for FF and MGS. Those games probably won't get released until 08. I think we'll see a price drop before christmas. I think we NEED to see a price drop before christmas. The february sales in NA for the PS3 were disappointing, to say the least. And if Motorstorm doesn't get the PS3 up to 200,000 for March, well ...
@Vidikron
I don't get the 80gb version, either. Why not slap in a 120 just to one-up Microsoft, cause that's all the 80gb seems to be in response to simply due to the timing of this and the Elite announcement. I swear, Sony PR needs an overhaul. That's where company cuts should start, not the worker force.
Vidikron @ Apr 18th 2007 11:30AM
@14
I agree with Jake's assessment on that. I think MS is trying to hold out for Halo 3 before dropping the price. H3 is going to move a lot of systems, so they likely want to try and cash in on that. They I wouldn't be surprised to see a price drop and maybe a "Halo 3 Edition" 360 appear with H3 packed in sometime after the new year.
JodyAnthony @ Apr 18th 2007 11:32AM
no way yous guys, my bundle of plastic and wires is way better than your bundle of plastic and wires.
Anonymous @ Apr 18th 2007 11:43AM
This is a dumb move on Sony's part. Alot of people can't afford 600 dollars (in the US) and the equivalent of 1000 dollars (In Europe and elsewhere) for their console. Taking away the cheaper option is the same as shooting themselves in the foot.
Oh and the Wii sucks ASS. Gigantic donkey ass

So you think a game like Crysis could ran on a 700mh computer with 64 ram as long as the programs took their time.
You need the power to make the programming work.
Jake @ Apr 18th 2007 11:53AM
Thanks for the name drop Vid. lol.
I seriously don't see any point in having a 60 and 80 Gb PS3. They are too close to the same. I could see 120+ Gb. I could actually see a core system where you put your own damn drive in it. But not a 60 and 80. I personally don't think we'll ever see a 60 and 80 sitting next to eachother and this is all just a rumor/misunderstanding.
Phranctoast @ Apr 18th 2007 12:05PM
I dont know if MS would ever package Halo 3 with the 360. It is a "Mature" rated game.
Digi Smalls @ Apr 18th 2007 12:08PM
Sony would up the current 60gb to 80gb for two reasons.
1. they got a deal on new 80gb drives
2. they can't have their competition's "best" model have a number associated with it (120) that's twice their "best" model.
it's all about perception and price. early adopters are the first to fight (cannon fodder) in this war.

Also in the news, demand affects supply. More at 11.
Jack of No Trades @ Apr 18th 2007 12:12PM
There is no way Sony can put a 120 HD in the PS3 without a price increase. I see no HD upgrade for awhile unless they start getting deals for buying the 80 HD in bulk.

also: sony knows that as soon as they drop the price, both ms and nintendo will too. they'd rather that ms and nintendo keep their prices right where they are. seriously... when wii is at $150 and mario galaxy/mp:3 are out, only the hardest core of hard core anti-fanboys will be able to resist.
...and even some of them won't.
but they'll lie about it.

don't get all defensive jack of no trades. i'm just saying that with those two, as well as brawl available, as well as 100 or 200 other games from third parties and a price point of $150... how could anyone resist that?
i'm sure there won't be one single game aside from brawl that will interest you in the next two years though. not even slightly. there definately won't be 3 or 4 exclusive games of interest that might merit a $150 purchase either, right?
simply put, when wii hits $150, this generation is over, and HD loses. now, *NEXT* generation is a different story...

I can?
Sorry, I know Nintendo is a great company and all, but this time they screwed up, I hate both the DS and Wii, they think that the consumer is stupid or something and that my adding something new to the table and not improving they will make money....oh wait...that is actually working...
Screw the Wii's sensing controller, best game is FE, and hell, it doesn't even need the stupid motion sensing.
btw, at a price point of 150, you would practically be comparing the DS to the Wii, so yah, a handheld? or a console that is almost the same price?
"Don't get me started on the more juicier games comming to 360/PS3 that crush Mario & Metriod quality wise."
nowadays, anything on the 360 or PS3 would crush the Wii on the graphics department...

This is not
that gamers do not want the 20GB models. Stores do not want to sell them now because they cannot make as much money by selling them as selling 60GB models.
Sony lies that they stops 20GB models because no one wants them. The truth is, Sony stops 20GB ones because they want to make more money (or loss less money) by selling 60GB ones instead of 20GB ones. Sony forces the stores not to sell 20GB ones by giving store almost no margin on the 20GB ones. The stores are forced by Sony not to sell 20GB ones because they cannot make money from selling them.
Rubang B @ Apr 18th 2007 7:19PM
Sony priced themselves out of this console war, but they are too scared to drop the price. They think dropping the price too soon will be admitting failure. The way they see it, they lose either way. Playing catch up with MS in their hard drive size arms race is just increasing the price gap between everybody and the Wii. Each time they release a more expensive model, Wii sales will increase.
NPD numbers for March come out tomorrow. Yay!
Aberu @ Apr 18th 2007 8:15PM
I really don't think they will release an 80 gb model. I think the statement was made more in a comparative light than in a literal one. I really doubt they would release it as 80 gb for a higher price. Maybe they will keep the price the same, release a new version that has 80 gb near the christmas season, and around that same time have dvd upscaling as a feature. Hopefully they add that one in soon. Can't have the 360 getting ahead again. Btw on my 21st day of my PS3 being on constantly doing Folding@Home. 62 work units done. Within that time I left it on to play some games and such as well. I'm still keeping it on to the 30 day mark to see if it survives. If it does. That means it's more consistent than any media device, pc, anything I have ever used IMO.
Despite all the arguments for getting a console that arises all these topics over and over again, one thing remains. Can YOUR supposedly superior system help cure cancer, and be left on 21 days in a row?... and counting...
Aberu @ Apr 18th 2007 8:23PM

They are shooting themself in the foot by taking away the proclaimed 10:1 ratio seller? It's the 1 in that equation btw in case you haven't heard yet. The only thing they are shooting themselves in the foot over is their stupid pricing of the Euro model. It doesn't have the emotion engine from the PS2 and yet they charge 400 bucks more? It sounded like a ploy to make back the profits they lose on every system in American sales.
Only thing I've really noticed is no system in this next generation race is selling near as fast as let's see:
The PS2
The PSX
The SNES
The NES
The Atari
It seems that people in general, outside of the hardcore, the little children that have rich parents, and grandpas that read newspaper articles about the wiis, have no interest in these systems at launch in comparison to systems before them. Maybe it's the obvious up-marking of the Wii's hardware and low production? Maybe it's the over-hyped media capabilities of both the 360 and the PS3 (remote play is fucking sick and underrated IMO).
Many magazines are publishing articles on the computer gaming era coming into play. It seems with dwindling first year sales of consoles this generation, that might be a reality. More people have had computers equipped with game software than any console since playstation has been around.
Todd @ Apr 19th 2007 12:22PM
No surprise. Sony enjoys abandoning their less than stellar products.
