If the thought of waiting for the 120GB, HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 Elite to arrive in stores proves unbearable to you, consider how quickly time flies when you're spending money. Cast your view on this third SKU, now available on eBay, seemingly thanks to Target's inability to honor the April 29th street date. The eBay seller (and possible Subaru Impreza driver) has kicked off the bid at an amusing $600 and promises to ship the black box "IMMEDIATELY." IMMEDIATELY after the auction ends next week on 23 April, that is.
Even if bidding remains lethargic, you'll be paying at least $100 extra to receive the Xbox 360 Meh-lite less than a week before launch. Sounds like a dubious deal on top of another dubious deal. Best try your luck at a local Target if you're the supremely impatient type.

In my 6 months or so of using Joystiq, I've found threads about the "Elite" contain the most overblown crazy brainless fanboy comments ever. Here we go again, I guess.
I'll try one. Damn, MS just made my premium useless and bent me over for another $480. I can't even enjoy playing Gears on my 50" HDTV knowing there is a bigger, blacker xbox in somebody's house that has 1080p cables for the 720p games. I'm uber-bummed.
Xbots like me just got pwned. HDD space for downloadable video content and digital cables is such a fun game. Owning a 360 and playing the hell out of it for 16 months just got totally negated. I'd give it all back just to pay $80 more now for 1080p output for 720p games and HDD space for videos I won't download.

Honestly, I got my Core 360 for $100 and I'm good. Now all I need is a Wii with a non-GameCube-port title...

Konny,
I know sarcasm on the internet is hard to read, but I basically said I was going to make an overblown crazy fanboy comment immediately before making it. Come on bud, cut me some slack. I got nothing but love for my wii60. At least Vid knows not to take anything I say seriously by now.
jason,
Still complaining about 360 drive noise. Well, whatever you have to do to convince yourself you made the right choice by staying away from the system. Trust me, you get into an online Gears match in HD w/ surround sound and even the thought of drive noise will never enter your mind. You can't hear it when you are playing a game, plain and simple.

What is so hard about understanding a product can not be sold until such and such a date.

@ Jake
You don't even need the sound of your television to drive away the sound of the disc drive. The sheer involvement of Gears online pulls you into the game past the point of hearing your 360.

I've never noticed the drive noise while playing a game or watching a movie. The only time I hear it is when I'm putting in a disc and are literally right next to it.

I gotta agree with the others. I never "hear" my 360's disc drive while I am playing a game. For the most part, the only way I could see it being nagging is if you sit right next to your 360 while you play it in a small room.

It's funny, I (and probably over 90% of gamers) have no use for HDMI. It's nice they're offering different colors, but I hardly want to pay more money for a paint job. Is there any other reason, other than the hard drive, which purchased separately is by far the biggest ripoff in gaming history, to buy this? Are people really filling their 20Gb? Why are they still MAKING 20Gb hard drives, it seems like more trouble that it's worth, you can hardly go into a store and buy one that small.
It's nice that the 360 is getting games now but Microsoft's approach to all this is quite silly.

My 20GB drive is nearly filled, and I only use it for demos, arcade, and game saves. I don't even have any space for music!

I still say this whole update is unmerited, just release the 120 GB HDD, and that's all that would be necessary
HDMI is still very much ahead of its time. If HDTV's are only 15% of the market, only 15% of THAT is HDMI equipped, or less
Of course, the idea behind it is to create hype more than to provide something for the existing fanbase (who can just get the 120 GB HDD seperately), but i don't see how raising the price would help them in the end. The extra $80 isn't going to sway people who were on the fence, that's for sure...

As long as mine continues to work, I'm happy with it. My TV only has one HDMI input anyway and I'll be damned if I'm buying a switcher half the price of a 360...

Well, I have to be honest and say that the 360's drive/fan noise DOES bother me at times. Usually when I'm at the dash or playing or at a quiet point in a game. It's not a big deal because you really don't notice it during the heat of battle playing GoW or R6LV. But I can see how some people might be annoyed while playing Uno or something.
I think what Jason said has merit. I have thought about buying as Elite. Not for the extra drive space, but because I like the black color and I want a quieter system. But I'm going to wait until the 60nm chips are in use before seriously considering making such a switch.

I live in a small Brooklyn apt, and my neighbors are very sensitive to noise at night (dicks). If I have to keep my TV at a reasonable volume, is drive noise going to be noticeable? Or should I just keep waiting for the 65nm chips?

I believe the 360 does not use the fan when you are at the dash or playing an XBLA game. If you notice when you boot up a game disc it comes on...but then turns off when you exit back to the dash.

how the hell does this keep happening, I work in retail in the UK and when this happens the publishers make an example of it to stop it happening the last game i can remember breaking its street date was pro evo 6 (pro evo 2007 in the US) the company resposible was fined for doing it. we have a distibution company called Gem that sends out most of the microsoft stuff and the GTA games aswell as others and when gears of war launched they told everyone if they broke on gears then they would not be reciving stock of GTA IV for launch

The (major) noise is not a product of the chips, or the fans; it is the disk drive. If you think it's the fans, do a simple test: download a demo of a game you own, and play the demo. There will be no noticeable noise difference between the 360 in the dashboard and the 360 while playing the demo. However, when playing the game from the DVD, you will hear the drive spinning. It is the loudest system I have ever owned in this respect (and I own pretty much every major system to be released over the past 12 years). I am not saying I dislike my 360 because I love everything about it. But its crappy DVD disk drive is loud; there is just no way around it. There are apparently many different drives out in the 360's (depending on manufacture date?), and I can't comment on the sound level of the other DVD drives out, but I know mine is loud. I may have been stuck with the loud drive though, which, if the case, stinks...
I do hope they make the 360's with the quieter DVD drives. I really don't care about the whole 65 nm chip thing because I don't really have too many problems with heat in my 360. But I would love a new DVD drive so I could at least try to enjoy my 360 in quiet sometimes.

@25, if you're not going anywhere soon, just wait another 6 months or so for the 65nm, which is going to run cooler and use up less electrick. Besides the 65nm process might eliminate the RROD.
RROD!?..
RROD=Red Ring Of Death/ Red Ring Of Doom
Hmmmm...

Mark, you are right...it is the DVD drive that makes the 360 loud. I guess you missed the news that new 360s have a new BenQ drive which is much, much quieter than the older 360s. I have not heard it myself, but the news about this drive hit a few months ago.

Ya'll kill me complaining about noise.... what an excuse. Might be a sony zombie spewing junk about something that is so meaningless while playing a game. I cant even think of hearing it while pllaying. and as far as the elite goes, I'll end up upgrading... Not now but later. My 360 is doing the job just fine tank you... Just give me more games and I'm a happy camper!
